RadialDragon Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) Was thinking we could get an engine source list going. The idea is to post actual Models that are worth their price just for the engines. Some resin engine kits can be pricey and sometimes cost even more then an entire model. What kits are a good option for a hot motor with good detail? This could help other modelers like me that have been out of the scene for a while... Whenever a new suggestion is posted I will update the list One model I have found to fit the drag racing type builds is the 'Revell' "1955 Jukebox Ford" kit. You can build the motor as either the Ford or Chevy version ( has 2 different intake manifolds) and the detail and fit and finish of the engine impressed me.. Listed kits - the engine (1) Revell '55 Jukebox Ford - Dual Carb BBF or BBC (2) '39 Wagon Rod - Chevrolet LT5, double-overhead cammer. (3) Revell '50 Ford pick-up - Ardun Flat Head (4) Revell '32 sedan - Flat head (5) AMT 1960 Starliner - 352 FE "The Retro issue from Round2 has two complete engines !" The SBCs have parts to join them in tandem or side-by-side. (9) AMT 1941 Plymouth - flathead six! (10) Lindberg 1964 Plymouth and Dodge - slant six. (11) AMT '71 Duster - small block (12) AMT/Ertl 1957 Chrysler 300C - 392 hemi and 3-speed TorqueFlite A488 automatic transmission. (20) Revell '32 ford 5-window coupe - Hemi (21) The Revell Ed Roth Mysterion - TWO Ford 406 /427 FE engines with multi-carb intakes. (22) The Revell parts-pack engines - The Ford 427FE (top-blown 6-71), smallblock Chevy(front-blown Potvin style), Pontiac (again top-blown 6-71), Cadillac (wrongly labeled a 354 but in reality a 331-365-390) which comes with a multi-carb setup, (23) The AMT parts-pack engines - smallblock Chevy, Pontiac, Chrysler firepower and Corvair, Allison 1710 cu.in. WWII aircraft engine (23) The later-tool AMT 1960 Chevrolet C10 - 6 cylinder engine (24) The MPC Bronco - SBF (25) AMT Econoline "Vantom/Phantom". - SBF (26) AMT 62 Thunderbird - Ford 390 CI FE (27) Revell 56 F-100 - Y-block (28) '68/'69 Revell Charger and Daytona's - 440 CI Mopar (29) Revell C6, Z06, and ZR1 Corvettes and the 2002(Auto trans) and 2010 Camaro(T-56 Trans) - Various LS Based engines (ZR1 is supercharged) (30) Revell 41 willys s/r or gasser - 392 hemi, top blown 671, (31) AMT 33 willy - blown Ford 427 cammer (32) Monogram/Revell's '59 Cadillac (excellent 390 Cadillac V8 w/ tri-power intake and all engine accessories) (33) Revell's '40 Ford - both Standard coupe & Deluxe convertible (flathead V8-85 engine & trans - and, street rod releases of both, incl speed parts for the flathead) (34) Revell's '48 Ford station wagon, chopped coupe, and convertible (flathead V8-85 engines & trans - and, street rod releases of the convertible incl speed parts for the flathead, as does the chopped coupe, but the coupe only has speed parts, and cannot be built stock) (35) Monogram Pro-Modeler labeled kits of the above '40 & '48 Ford kits (same tooling as Revell) (36) AMT's '66 Buick Riviera (nice nailhead V8 w/ all engine accessories for a stock 425 cu in engine) (37) AMT's newer-tooling version of their '57 Chevy Bel Air hardtop - the release w/ the opening trunk - (very accurate 283 cu in small block Chevy V8) (38) AMT's '57 Chrysler 300 C (excellent early 392 cu in Hemi V8 w/ all engine accessories for a stock engine) (39) Moebius' '55 Chrysler C300 (excellent early 331 cu in Hemi V8 w/ all engine accessories for a stock engine; expect their '56 300B will have the same parts to depict a 354 cu in engine) (40) Moebius' '53 Hudson (excellent inline flathead 6 w/ dual carbs) (41) Revell's '50 Olds coupe (excellent early 303 cu in Olds V8, and the just released custom version adds some speed parts for that engine (42) Revell's '57 Ford Custom 2-door sedan (excellent 312 cu in Y-block V8; and, there's a supercharged F Code 312 engine in the Fireball Robert's stock car release of same basic kit) (43) Monogram/Revell's '59 & '60 Impala coupes & convertibles (excellent 348 cu in 'W-motor' V8 w/ all engine accessories, incl tri-power intakes, for a stock engine) (44) AMT's parts packs (small block 283 small block Chevy, 421 Pontiac, early Chrysler 392? hemi, and early model CorvaIr (incl most parts for Turbo'd version) - all are hot-rodded engines w/ multiple speed parts & trans, but the Corvair lacks some pieces like sheet metal shrouds, the air cleaner's housing for Turbo version, and does not include a trans) (45) AMT's Allison V12 - excellent aircraft V12 engine that is found in their 'drag racing parts pack', as a much earlier Parts Pack for the engine only, and in their Allison-engined Thunderbird drag car) (46) Revell's engine only Parts packs (Cadillac 331 V8, Ford 427 V8, Pontiac, 421 V8, and Chevy 283 small block V8 - all are completely chrome-plated and have multiple speed parts options) Edited November 18, 2013 by RadialDragon
Deathgoblin Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 39 Wagon Rod has a nice engine. I nabbed the one out of one I butchered to use in my Camaro concept kit. The reverse of this being, the engine in the AMT 2006 Camaro Concept is worthless.
