Same here, I will pay cash or write a check whenever I can before using my Credit Card, and now that I'm getting some decent hours once again, that will change!

With using the credit card I receive "airline miles" which gets me away every year. However there are a few "cash only" places and I'm sure they can "fudge" their books somewhat when it comes to paying taxes.

Why would you guys carry around a pocketful of cash when you can pay for everything with a debit card?

Not a credit card, a debit card. Works just like a credit card as far as convenience (swipe and go), but the money comes out of your checking account. So it's like paying with cash without the hassle of carrying around cash! Seriously... why would anyone still walk around with a wad of cash in their pockets?

I agree Harry except for one thing, bank fees. When I pay with cash, the merchant has no fee. When I pay with a debit card, there is a fee that the bank charges the merchant, but it is less than if you use a credit card, which has the highest fees. My local merchants that I like, get cash, the ones that are just a place I do business get the debit card. The gas companies and other high end stooges get the credit card. It makes no difference to my bank account but if I can "stick it to the man" even just a little bit, it makes me smile just a bit.

Exactly how is it a hassle to carry cash?? That makes no sense at all. The people I've observed using a debit card have to swipe the card, enter their pin number, wait for the machine to verify that they have enough money in their account and then wait for the machine to print out a receipt. Some even have to sign the receipt. Doesn't seem like it works like cash to me.

Who actually pays cash for anything these days?

I agree with you Harry. I use the debit card for most purchases. I also have credit cards but pay the balances off every month. I don't carry any debt other than my mortgage. I like rewards. If I use my Lowes or Home Depot card, I get 5% back. The minute I get the bill, I schedule the payment on my on-line banking so they earn no interest from me. When I did my major renovations, I took advantage of the same store's no interest for 24 months deal, again I set up my on-line banking to pay it every month so it would be paid ahead of time. Might as well use their money. My credit card rewards just sent me a $50 restaurant gift card that we enjoyed.

I do pay cash for some things... like college education for my two daughters. And cars. I refuse to buy new and have car loans.

And I don't run balances on cards. Simply put, I don't buy things I cannot afford.

Cash is king........... sometimes. I use a debit card most always but around here some gun shops charge a fee using a debit card just as they would a credit card. I think it's 3 %. Better to have that 3 % in my pocket than theirs.

You don't sign if you use a debit card, you only sign if it's a credit card. Your debit card PIN is your "signature." And the verification is instantaneous. The time it takes to swipe the card, punch in a 4 digit PIN and hit "enter" is faster than handing the person cash, and waiting for them to count it up, put it in the correct slots in the cash register, and count out my change. Plus I never have to worry about being a few bucks short, and never have to go to the ATM to get cash.

Believe it or not, there are still some merchants that only take cash..there are a couple restaurants that I go to once a month or so that are cash only. The food trucks around here now are taking cards, I've noticed though (using Square)... And I pay my yard service in cash. But I agree on the debit card--I use that for most purchases. I try and avoid checks also--only write one per month to the pool service, every other bill I pay online.

I do like to carry a bit of cash for dining out at some places, though--easier to tip the parking valet in cash.

Cash vs. Credit. It's like pages 21-23 all over again.

Yes..such is how it is on the internet...stuff keeps repeating over and over again. What's old is new again. Ad infinitum...kind of like the model car biz w/ reissues.. :)

Just like a Möbius Strip.

How much cash for that Mobius strip?

Is that strip or stripe?

Striped or stripped?

Cast or casted?

Tomato or tahmahtoe?

Let's call the whole thing off.

Wrong. I have to sign at some places even with a debit card if over a certain amount.

Whats cash?

There is a time and place for cash, for everything else, Visa Check Card , its everywhere I want to be.

For a serious reply, I rarely carry cash, for the simple reason is I most of the times, I wont need it, and we I do need it, I will make sure I have some. Some people like to carry cash, some people dont, both are neither wrong nor right , but I am going to stick with not carrying cash , I like to live in the present day.

And cheques, , I opened my Credit Union account in 2009 I think, I am on still on the first book of cheques from the first free box I was given, I think maybe I have used half of them , the last time I wrote a cheque was to pay the club dues.

Not where I live. I use my debit card every day, for everything. Never have to sign. Maybe it depends on the place where you use it?

Even so, if you have to sign... big deal. What's the problem?

Just curious, but why do you spell "check" C-H-E-Q-U-E?

To see if anyone would catch it

But if you want to get technical, its still spelled correctly, but not for "American English" , we are the only country that spells it "check"

Signing the back of the card is the best way to provide a forger (amateur or pro) with an exemplar of your signature. That's all they need; they'll take it from there.

I've never signed the back of a card. Rarely encounter any difficulty due to it. B)

And since I'm an American, a U.S. citizen, I write checks (but only occasionally). ^_^
