bbowser Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 So I finished this one last night. Built it as a curbside as there is little detail on the chassis and the engine. The multi-piece body isn't too bad, there are things I would do differently if I build another but I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out. Comments welcome, thanks for looking! In my opinion the tires/wheels are too small for the car, but it doesn't really show in those giant wheelwells. I may attempt the '48 Lincoln at some point.
Danno Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Those Auburns are great looking cars and your model is a credit to real McCoys. You did a great job with a sniggly kit. Kudos.
CaptainAhab Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Very clean built, I dig it. I do agree with Harry, could be sitting a little lower so the wheel wells hug the tires. Nice job on what can be a brutal kit
Furiousgeorge Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Looks good. I've got this one in the starting stages. Hope mine turns out as well as yours.
sjordan2 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Looks good, but riding a bit too high.Even if it were lowered a hair, I think Bruce is right that the wheels are too small. Maybe one of the Monogram Classics kits could supply better wheels? And, as mentioned, this is a sniggly, brutal kit requiring way more attention than it deserves, so this is an excellent achievement. At least the Lindberg kit has chrome parts that were not plated on the original Pyro tooling. This one gave me fits when I was a kid.
Sixties Sam Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Very nice build of a great classic! Great finish! Sam
Harry P. Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Even if it were lowered a hair, I think Bruce is right that the wheels are too small... No, it's not the wheel size. It's the fact that the fender openings aren't concentric with the diameter of the wheels/tires. Here's a quick 5-minute PS hack job... same size wheels, just dropped the car so that the diameters of the wheels and wheel openings are concentric... that makes it look "right."
sjordan2 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) I still say the wheels - or at least the tires - are too small, regardless of the width of the whitewalls. It's marginal, but noticeable. You can also see that the kit's windshield is too tall and not correctly rounded on the corners (also a marginal difference). In any case, this build manages to make the hood fit flush, which few modelers have done from the works I've seen. I never did figure out how to make the too-vertical radiator/grille lean back a bit more. None of this is intended to denigrate the quality of the way the model was built, which is one of the best versions of this kit that I've seen. Edited February 15, 2014 by sjordan2
bbowser Posted February 15, 2014 Author Posted February 15, 2014 The lowering is a marginal improvement, but as Skip's photo shows the tires need to be much bigger IMO. I see I should have made the running board steps chrome instead of black .
Harry P. Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Skip, the car you posted has much wider whitewalls–almost the entire sidewall of the tire, from wheel rim down to the tread, is white. That's what giving the illusion of larger wheels/tires. If Bruce's model had the same wide whitewalls, it would look just like the car in your photo. If you study the two photos closely, you'll see that the outer diameter of the tires on both Bruce's model and the real car are pretty much identical. You can see on the real car that the outer diameter of the tires is smaller than the radius of the wheel openings. Same with Bruce's model.

slusher Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Super nice build Bruce. Great color. I think she looks great as is....
blunc Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 (edited) this was an excellent effort on a kit that is a pain for the average builder and (IMHO) a challenge for an advanced builder. I have one of these in my stash to build and after comparing the built kit to a photo of the real car it looks like Pyro / Lindberg could have used some more research or tweaking of their design specs for the kit. The main body is too tall and the fenders seem to miss the voluptuous nature of the real car. I will have a real task to make my build assume the character of the real car. bbowser Posted February 15, 2014 Author Posted February 15, 2014 Thanks for all the encouraging comments. This is my first 'pre-war' car in a long time and I appreciate everyone who took the time to comment.

There are some really good kits out there.
Shardik Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 (edited) Bruce, That is an excellent rendition of my favorite car. Amazing that you were able to achieve this result from such a substandard kit. One thing I MUST KNOW: What paint did you use for the body? That looks like a perfect match for Marlene Dietrich's car. Speedpro Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Nice build! I like the color you painted it.