Jantrix Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 The Ardun flattie from the Revell '50 Ford pick-up is just outstanding, as well as the Revell '32 sedan flattie.
1972coronet Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 1.) The 352 FE from the AMT 1960 Starliner . The Retro issue from Round2 has two complete engines ! 2.) The 421 Pontiac from the AMT Catalina . 3.) The De Soto Firedome from the old 1953 F-100 (whose origins date back to the early 60's !!) .
Danny Lectro Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I bought AMT's Double Dragster kit just for engines to use in kitbashes. One early style Hemi with options for eight single-bbl carbs, fuel injection, or a belt-driven blower, and two small block Chevies, with fuel injection or crank mounted blowers. The SBCs have parts to join them in tandem or side-by-side. I have yet to actually put any of it together, so I can't comment on quality yet.
Tom Geiger Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 AMT 1941 Plymouth kit for the flathead six! Lindberg 1964 Plymouth and Dodge for the slant six. This one has to be the best slant ever done. Prior to that I hoarded Deoras for the 6. AMT '71 Duster for the small block
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 39 Wagon Rod has a nice engine. The engine in the Wagon Rod is a Chevrolet LT5, double-overhead cammer.
Harry P. Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 How about the engine in the Revell Orange Crate?
Toner283 Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 AMT/Ertl 1957 Chrysler 300C. Very well done multi piece easy to detail 392 cu in hemi and 3-speed TorqueFlite A488 automatic transmission.
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) Some vintage V8 engines: The Revell Anglia and Thames panel have injected Oldsmobiles that can pass for anything from 303 to 394 (1949-1963). The original Revell StoneWoodsCook Willys has the same engine, top-blown with a GMC 6-71. The Revell Orange Crate also has the same engine, but front-blown with a Potvin-style drive. Another version of the same Olds is in the (first version, NOT BB2) Revell Ed Roth Beatnik Bandit, this time top-blown with a 4-71 and multiple carbs. The Revell Mickey Thompson Challenger has 4, top-blown (6-71) Pontiacs that can pass for anything in the traditional Pontiac OHV engine line from 1955 on. The engines in the Challenger also have a nice Cragar chain-style blower drive. These Pontiacs are very similar to the tooling in the Revell parts-pack Pontiac, which has different accessories. The Tommy Ivo Showboat, also from Revell, has 4 injected Buick nailheads. These are similar to, again, the parts-pack version, which is now extremely rare. The Revell Miss Deal Studebaker funny-car has a top-blown Chrysler early "FirePower" Hemi and can pass for anything from the 1951 331 thru the later 354 and 392. This engine, once again, was available in an impossible-to-find parts-pack kit. The Revell '32 ford 5-window coupe has an early Hemi as well, with no-name valve covers. It is entirely different tooling from the earlier Revell releases. The Revell Ed Roth Mysterion has TWO Ford 406 /427 FE engines. Again, these are very similar to the Revell parts-pack 427 Ford tooling, but the Mysterion has multi-carb intakes. All the Revell '32 fords also have a good Ford Windsor that can pass for anything from a 221 to a 351W with the right accessories. And the AMT '29 Ford kit has a little Dodge "Red Ram" hemi. Ace-Garageguy Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) The Revell parts-pack engines are still widely available and cheap for what remains of the line. The Ford 427FE (top-blown 6-71), the smallblock Chevy(front-blown Potvin style), the Pontiac (again top-blown 6-71), and the mis-labeled Cadillac (wrongly labeled a 354 but in reality a 331-365-390) which comes with a multi-carb setup (as optional equipment included in the blown engines listed above) are often criticized as being "fiddly" and difficult to build, but with some care and patience, they build up into outstanding models. The AMT parts-pack engines are all outstanding...smallblock Chevy, Pontiac, Chrysler firepower and Corvair...not to mention the over-the-top Allison 1710 cu.in. WWII aircraft engine Edited November 18, 2013 by Ace-Garageguy
Fabrux Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) The later-tool AMT 1960 Chevrolet C10 is a good source for a 6 cylinder engine that can be tweaked for many different applications. The Trumpeter Novas as well, but they're getting pretty pricey for just a donor. The MPC Bronco has a pretty good SBF in it, as well as the AMT Econoline "Vantom/Phantom". AMT 62 Thunderbird as a good tri-carb Y-block; the Revell 56 F-100 has a decent Y-block as well. Edited November 18, 2013 by kataranga
Furiousgeorge Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 The 440's in the '68/'69 Revell Charger and Daytona's are excellent engines.
