ERIK88 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 As I'm getting older , I'm realizing I'm not customizing model cars as much as I used to with big rims and flashy paint outside of factory stock . I'm beginning to have an appreciation for stock builds, stock rims , factory correct paint, etc. Is this normal? Lol have any of you guys experienced this transition? Lol
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I don't think I've ever built a stocker since I was a kid, and even then I always used all the stick-on custom bits. One big reason I don't build stock now, though there ARE some cars I'd like to do stock, is that I've yet to master BMF. Without good chrome, stock seems pointless to me.
Rob Hall Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I've never had an interest in custom, I stick w/ stock or realistically modified--street machine style, Pro Touring, etc.
ERIK88 Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 I'm kinda the same way now rob , maybe I'll do subtle modifications like rally's or cragars but keep the car clean.
MADDOG Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I always built my kits as big and loud as possible. But now if I really liked the kit.... I will build 2 of them. One stock. One drag or race.
Guest Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I guess I'm not old enough to appreciate factory stock yet.
cartpix Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Like my real cars, I can't keep anything stock. A wheel/ tire swap, only, is the closest to stock, I can get.
ERIK88 Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 Lol haha, idk if it comes with age or what, who knows maybe I'll get back to that modified car phase again! Lol. For now I'm enjoying the simplicity and beauty of a factory stock build
ERIK88 Posted April 27, 2014 Author Posted April 27, 2014 (edited) Even my real car is all stock ' 2001 honda civic lx . Something I am sure most people will tune up and race around in!!!. I think there is a stage where too many aftermarket parts and stuff can actually make any real car look cheap, or kinda off. If a car is going to be modded it has to be modded correctly , not like one aftermarket ground effects bumper in the front and the back stock lol, or a million colors or stripes in a hood or body, and you wonder why that is there? Lol. Or a different color hood , primered hood and the rest painted. Edited April 27, 2014 by ERIK88
Lownslow Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 only to get stuff done but none of my cars are actually 100% stock.
JollySipper Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 There are too many rules to follow when building a factory stock build. Upholstry pattern has to be correct, rims, engine, etc.... With a custom the only limits you have are your skill and imagination!
customsrus Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 I enjoy building customs and one off prototypes. I have tried to build a factory stock vehicle but they always seem to modified in the end.

I´m into movie cars but have found my appreciation for stock vehicles through the "I am Legend" Shelby and the "Drive Angry" Chevelle. The Shelby is already done and was added to the under glass section some time ago: The Chevelle isn´t done yet. It´s got to be a ´71 and I´ll have to scratchbuild the grille. BTW...it´s AMT´s ´72 Chevelle on a shortened AMT ´70 Monte Carlo chassis. Fit is nice and super-tight in case someone is interested in superdetailing one of AMT´s ´70 or ´72 Chevelles. The cut on the floorpan is easily hidden by the transmission support bar. Some more impressions from the earlier stages: However...some other bone stock builds have been added to the to-do-list. This way I can have my customizing fun with movie cars and please the rivet-counter that is inside of me with them stock builds.
disabled modeler Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I am a factory stock guy but do sometimes build a custom from the past of modeling.
Metalmad Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I seem to always add something to a build if its something mild or really detailed. But its about fifty fifty on my builds.
jrherald420 Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I really only build stock. Always have a car i want to build. Guess when i run out i will start making my own custom builds.
jbwelda Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 No, actually, I don't. But hey, thanks for asking! jb
slusher Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I have very few factory stock. I build most the way I would want a real 1;1 to look if I owned it. I guess that's the kid imagination still inside me...
peter31a Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 It's funny you ask this question as it came up down at NNL East. When I first joined a model car club over 20 years ago, I said I was mainly interested in replica stock. But over the intervening years I've found I could now basically care less about stock and am now far more interested in rods & customs. In the Revell 3rd quarter announcements I find I could care less about the 67 Camaro or the new Mustang etc but am really excited about the Blue Bandito. If you'd have told me that 20 years ago I would have said "No Way! I have no use for hot rods!" It's funny how we change over the years.

It its stock, it has no originality, nothing artistic beyond the original design. Why would I want to build someone else's design?
om617 Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I enjoy the the mix of modern tecknology with classic design. I also admire the crafmaship of those who do radical custom kits even if it`s not always my cup of tea. As for myself i just cant leave anything completely stock because i have to at least adjust the ride height or change the wheels, and then the ball start rolling lol.
Ron Hamilton Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I like to build Factory Stock for the most part. I like to do models that are not normally seen on the tables.
