LennyB Posted March 28 Posted March 28 This is sort of a three day irk. Been having issues with our phones and internet in the office for about ten days now. Internet and phones would go out at random, not all at the same time but at different times. Internet speeds were down to a crawl and we would constantly be kicked off our cloud system. On the phones people could hear us and we couldn't hear them, no phone at all on individual lines and the like. Called Optimum and they said there were issues in our area that they were working on and it should be fixed in a couple of days. If we still had problems on Thursday last to call them back. Called them last Friday morning and made an appointment for this past Monday morning. Optimum tech came out on Monday and after spending two hours blamed it on the wire coming into the building. Said someone buried it. Wire was run by them along the base of the foundation and some mulch was covering it. I would hardly consider that buried. He replaced the wire and said all was good. Not so, afterwords phones were even worse and internet was still slow and randomly non-existent. Same tech came out Tuesday morning. Another couple of hours and he replaced our internet modem and consolidated our phone modems saying we didn't need them all. We had four in total, one internet and three phone, he eliminated one of the phone modems. After he left we discovered he mixed up some of our phone lines. Turned a fax line into a voice line and vice-versa. Easy fix as I just had to plug the proper line into the correct port on their modem. Internet worked for two hours. Wednesday morning we come in and no internet whatsoever and phones were acting wonky, two lines would light up simultaneously but there was only one call coming in. Called Optimum back and they said they would send someone out within half an hour. I waited around an hour and a half and no tech. I had to leave the office for a while so I hoped for the best while I was gone. Returned about two hours later and a different tech was there. We still had no internet and he was blaming our equipment. Said it was either our firewall/router or network switch. Well if that was the case I told him we should have internet if we plugged his modem directly into a computer. He agreed, we tried it and still no internet. So he replaced the internet modem again. Another hour passed, mostly with him on the phone with Optimum and he was still blaming out equipment. Had another modem I told him we can try, he simply said that won't work and he turned and walked out the door to his truck. Next thing I knew he was gone and now all of a sudden not only did we not have internet, we no longer had a network. He bailed because he screwed things up even worse. Yesterday morning I dug into the mess myself. Found their wire that connects their modem to our router was flaky. Not hard to figure out as the light on the modem kept going off. Replaced the wire and after that did a hard reboot of their modem and we had internet back. So apparently with all their mucking about either they did not see the faulty wire or they created the problem. So far internet has been running fine but we did have one phone call where we couldn't hear the party on the line. Time will tell if things are fixed. Sorry for being so long winded but i just needed to get that off my chest. 2
peteski Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Another fine example of incompetence seen everywhere these days. Lack of troubleshooting skills, and lack of pride and responsibility in performing tasks which are part of their job. When a tech comes out to fix a problem, they should own it from the start to successful completion of the job. If their shift ends, they should get another tech engaged. Especially if the customer is a business which depends on the service. But in today's world nobody seems to give the rat's you-know-what. And in the end, after all those "professional techs" didn't find the problem, the customer (you) actually figured it out. 5

TonyK Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Turned on my tv this afternoon and I have no NHL channel. Called Comcast (actually my wife did) and spent time going through the umpteen questions from the automated system. Finally they will call us back which they did and got to talk to a live person. Again, my wife is doing this because I have a hard time understanding broken English. Nothing against the person on the phone but I just have a hard time with it. Spent an hour answering stupid questions such as what kind of tv we have and where is it at, etc. oh heaven's to Betsy!?! Asked if we used the voice command on the remote or clicked the numbers. Are you kidding?! Kept doing things but nothing ever got my channel working. Finally ended the call with them saying they will continue to do things that may take up to 2 hours. Well, was hoping to watch a hockey game in 1 hour and I highly doubt it will be fixed. I'm wondering if there's a problem on the NHL network end but apparently Comcast doesn't have this information.

They are also intentionally interfering with streaming of some sites, throttling users when they claim otherwise, and there's a mega-mega-dollar lawsuit cooking as the proof is well established and documented at this point. It's kinda funny how the "big tech" players seem to think they can get away with anything because they believe they're all SO much smarter than what they see as the uneducated plebes who use their services. They're about to get some reality checks. Edited March 29 by Ace-Garageguy 2

slusher Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Went to my dermatologist today had a rash break out on my collarbone and above my chest twice. She said it looked like an allergic reaction but nothing has changed. She takes a biopsy puts a little round band aid on it I never saw it. I went home laid down and I wake up wet I think it’s sweat I have a red and black shirt on it’s blood. My shirt towel on my pillow and it’s all over me. I pull my shirt off and it looks like I was shot wit a .38 I have no idea why she didn’t burn it wit that machine. I was kinda freaked out. If it doesn’t stop I will have to go back Monday to get it stoped. I have bleed stop on it now.. 4
Falcon Ranchero Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I am mad at myself today. Broke my dad’s grandfather’s 1968 Ingram Renown pocket watch; about 10 seconds before I would’ve fixed it. Popped the back open to look inside, and then stupid me decided to unscrew the four little screws holding the inside plate in, and then take that out to look at all those gears and whatnot. I then proceeded to realize that the little S to F lever on the plate meant start to finish, and since the lever was at F, I came to the conclusion that in order to have the clock work again, all I had to do was reset the lever to start, and it would be good again for another long while. SO then I thought it would be ok to put it to the start position while the plate was still not screwed on. As soon as I did that the thing blew up. So now I am more than disappointed since all I literally had to do was push a lever, instead of unscrewing those screws. Going to have to bring it to the jewler tomorrow to have it fixed. Didn’t lose any parts in the explosion but I have no actual idea how to put the thing back together. I just cannot believe how idiotic the situation became. Very disappointed. 2