ChrisBcritter Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) 1.) The 352 FE from the AMT 1960 Starliner . The Retro issue from Round2 has two complete engines ! How does it compare to the FE in the Edsel kit (which is supposed to be undersize)? I've been thinking about getting a '60 to put its chassis under a Hubley '61 Ford wagon; maybe I can put that extra FE in my Edsel. Edited November 18, 2013 by ChrisBcritter
1972coronet Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 AMT/Ertl 1957 Chrysler 300C. Very well done multi piece easy to detail 392 cu in hemi and 3-speed TorqueFlite A488 automatic transmission. Good call on naming the original TorqueFlite , by its original engineering number ! As a reminder to all whom are building one of those 1957 300-C kits ( or the pending '56 300-B ) or any pre-1962 V8-specific TorqueFlites : the case was cast iron , not aluminum . The 1960 A-904-G ( "TorqueFlite-6" ) was the first aluminum trans and was available only behind the 170 and 225 Slant Six . The aluminum case 727 ( A-727 ) didn't premiere until two years later , for the 1962 models . What was the 2-speed PowerFlite engineering number ? It was "A-466" .
BKcustoms Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 A variety of LS engines can be found in the Revell C6, Z06, and ZR1 Corvettes and the 2002 and 2010 Camaro kits. The corvettes all have transaxles molded to the engine block and the ZR1 is also supercharged. The 2010 Camaro has an automatic transmission. And the 2002 Camaro has a T56 manual transmission.
tooltas Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 revels 41 willys s/r or gasser has very nice 392 hemi, top blown 671, amts 33 willy has blown 427 camer
buffalobill Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 All of the following are 1/25th scale - Monogram/Revell's '59 Cadillac (excellent 390 Cadillac V8 w/ tri-power intake and all engine accessories) Revell's '40 Ford - both Standard coupe & Deluxe convertible (flathead V8-85 engine & trans - and, street rod releases of both, incl speed parts for the flathead) Revell's '48 Ford station wagon, chopped coupe, and convertible (flathead V8-85 engines & trans - and, street rod releases of the convertible incl speed parts for the flathead, as does the chopped coupe, but the coupe only has speed parts, and cannot be built stock) Monogram Pro-Modeler labeled kits of the above '40 & '48 Ford kits (same tooling as Revell) AMT's '66 Buick Riviera (nice nailhead V8 w/ all engine accessories for a stock 425 cu in engine) AMT's newer-tooling version of their '57 Chevy Bel Air hardtop - the release w/ the opening trunk - (very accurate 283 cu in small block Chevy V8) AMT's '57 Chrysler 300 C (excellent early 392 cu in Hemi V8 w/ all engine accessories for a stock engine) Moebius' '55 Chrysler C300 (excellent early 331 cu in Hemi V8 w/ all engine accessories for a stock engine; expect their '56 300B will have the same parts to depict a 354 cu in engine) Moebius' '53 Hudson (excellent inline flathead 6 w/ dual carbs) Revell's '50 Olds coupe (excellent early 303 cu in Olds V8, and the just released custom version adds some speed parts for that engine Revell's '57 Ford Custom 2-door sedan (excellent 312 cu in Y-block V8; and, there's a supercharged F Code 312 engine in the Fireball Robert's stock car release of same basic kit) Monogram/Revell's '59 & '60 Impala coupes & convertibles (excellent 348 cu in 'W-motor' V8 w/ all engine accessories, incl tri-power intakes, for a stock engine) AMT's parts packs (small block 283 small block Chevy, 421 Pontiac, early Chrysler 392? hemi, and early model CorvaIr (incl most parts for Turbo'd version) - all are hot-rodded engines w/ multiple speed parts & trans, but the Corvair lacks some pieces like sheet metal shrouds, the air cleaner's housing for Turbo version, and does not include a trans) AMT's Allison V12 - excellent aircraft V12 engine that is found in their 'drag racing parts pack', as a much earlier Parts Pack for the engine only, and in their Allison-engined Thunderbird drag car) Revell's engine only Parts packs (Cadillac 331 V8, Ford 427 V8, Pontiac, 421 V8, and Chevy 283 small block V8 - all are completely chrome-plated and have multiple speed parts options)
