Greg Myers Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 If you can do this http://bangshift.com/blog/watch-a-large-scale-model-of-a-1927-miller-91-race-car-get-entirely-built-of-3d-printed-parts-truly-amazing.html?utm_content=buffer0e6c0&utm_source=buffer&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=Buffer I'd say things are looking up. I saw a 3d printer in the Microsoft store last week for around $2000.
Greg Myers Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Oooops didn't read all the good stuff bellow. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=79877
Erik Smith Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Takes away the notion that you can just print something out and be ready to go. There was a lot of work put into that model. A couple of the processes (of which I had no idea existed), were also extremely messy! It's a very cool model, though.
pharoah Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 I'm guessing here, but it seems that once you make one model, all the programs are there to make as many as you want. This could be interesting in a few years if the little 3 pick up on this. They could probably save a lot on pre production and mold making. Things that really cost a lot. We shall see.
bbowser Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 Another link, now they are printing parts in metal that can withstand rocket fuel temps. http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9243224/European_Space_Agency_to_begin_printing_3D_parts_for_space_flight?source=CTWNLE_nlt_pm_2013-10-15
Ben Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 I would love to get some 3D printed figures in 1/8, 1/24, 1/12...to go with my cars....the possibilities would be endless You can actually get a scale model of yourself! The detail is unreal! http://www.thisiswhyimbroke.com/3d-printed-action-figures-of-yourself

And there is the small matter of the price tag (like $1700 worth of "small matter" )
thumper85 Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 I just picked up a makerbot about a month ago I love it !
my66s55 Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 I just picked up a makerbot about a month ago I love it ! So, what have you done with it model car wise? I have. over the last year. build a reprap prusa I3 printer. I have less than $600 into it and can do anything your makerbot can do. That's not the point. In order for this technology to move forward in our hobby, we need more people using it to make advancements than the gee golly wizz wow posts look what it can do we see here.

I bought my printer with everything in the pictures for under 500.00. Works great and I like it . I've been building models for 30 yerars if not more, and Pro mod outlaw 10.5 chassis's for over 12 years from scratch. I got the printer for not only improving my skills and parts pile with this thing but if I can help the progress of integrating these with our hobby that's what I want to do .I plan to make turbos, engine blocks, heads and small items with my makerbot.

comp1839 Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 thumper, would you mind sharing where you bought your maker bot?
thumper85 Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 comp1839 No problem I got it and everything in the pic from evil bay lol. Best deal I ever got on there. Me and my wife looked on there for the better part of 2 months and this one popped up and well I got it .
Mooneyzs Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 Thumper... That is a smoking deal for the Makerbot. I have been eyeing one myself and I know they are 2200.00 off their website. I would say you totally scored on that one. I have a good buddy of mine that is in California that has one and I am going to send some parts that I am drawing up so he can print them for me so I can see how they turn out in that machine. I would have no complaints picking one up for 500 bucks...lol
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 More from the real world... http://www.deskeng.com/articles/aabmmk.htm
comp1839 Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 thank you thumper85. a friend of mine and i were looking a splitting a replicator2. finding something that would do just engine and driveline parts would be worth the cost for me in 1/8 scale.
