Mike_G Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Amazing how much noise one little filter can make!Ain't that the truth, although this is a 500gal/hr power filter so it's not all that little, lolDo you keep tropical fish?
cobraman Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Years ago when I was much younger I had shelving in my room with about 12 tanks. Most were 10 or 5 gallon. I had a 20 gallon community tank in the living room. You want to talk about loud pumps ? I had two piston style pumps doing the tanks in my bedroom. They were pretty noisy I can tell you.
Tom Geiger Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I used to have a 55 gallon tank in my living room. I kept fancy gold fish and man did they live forever and get huge!

I remember those old piston pumps, they sure were noisy. I got started in the aquarium hobby in 1971- back then a 55 gallon was a huge tank. These days I'm breeding African cichlids of the Aulonocara Stuartgranti complex
unclescott58 Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Why breed fish your not going to eat? Breed some Walleye or Northerns. ?

unclescott58 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 I went with friends to a lutefisk dinner last night at a local church. I've haven't had lutefisk since my mother passed away almost ten years ago now. For those who don't know, lutefisk is Scandinavian delicacy normally served around Christmas time. It is cod fish that has been preserved in lye. The lye is then soaked out of the fish. It is when cooked and consumed. It sounds awful, and amongst Scandinavians and non Scandinavians alike you'll hear a lot of jokes about how bad lutefisk is. Especially the smell. And the jello like texture. But, most of this is overly exaggerated. The smell is distinct. But, if it smells too strong and has a jello like appearance, it's been cooked wrong. Well cooked lutefisk should still be somewhat flaky, like normal fish.Normally lutefisk is not something I overly look forward to. I don't mind it. But, once a year around Christmas time has always been enough. And since not having it in last ten years, I was wondering if I was really going to like it at all now. I guess the Norwegian half of me still has a strong hold over me. I actually enjoyed it a lot! In fact I was surprised how much I liked it. I definitely plan on going back next year!Oh, and company I went with was great. One of the few high school friends I still keep in regular contact with, and his wife. He like me, is half Norwegian and half Fin. His wife is full Norwegian. (Not having any Finish blood in her, I feel sorry for her.) My buddy, who's also named Scott, sister is very active in the Lutheran church were this dinner takes place. I feel sorry for her poor husband, who has no Scandinavian background, raised Catholic, and has a allergy to eating fish. And yet every year he helps with severing this meal. Yet with his outgoing personality, don't feel too sorry for him. Between the Swedish meatballs and his active participation in the church, which he loves. I don't really feel sorry for him at all. I just think it was terrible of Scott's sister to take a nice Catholic boy like he was and corrupt him with the Lutheran ways and lutefisk. (Though in 25 or so years it hasn't seemed to harm him. And his Catholic parents and siblings, whom I also know, haven't rejected him. So I suspect he'll be okay.)One last thing. In case your wondering. There are a surprising number of people out there who like lutefisk. The church had at least three seatings, maybe more, with right around 200 people at each! And every year you have to get your tickets by November, because they sell out! So see. Lutefisk is maybe not that bad after all.
Danno Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Scott, A true Scandahoovian has been there, done that, and has the T-shirt! I have one of these. A fellow club member, also a Lutefisk survivor, gave me this T-shirt a few years ago. I earned it throughout my youth. Oh, ya, you betcha, dern tootin' don't cha know.

unclescott58 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Oh, I forgot to mention who lutefisk was invented. Back in the Viking days, the Irish got tired of these rude northern neighbors coming to visit from time to time. So to get rid of them, they decided to start serving them cod poisoned with lye. Instead of killing the Vikings off. They kept coming back for second and third helpings. ?

Someday, Scott, I'll have to trek out to Minneapolis and try what sounds like the world's only edible lutefisk! How far are you from Burnsville? I have free room there courtesy of a friend. If you are coming, I'd wait until about May and June when it's beautiful here. When you do come out, remember the second Wednesday of every mouth is the Model Car Club of Minneasota meeting. I'm afraid it's on my side of town. But, if you get out here, we go out to dinner after each meeting and I'd be willing buy you a meal. And you will not have to have lutefisk. (In fact you can not get lutefisk were we go to eat!)