buffalobill Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Isn't the engine found in AMT's '62 Thunderbird a 390 FE series engine, and not a Y-block? (t's my understanding that the final use of a Y block in a passenger car was in 1960 - a 292 w/ a 2 barrel carb only in Fords, and a 2 barrel only 312 was in the '60 Mercurys; 292 Y blocks were available thru '64 in Ford trucks.. The largest Ford Y block was the 312 ( and not to be confused w/ Lincoln that did have their version of a Y block style V8, but it was an entirely different engine, and somewhat larger inside & out than the Ford/Mercury Y blocks, w/ the largest Lincoln Y block having 368 cu in - it was standard equipment in the '56 & '57 Lincolns, and optional on some '57 Mercurys)
1972coronet Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 How does it compare to the FE in the Edsel kit (which is supposed to be undersize)? I've been thinking about getting a '60 to put its chassis under a Hubley '61 Ford wagon; maybe I can put that extra FE in my Edsel. Unfortunately , I'm not sure how the 352 in the '60 Starliner compares / contrasts with the Edsel's FE , as I've never perused the Edsel kit (not out of disinterest , mind you) . Perhaps the engine in the Edsel is of the M-E-L series ?
ChrisBcritter Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 No, since it's a Pacer it would be an FE (361ci), labeled E-400. The Corsair and Citation had the MEL (410ci), labeled E-475. I do have an FE in my '62 T-bird I could check it against, as well as the original engines in my '62 Mercury and '63 Galaxie.
Ace-Garageguy Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) Isn't the engine found in AMT's '62 Thunderbird a 390 FE series engine, and not a Y-block? Yes. The most immediately obvious identifier of an FE engine is the fact that the rocker-boxes are partially formed by the intake manifold. This is an unusual design unique to the FE, not shared by either the Y-block or the MEL. It is depicted correctly on the AMT '62 T-bird engine. The FE in the AMT version of the '60 Starliner, though not the exact same tooling as the engine in the '62 'Bird, was obviously developed and tooled from the same data. The scaling is identical. zenrat Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) Revell '68 Charger has both a 440 Magnum and a 426 Hemi. Revell Hemi Dart has both a 440 Magnum and a 426 Hemi. IMC/Testors '48 Ford convertible has a Ford Flathead V8 and a rather undersized Ford Cammer with carbies or injection. AMT 33 Willys Van has a supercharged Ford Cammer with a chunk missing from the top of the gearbox for frame clearance. AMT "Old Mould" '57 Chevrolet has a carburetted Small Block Chevy and a S.C.o.T. supercharged "W" motor with sidedraft carburetters and an enclosed blower drive. Both engines have holes through the sump but it's worth picking up a cheap copy of the kit (and there are plenty out there) for the blower. AMT '70 Chevy Monte Carlo has a stock 454 Big Block Chevy with absolutely no tuning parts. Revell '69 'vette has a (I want to say) 427 Big Block Chevy with tripower. Revell '59 Impala has a 348 W motor with tripower. AMT '62 Impala has a 348/409 W motor. Buy the convertible for the engine as it has all the optional parts in the one box. Apologies if i've repeated what anyone has said earlier but i'm typing on page 2 and it's a pain to go back and look whats on the list. Not all Lindberg '64 Dodges and Plymouths have a slant 6. The Super Stock (or Super Sport if you have one of the incorrectly printed boxes) Dodge 330s have a 426(?) Max Wedge or a 426 Hemi depending on which version. The "Old 53 F100" listed is more acurately described as the AMT Trophy Series kit. Edited November 18, 2013 by zenrat
om617 Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 AMT`s 1970 Dodge Coronet "Dirty Donny" Pro street have the SOHC Hemi 426 + 3 intake options.
buffalobill Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 re: the Ardun cylinder heads for the flathead Ford V8 in Revell's '50 Ford F-1 pickup - the rocker-covers/heads in the first release of that kit are inaccurate, but were corrected in the later release(s) of the F-1. However, one would need to strip the chrome plating off of them, as Ardun rocker covers & heads were not plated. fyi - correct Ardun heads, etc are available in resin from Replicas & Miniatures of MD to convert other 1/25 Ford/Mercury flatheads.
