I'd like to shop there but I keep bursting into flames every time I walk through the door. Darn crosses...

Hey, I get hit by lightning!

I went to Hobby Lobby. The first thing I noticed was that all the parking spaces were reserved for Clergy, so I parked in the back of the lot and proceeded to the store. I was greeted at the door by a minister who made me denounce Satan and swear on a bible for admission.....

It's a joke son! :)

I am in no way religious, but I respect people who stand up for their beliefs and principles (except for Islamic jihadists). I have never in any way felt gospel-bombed at any Hobby Lobby,

I wouldn't worry until guys in white short-sleeved shirts and black ties show up at your door with a Hobby Lobby catalogue.

Hobby Lobby, quite possibly Gods gift to hobbies :D

lol, relax, kidding folks. I love the place myself. they have what I want, they have stuff I didn't know I wanted. it's a great store in my opinion. I have yet to be bludgeoned by religious stuff, and not even sure the store I frequent plays music. when I go there, I am on a mission, hit the kit isle, then wander looking for clearance items [have scored a ton of deals], then wander the rest of the isles looking for junk that will work for other than intended use [i.e. how can I adapt this to model building?]

I gotta admit, I must not have hit the 'religion' isle yet, as all the stuff I see there is pretty cool, and they seem to cover a lot of hobbies.

my biggest complaint [as a chevy fan] is they have too much ford stuff :P

again, just kidding, the selection of metal signage they have is way cool, and every now and again, all that stuff is 50% off.

for me, the place is a win/win. your mileage may vary.

I have to agree with this, and to be completely honest, I never notice probably due to the lack of just not paying attention any religious items in the stores.

But I just dont care to be honest, I am there to buy products.

Nor have I. In fact, I have never even seen any religious articles of any kind in my three local HLs. There is absolutely no religious "vibe" to the place at all. I guess inventory varies by geographic location. Maybe they are different in "bible belt" areas, but in metro Chicago the HL stores are as secular as any other store... the only thing that sets them apart in any way is the fact that they are closed on Sunday.

I'm not offended by anything Hobby Lobby does. I'm way more offended by the perpetually-offended whiners who complain about things like Hobby Lobby's owner's private religious rights. B)

I have noticed myself that inventory in other stores are different in other places I have visited. I thought it might be up to the department managers who may order but not sure how that works.

I think you're right... inventory varies depending on the area of the country.

The Hobby Lobby I go to the managers there have told me if they didn't have a model on the shelf that i wanted they would order it for me.Haven't ever done it but may have to some day. I go in all the time to look for anything I can use for models.

I went yesterday and didn't see anything religious and there was no music at all. It may be regional and bible belt but even then i have never heard of anyone having to confess their sins, give 10%, or accept a savior to shop there. It's the Home Depot of hobby. It has lots of everything but specializes in nothing.

How does the Hobby Lobby differ from a Michaels as far as the kit selection?

They're supposedly opening one down the road but it's taking a long time for some reason.

Is it worth going to?

Anybody else think this was posted simply because hl has been in the news and the O.P. posted the remark to see if they could get a rise out of folks. That is the feeling I get when I read it

I thought the original HL controversy was them denying their workers contraceptives through their Health care provided by hobby lobby? And most of the Religious stuff I found was in the woodworking sections. I could build a house made of crosses from what they had. But I justst wanted wooden letters for a chest thing.

Could be different at your location, but here, Michael's selection of models, paint and anything model related is a joke compared to Hobby Lobby. One thing tho, Michael's carries Badger airbrushes whereas Hobby Lobby carries Iwata. I'm an Iwata person myself but I know Badger is very populer amongst modelers. I remember when I was a child, Michael's had a much much larger selection of anything Model related. But this could be regional I'm not sure, perhaps Hl has the model market cornered here so Michael's doesn't bother.

I saw that.. a full selection of wood crosses in all kinds of sizes, all primer white.... like the ones people put on on the road.

Actually, HL provides healthcare benefits for their employees that included 16 varieties of contraception. However, they refuse to provide 4 types of "birth control" that were 'morning after' types. HL's owners objected to those 4 on the basis of their religious beliefs, because those 4 were in essence chemical abortions. The issue decided by the Supreme Court was that they were not denying all contraceptives, but that they were denying payments for chemical abortions. The Supreme Court decided they had that right and it was not unreasonable since employees have 16 options for preventing pregnancy without killing fetuses.

Accurately stated, Danno. As far as HL kit selection compared to Michael's, my local HL has an entire aisle of model kits, while the nearby Michael's probably has 1/4 of that amount. Michael's stock also seems to veer more towards the "lowest common denomonator" type of kits your likely to find at Wal-Mart. I recently purchased the MPC Laguna Pepsi stock car reissue at HL. You're not likely to find a kit like that at the nearby Michael's.

Michael's are fairly common in the Chicago metro area, and not all of them carry model kits. The next nearest one to me doesn't carry any kits at all.

It's also definitely true that HL kit selection varies, either by store or by region. I've seen several folks on here post that they've purchased Moebius kits at HL, but my local one doesn't carry them at all, for some reason. Not a huge problem for me, since my LHS has a great kit selection and competitive prices. Makes decisions easy for me: if HL carries a kit I want, I purchase it there using a 40% off coupon. If they don't, I patronize my LHS instead. Pretty much turns out to be a 50/50 mix for me.

I don't think the kit selection at any Michaels stores varies, no matter the location.

I know of four Michaels in my area that still have kits that were release four years on the shelves still.

By the way, I found religious items in Micheals when I was in there today. I didn't burst into flames! But, it was close.

Thank God you got out alive...