Oh boy! I suspect that the S-F meant slow-fast (as in adjustment for the watch's balance wheel if it runs too fast or slow). There is no Start/Finish lever in watches. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_watch 3
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 31 Posted March 31 (edited) Same old same old stuff that irks me daily, cleaning up messes made by people who go through life blithely ruining everything they touch, with zero remorse or accountability. Edited March 31 by Ace-Garageguy 4
A modeler named mike Posted March 31 Posted March 31 Surprisingly no irks this week unless you count when I replaced a vanity and wasn't ready to replace the old laminate countertop (not sure what product we would use as a replacement yet) with a semi rusted metal sink that sprung a leak above the drain tail piece in the metal of the sink when I hooked it back up. Can't really call it an irk, since it was due to be replaced, just hoping it would last a little longer till our minds were made up. Well, that's no longer the case. Settled for a cultured marble stock vanity top with the integrated sink.. 1
Tim W. SoCal Posted March 31 Posted March 31 6 hours ago, Ace-Garageguy said: Same old same old stuff that irks me daily, cleaning up messes made by people who go through life blithely ruining everything they touch, Went out on a service call to replace a steering column that another employee had diagnosed as a broken ignition rack because the ignition key would not turn. When I arrived, I verified the ignition key not turning (which is not usually caused by an ignition rack failure), broke out my trusty pocket flash light, shined it into the ignition key slot and saw a couple of lock cylinder tumblers laying inside. I keep a used ignition lock cylinder and key on my service truck for this very reason. I temporarily repaired the vehicle with the used lock cylinder and got the truck running and then returned the next day to replace the vehicle's lock set (ignition, doors, etc.). What really irks me is that the vehicle was out of service for three days and shouldn't have been out of service for more than one. 3

Falcon Ranchero Posted April 2 Posted April 2 Addition to my pocket watch dilemma; I've been kinda sad about it for the past few days since I broke it so today I am just going to have to attempt to fix it myself. Both jewlers in town charge $250 to send it away and have it fixed, but research showed that a mint condidion watch like mine, with the chain (the chain is long on on this one) is worth about $70 so mine is probably worth $40, so that means it would cost way way more to fix it than the watch is actually worth. This further means I am going to have to take matters into my own hands, which I'm a little skeptical of doing since it seems quite complicated, and every watch seems to have a relatively different mechanical arrangement than the next. On my watch only five pieces popped out, and three of them I have not a terrible idea of where they go on or how they attatch. I also have a few school assignments that are becoming a bit of a burden, but the way I see it, if I don't fix this watch I'll be miserable for at least the rest of the week so later today, I have no choice but to try again. If I could just see the arrangement I could probably put it back together, but the only photos of same watches I could find still had that back plate on; I need to see beneath that. Looks like this I need to see beneath this:

Don't do it - send it off and have it fixed, this was your grandfathers watch he most likely got a lot of use out of it. The cost outlay may have a bit of a sting to it, but having it fixed , cleaned correctly will provide you with a lifetime of service - instead of it ending up in a box of parts hidden away. You really cant put a dollar worth on something like this that will last if properly taken care of. 3

Wise advice. Very small, intricate mechanisms are not the best place to learn. Chalk up the cost of the repair as tuition, if you would happen to damage it beyond repair your going to feel way worse. 2
TonyK Posted April 2 Posted April 2 I'm surprised the jewelers won't attempt to fix it themselves. Do you have a clock shop in town? Maybe they would have a look.
Falcon Ranchero Posted April 2 Posted April 2 49 minutes ago, TonyK said: I'm surprised the jewelers won't attempt to fix it themselves. Do you have a clock shop in town? Maybe they would have a look. No clock shop; just Savoy's jewler. I did in fact get on the NAWCC (National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors) forum and showed them photos of what happened, and I have got many helpful answers already. Also got a few of the pieces back in the correct place. I just want the parts back in and the watch to be all closed up as before; doesn't need to work right now, just down the road I'd bring it in somewhere but i'd rather not have parts laying around if i can successfully put them back in.
TarheelRick Posted April 3 Posted April 3 I want to go back to the days of candles and smoke signals. Last night my smart(?)phone would not take the unlock pattern. I tried it several times and in a couple of slightly different patterns. It is now telling me I can only try 7 more times then the phone will erase all data and apps. The nearest T-Mobile store is 25 miles to the south. This morning when I woke up and tried to turn on my bedroom light the remote did not work. I changed the battery, although the one I put in it was a bit different and it still does not work. I am hoping to find a battery and that will be the solution; changing remotes in overhead fans is a royal pita. Back to the telephone. I have just recently been placed in the position of Power of Attorney for my invalid aunt. She owns a small mobile home park, and the rent was due yesterday, but I could not drive the 22 miles to the east yesterday to collect it. I have had a couple of calls from the renters, and I told them I would be there today, that was before my phone became an obstinate south-end of a north bound mule. So now I have to go over there to collect the rent, get back home and then go to T-Mobile to see what the problem with my phone is. Oh, BTW did I mention I am going to be grilling hamburgers for our girls' softball team this afternoon. 1 1
