Sadly just shy of 300,000 miles my 1996 Tacoma was the victim of a driver who apparently didn't realize cars can't share the same space. A moment of silence please ... So shopping around for cars, I just couldn't take all the jelly bean cars out there these days. Enter my new daily driver, a 1985 Volvo 244, aka the Swedish Brick. A steel 1929 Model A Ford hot rod that I built myself after buying a frame for $5 when i was thirteen years old. Done way over 250,000 miles but the speedo wasn't the most reliable part of the car! 350 Chev, Turbo 400, 9inch rear, HK Holden front end. I built it myself and have driven it all over Australia including "across the paddock" five times (that's the lonely East West drive across the Nullabor plain for you overseas guys!) It's a 1973 Ford Maverick with the 250 c.i. inline 6 and a C4 automatic transmission Its probably been 20 years since I've seen a Maverick, and that one had been abandoned in a ditch for some time. Neat to see one still on the road. That stinks about the Toyota, but those Volvos are great cars. I have always wanted to pick one up. They don't seem to be just buy new tires every few years, change the oil now and then reliable like older Toyotas, but it is easy to work on and is built like a tank. 30 years old with 380,000 miles and it still feels like a new car. Tom Geiger Posted October 8, 2014 Share Posted October 8, 2014 I've had a VC Ute on my bucket list from the first moment I learned they existed! Someday maybe I'll find one and import it to the USA. It sure would make a stir at car shows here. I'm at the crossroads of evaluating my fleet and maybe upgrading. My 1996 Grand Caravan is in the shop having a transmission replaced at 195,000 miles. The 1999 Breeze my wife is driving has 155,000 on it and the air conditioning evaporator needs replacing so I've been adding gas to it all summer. One shop said that half the dash needs to come out to get to it and wanted $700 labor, so that's not happening. So I'm at that point of making the next automotive decision. I take it pretty serious since I keep cars a long time. I've been doing the math on buying something cheap new and buying something for less than $10k used. I still don't know what to do here! Might be interesting to see one of those reworked with some sort of longer than stock tube frame, big V-8 (maybe from a Titan pickup), reworked to look like a cross between a gasser and a 60's style show rod. Now after 5 years sitting in a garage unused, it's time to do some fixing for the next summer. It needs minor welding and some smaller fixes and of course some cleaning.
