JsonRacer Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Hello all, First post and first model I have made. This is a Monogram Shelby Cobra 427 S/C I randomly picked up at a hobby store. Thought it would be fun to build a model car so I thought I would hit the store. Bought this model, some glue, knives, and paint and ended up with this finished product. The paint took me two tries but with the help of reading this forum I was able to get it looking alright. Painted it metallic blue instead of red and opted to omit the white stripes as frankly the water decals scared me a little. Enjoy, Jason
wrecker388 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Looks great! If this is a newer issue the decals should be fine. On my first model I had to make my own glue mixture for the decals to get them to stick.
crazyjim Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 First time out? WOW! A gorgeous build and so SHINY :)
Belugawrx Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Very nice paint job and the perfect colour for a 427 Awesome build dude Keep goin'
JsonRacer Posted January 9, 2014 Author Posted January 9, 2014 Thanks guys! I used Tamiya primer, Tamiya Metallic blue, and Testor's one-coat laquer. The first paint job was horrendous so I was glad to have this forum to guide me in the right direction. This is a great hobby you have going on and I have already started on my second kit. I might be hooked!
Belugawrx Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Learn from everyone and every model you make try decals on the next one and then.... Get some Micro-Set and go back and put those stripes on 'er
TooOld Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Hey Jason ! You did really fine on your first model . Not too many people attempt painting their first one so I'd say you're off to an excellent start ! Welcome to the hobby and to the forum . . . remember . . . have fun !
vamach1 Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) Great job on a kit that has stood the test of time. Here is one I built 20+ years ago. You will notice a few differences - 1 4bbl vs. 2 carbs and wire wheels vs. alibrands. This kit can be built numerous ways (street w/o side pipes) to a full blown racer and someday I'll build a few more. Back then there were not as many sources for decals (guages, emblems) so most everything had to be hand painted. These shortcuts which isn't a bad thing and you can spend more time on engine wiring or chassis detailing if you like or move on to the next project. Keep up the good work. PappyD340 Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 FANTASTIC job for the first time out, looks great and BTW WELCOME to the forum!!
Skydime Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Looks pretty sweet for a first...heck even tenth attempt. Hopefully, you will put the current build in the "on the workbench" section and show it off as you go. Not only does everyone get to see your work but, it will give you a chance to ask questions along the way.
kendog261 Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Wow nice paint job for your first build. I have repainted one of the models I'm working on five times because I thought it was bad so be super happy with the paint job and welcome to the forum.
qkenuf4u Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 for a "FIRST" build thats pretty dang nice...
slusher Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Sharp build Jason and nice choice in model subject.
charlie8575 Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Excellent. I can sincerely say we'll enjoy your progress. This forum has a lot of great help, and it's good to see you taking advantage of it. Charlie Larkin
realgone58 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Nice paint! Welcome to the hobby, glad you are already working on another kit.
disabled modeler Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Jason... I like it...my first was nowhere near that good...LOL...
bosshog Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Ummm dang thats some good paint son, looks really really good. love it.
1972coronet Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Welcome , Jason ! Your AC Cobra looks exemplery , especially for your first build :) . Good call on chosing Tamiya paints . You can't go wrong with their excellent aerosol (synthetic lacquer) or their brush-on paints (acrylic) . I've used Tamiya almost exclusively for 20 years . Can't wait to see your next build !
