charlie8575 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I wonder how well that "corn-blend" gasoline worked in the 1930s? Interesting set of pictures. Anyone know where that car parking tower was located? Charlie Larkin
Eshaver Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Charlie , the Texaco station and the car tower were in Chicago .
charlie8575 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Charlie , the Texaco station and the car tower were in Chicago . Cool. That car tower is giving me some ideas..... Charlie Larkin
Eshaver Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Charlie , I have a couple shots of the place . .......................
Ju Ju Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Charlie , the Texaco station and the car tower were in Chicago . http://vintageportland.wordpress.com/tag/modish-building/ I don't mean to challenge your gas station expertise there Ed-but that building was in Portland, Oregon
Eshaver Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Julius , Chevron oil built one out there too. Different design ....................
slantasaurus Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Charlie , the Texaco station and the car tower were in Chicago . Sorry Ed, that tower is NOT, I repeat NOT in Chicago. There might have been a similar one in Chicago, but the one posted is not in Chicago.
Bad Brad #2 Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 JuJu, how did you know that wasn't Chicago?
Ju Ju Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 JuJu, how did you know that wasn't Chicago? Well, I figured it had to be on the West coast-because if it had been on the East coast that lady crossing the street would have been heading the opposite direction................
Eshaver Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Charlie , this the one you were referring to ?
Brizio Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 The first picture in the link is from the Bomber here in OR, they will restore it and bring back to flight. They already start to restore some parts like the nose is done after a $300K job... It will take 3 years and $4million to have it fly again. In the past you could (mostly kid) climb on it and play in it during the stop a the gas station. After they close it because is to dangerous and it is falling a part. I toke this picture last year during the Bomber Cruise In... There is The Bomber Restaurant too, good food, this is the menu. And a lot of picture when it was used as gas station. And on the other side of the parking lot there is a little museum, with toons of cool stuff, plus part for teh B-17. And the Bomber Burger with the "secret weapon"!!! And if you eat it all, you get free ice cream!
Eshaver Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 This Sinclair is in Florida , I may be doing a story for Still Runnin magazine on it , stay tuned .
Ju Ju Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Charlie , this the one you were referring to ? YEP- That is the Modish Building in Portland, Oregon
jaydar Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Charlie , this the one you were referring to ? According to google, the Modish Building is/was in Portland.
charlie8575 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Charlie , this the one you were referring to ? That most certainly is, Ed. I'm guessing from the description at Historic Portland, these things used some kind of gantry-elevator mechanism? This would be a very cool way to display plenty of cars in a somewhat limited space, even if you just did one side. Anyone have pictures of the elevator from this or something similar? From what I understand, something very similar to this is still used in Manhattan and perhaps one other area of New York City. If anyone has more information, please share. Charlie Larkin
charlie8575 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 This Sinclair is in Florida , I may be doing a story for Still Runnin magazine on it , stay tuned . What a neat gas station. Styrofoam for the dinosaur, perhaps? Charlie Larkin
Eshaver Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Charlie , I've kicked this station around as the lady I write for is from the area where the station in Florida resides . Pretty much, one could build the "Skeleton " using a series of "Shaped " Foam core strips and suspended temporarily using florist wire . The rest of the photographs show two different buildings . Still, they both employ the Foamcore and suspended Florist wire . I use Polyester Fiberglass to cover the skeletons when I'm satisfied that the Foam skeleton is reasonably close to the shape needed . I use Automobile filler, aka Bondo to fill the imperfections . The first building is The Zep Diner that was in Hawthorne California , a south central city that was merged into the L A county years back . The second building is Quality Oil #5 in Winston Salem North Carolina . Thankfully, this building was at least restored to it's former glory back in 1995. The last building is the former , The Fish Inn , a wooden structure built around 1928 in Core de Adeline Idaho near the Washington border . This building suffered a massive grease fire in 1992 .
David G. Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I enjoy seeing these old gas stations and cars. Thanks to everybody who posted the pictures! David G.
lordairgtar Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 (edited) http://vintageportland.wordpress.com/tag/modish-building/ I don't mean to challenge your gas station expertise there Ed-but that building was in Portland, Oregon I googled Portland and found the Modish building on street view. It is in Portland, but it is on park and oak, one block away. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=portland+oregon&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x54950b0b7da97427:0x1c36b9e6f6d18591,Portland,+OR&gl=us&ei=8WHuUoTUEsWPqwHtsYGYDw&ved=0CKQBELYD Edited February 2, 2014 by lordairgtar
