lordairgtar Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 (edited) Always interesting going to Chicago. I had to pick up my step daughter at Midway Airport (apparently landing at Mitchell costs way more) when she returned from a birthday trip to Tampa. I'll say that I had quite the adventure driving the toll roads. Mostly uneventful but there sure was the traffic going down. Driving on Cicero Ave was like being in a demo derby or obstacle course. Trucks flying out of driveways and people just crossing the road in front of you. WOW! Going back was faster...you guys in Chicago do not obey your speed limits at all. Snow plows were plowing off the shoulders keeping up with the traffic. wasn't too bad except for the one time I was put in white out conditions when the plow near me hit a drift. At 40 mph that would not be so bad, but at 80mph it was "o ###### o ###### o ###### o ######" until I cleared it. ######!!! I think my anal orifice did not relax until I crossed back into Wisconsin. slusher Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 It seems every time I go to Chicago (home) I get stuck in traffic. The only good thing is my wife and son get to look around. I miss the food so much. I always enjoy my visits but don't want to live there again. I have been gone way too long to live in the city again... 9
charlie8575 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 When one of my friends moved out to Skokie, and I was going up to Milwaukee, I took US 41, which got me around all the tolls. I will agree the traffic there was rather amazing. Neat city, though. I'd love to go back and visit- but in the spring or summer when it's not so cold. Charlie Larkin
cobraman Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Did you stop and get some White Castles at 63 rd. and Cicero ? That's one of the first things I would get when I go back home although at a different store. Love those one bite belly bombs !
High octane Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 While I'm a Chicago "native" I haven't lived in the city for 40 years now, and after my mom had passed on, I don't really go into Chicago much at all.

Charlie Larkin Hey Charlie - that's the exact same US 41 that's about 1/2 mile from my front door.
Joe Handley Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I try not to go into Chicago for anything more than the yearly Manufacturer's Auto Show or the occasional trip to the Museum of Science and Industry, now my Sister regularly goes for to Blackhawks games........although she's getting tired of every game she goes to being during a snow storm

cobraman Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Oh ya, those too. Was a great place near 63 rd and Pulaski.
Lownslow Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 the speed limits are for reference of how fast you should be going if you see a cop.
slusher Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Oh ya, those too. Was a great place near 63 rd and Pulaski. I use to get them on Western ave from a place called Tony's and Larry's. Also over on Addison by Wriggly field.
Harry P. Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 you guys in Chicago do not obey your speed limits at all... "Speed limits?"
Tom Geiger Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 the speed limits are for reference of how fast you should be going if you see a cop. Rush hour in New Jersey - Commuters bumper to bumper, all going 75 in a 55. Everyone slams their brakes at once and it all comes to a halt. Then a minute later they're back to bumper to bumper, all going 75 again. Cops don't even want to mess with that well choreographed ballet! Doing the speed limit in NJ is just being in the way! I had a neighbor who was a state trooper and he said that they would never bother someone going 75. He said if you want to get pulled over, drive erratically or change lanes dangerously. He also said the good part was that he didn't need to worry about profiling when he saw a car that his gut told him was suspicious, because EVERYONE was speeding. So he could easily justify pulling over anyone!
lordairgtar Posted March 16, 2014 Author Posted March 16, 2014 Did you stop and get some White Castles at 63 rd. and Cicero ? That's one of the first things I would get when I go back home although at a different store. Love those one bite belly bombs ! I honestly do not know what the appeal of White Castle is. I had them years ago and just got ill. Don't like the taste, don't like the concept. There are way better burgers out here than those. I don't even eat McDs. We have Culvers here which is way better for fast food chains. I prefer independent stores for burgers. BTW, I did see the store you refer too. I wished I would have gotten a Chicago Dog, but the kids were in no mood to stop.
High octane Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I woulda stopped for a "Chicago dog" anyway and let the kids sit in the car. My friend who lives in the Denver area takes Chicago dogs and Italian beef sandwiches on the plane with him when he comes here, as he is a "Chicago native" as well.
Tom Geiger Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I honestly do not know what the appeal of White Castle is. I had them years ago and just got ill. White Castle is a cultural / nostalgic thing. People go there because they did as a kid, or it reminds them of home. They are greasy little mutant burgers... ever notice that the entire restaurant is decorated in white bathroom tiles? Coincidence? I think not!
crazyjim Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Never have and never will eat White Castle "sliders". YUCK!!!
Tom Geiger Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Never have and never will eat White Castle "sliders". YUCK!!! A funny thing... White Castle didn't call them 'sliders', it was just slang that developed because they slid right through you (see above reference to bathroom tile). With the past ten years, they started calling them 'sliders' in their commercials. Then somehow tiny burgers became an appetizer item and a lot of chains / restaurants picked up on it. Something tells me that none of them understand the original intent of that term!
cobraman Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I like them. I will admit there are better burgers such as Culvers and In and Out but when I was a young lad White Castle was the only place around where I was at 1 am in the morning. They have the frozen ones in the grocery store and I get them once in awhile but if you don't care for the fresh ones you would hate the frozen ones.
Joe Handley Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I can honestly say I've yet.to eat a White Castle Slider, but then again, I prefer my food to sit around and stick with me for a while after I eat it.
High octane Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I've never had an In & Out Burger, but I heard they're great. I'll hafta try 'em next time I'm on the left coast.

I have left Chicago with some dogs with me for the drive home last time I was in the city several years ago. We have crystals here almost the same a white castle but they tend to up set my stomach and never eat more then 1 or 2 burgers...
mikemodeler Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Having moved from the area nearly 9 years ago, I can attest to issue of "missing" certain foods. I have discovered that getting them shipped here to Charlotte is a possibility and while it isn't cheap, it can be nice to have that Portillo's beef, a Vienna dog & sesame bun, Malnatti's pizza & Eli's Cheesecake! It is not the same as actually visiting those eateries, but can cure some homesickness.
High octane Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I was havin' lunch at Portillo's last Sunday and drove by one on the way home from dinner elsewhere with my better half tonight. Hopefully I'll get to a Portillo's next week. I'm getting older and can't do Portillo's everyday. like I've done in the past for a whole month. LOL! Sliders are okay once in awhile, and I have some in the freezer that I can pop in the microwave at times. I think the first time I had White Castles was in the early 60's when I lived in the city.
