bbowser Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Another fine build from your bench, Mark. You really do the "old iron" justice.
jjsipes Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Looks great. I've one of these started as well. Thanks for sharing it.
MarkJ Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 Very nice, Mark! Who did the decal sheet? I did. They are inkjet decals printed on testors paper. One was a white sheet for the contengecies and the other was a clear sheet for the numbers and letters such as Herb's name and the items on the hood and trunk and front fenders. The white stripes for the numbers were slivers cut from the leftover white decal sheet. Those were very painstaking. The only sheets I could find to purchase had the wrong colors for the items on the roof, hood and front fenders and the quarterpanel chevrolet decals were also wrong. I guess whoever made the decals for those sheets used the museum car as their guide to what the colors should be. I found color pictures of the real car to make mine.

You did a great job. I did the Marshall Teague '56 a few years ago using Fred Cady decals:
Bob Ellis Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Why did these early NASCAR guys route the exhaust pipes through the tail lights, or trunk of the cars?
MarkJ Posted August 23, 2014 Author Posted August 23, 2014 Why did these early NASCAR guys route the exhaust pipes through the tail lights, or trunk of the cars? Beats me. It seems like it would be a lot of work routing them through there. Hosted on Fotki
Old Coyote Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Beautiful Mark ............ simply beautiful
rmvw guy Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Excellent!!! I always enjoy the early years of NASCAR history.
Jimmie Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Beautiful build. Is that built from the Herb Thomas kit ? It's really sweet. By the way the exhaust out the back was to send the heat from the exhaust out and into any car close behind thus causing their motor to run hot. NASCAR later outlawed that. Jimmie
MarkJ Posted October 6, 2014 Author Posted October 6, 2014 (edited) Jimmie, I did not know there was a Herb Thomas kit. I built mine from an amt 55 chevy bel air kit Edited October 6, 2014 by MarkJ
