unclescott58 Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Where is the mirror adjustment ? Look closely. The speedometer, fuel gauge, odometers, and warning lights are all reflected on a mirror on the Buick. There is a small thumb wheel next to it, allowing you to adjust the mirror to where you can see it better. How necessary the feature really is I can't say. But Buick offered the idea for two years. 1960 and 1961. Scott
Maindrian Pace Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Hard to beat the '58 Bonneville for bright and sassy without going off the deep end. '60-'61 Comet. Space age on a budget. I may be a bit biased on this one. -MJS

Pete J. Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) The title said best dash's not the prettiest or flashiest or most artful. This is the dash from my 1974 911. It is the absolute definition of function. No distractions, no bling, just pure drive. Next best thing to an aircraft cockpit IMHO. Edited April 15, 2015 by Pete J.
unclescott58 Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) The title said best dash's not the prettiest or flashiest or most artful. This is the dash from my 1974 911. It is the absolute definition of function. No distractions, no bling, just pure drive. Next best thing to an aircraft cockpit IMHO. For me the best dash board should also look good and be entertaining. This is the part of the car I'm going to look at most of time if I own and drive a car. The Porsche 911 has a great dashboard. No question about it. And, there are other dashboards out there that do not do as good of a job as passing on info like the 911s. But, are still pleasing. And sometimes to other people that may be in "the prettiest or flashiest or most artful." It's like pizza. To me it is almost the perfect food. Bread, meat, dairy, and vegetables all in one tasty package. But tacos also meet those same requirements. And I like tacos too. Just not as much as pizza. Or steak, shrimp, chicken, and on and on. It's still all okay. The Porsche 911 dash is both good looking and informative. It's just not my favorite. And I'm okay with the fact that it is your favorite. But, the rest of us can like other things too. That makes it neither right or wrong. It just keeps life interesting. Though you know your idiot if you don't agree with my choices. Pete J. Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) Scott, your spot on with your observations. I just threw it up because of the word "best" and that is a very subjective word. This may actually explain a little of why I prefer the 911 dash. It is a picture of my office for 10 years of my life. If you want to talk about entertaining, this is about as entertaining as it gets! Edited April 15, 2015 by Pete J.
W-409 Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I've always liked how '59-'60 Chevy dashboard looks, but especially now when my Impala is driveable and I've spent pretty much time behind the dash and steering wheel, I like it even more. This is my dashboard when we pulled the car out from the garage where it sat for five years.
Bob Ellis Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Sorry to say, but there is no style anymore. Functionality is the new norm.

And how about the first time you hit the highbeams at night and that bright red Bowtie lights up !
935k3 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I would like to sit behind this one out of Porsche's 919 Hybrid LMP1 car.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Triumph GT6! Classic British-looking dashpanel. Wood with airplane-style gauges, orange-y color contrasting with black vinyl.
W-409 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Turned out great Niko ! And how about the first time you hit the highbeams at night and that bright red Bowtie lights up ! Thanks! It's not the cleanest ever (Paint has some patina in it as it's original paint) but still it's very cool. And that red Bowtie is definitely one of the coolest features !
unclescott58 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I would like to sit behind this one out of Porsche's 919 Hybrid LMP1 car. For me the 919 dash shown above is too much and not very pretty. It takes more than a lot of stuff to give me entertainment and enjoyment in what I'm looking at. Part of what I love about the late 50's cars are the dashboard and fins. In either case neither may serve much function, but they are interesting to look at. Bob Spedding mentioned Chevy's high beam indicator shaped like their bow tie logo. I also like the Pontiac ones that are shaped like the profile of Chief Pontiac used in Pontiac's logos into the late 50's. I would who else did high beam, or other dash warning lights shaped like their logos? Scott
martinfan5 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Sorry to say, but there is no style anymore. Functionality is the new norm. And that is your opinion, and I disagree, there is just as much style today as there was in yesteryear.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 There's still style today, it's just different style.
Petetrucker07 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I really like the dash in the newer Kenworths. At night. during the day.

chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 That is a lot of gauges. Looks like a aircraft. What are they for? Oil temperature and pressure, air brakes, monitoring systems... a lot of stuff they have to monitor in a rig.
Lovefordgalaxie Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 For me, the very favorite is the Ford Maverick GT 1974 1974 Ford Maverick GT 302 V8 by Lovefordgalaxie, on Flickr
Petetrucker07 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 (edited) That is a lot of gauges. Looks like a aircraft. What are they for? Everything. Fuel level, air filter, fuel filter, oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, 1st drive axle temp, 2nd drive temp, trans temp, volts, amps, boost, brake application pressure, primary air pressure, secondary air pressure, tractor brake pressure, clock and suspension load gauge. Oh forgot speedo and tach. I think that's all of them. Edited April 18, 2015 by Petetrucker07
Sledsel Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 There are so many great dashboards out there, but there is one that deserves an honorable mention. One of the best of the 70's in my opinion. Full instrumentation could be had in any intermediate Ford/Mercury from 72-79.
