Stone, Woods & Cook ’41 Willys - Revell Selected Subjects Program re-release

I picked up the Revell Selected Subjects Program re-release of the venerable Stone, Woods & Cook ’41 Willys and it makes me very happy. Willys gassers were my favourite drag cars back in the day and I have wanted to build both the SW&C and Mazmanian cars for a long time. For years I wanted one of the original SW&C kits but could never find one at swaps and I am not an Ebay guy. I was thinking of modifying one of the newer Revell Willys kits but never did. I finally bought a previously started molded in blue kit just two months ago but now I have one that has never been touched and is still bagged.

I was very pleased to open the box and see white styrene and surprisingly very little flash. There is a new set of decals, which includes blue decals for the interior and blower scoop, seat belts and white walls for the front tires. This was a very impressive kit when new with opening doors and trunk, pose able steering, separate chrome body trim, very detailed running gear and interior.

I am looking forward to building this model alongside the newer Revell Willys for a classic and modern modelling experience. About the only time I will likely change is to use the newer kits headlights.

The box art is much like the original issue but has a great looking newly built model on the box ends.

The original car still exists but without the distinctive custom front end. There has also been a very accurate replica of the Mazmanian car built and both cars have been featured in The Rodder’s Journal.

Got to get one, even though I have one of the '90s reissues still in a sealed box. But this has some neat stuff that one doesn't have because that one's a real reissue of the original.

But the pictures look like it's a gray plastic, not white, just the photo?

Definitely white plastic. Want to keep these parts in the bag until I get to it!!

I missed the last reissue, not going to miss this one. I have two builtups, one from the "Street Demons" release and one an actual SWC issue. neither is in SWC livery, so I need at least two.... one box-stock and one more street freak...

Always liked this kit when I was a kid in the late '60's. I think all of the" typical for the time" Revell fidgety/working parts kept me from ever finishing one. I guess the same goes for the '57 Nomad, '56 Bel Air, '55 Chevy, and ALL of the '20's '30's Fords. They did , however contribute a lot of parts that I would use WAY later.

The AMT '40 Willys was my favorite once I discovered it.

Built a few, plus one pickup.

Stopped building around '74. ( 16yrs old...pretty hot '56 Chevy Hard top that was BADD...and, Girls... :rolleyes: )

Later, around '81, I started building again. (Marriage) LOL!

Dragged out boxes of kits / parts from my Parents basement, and found enough parts to build 2 SW&C Revell Willys.

Something about that Olds engine made this kit more unique.

But, I just never liked the grill / cheesy headlights. On the post ' 81 builds, I filled in the grill...then shaped it like the AMT.

I then modified the headlight closer to the AMT version.

When the "new" Revell Willys came out, I bought severa(?) l. Haven't finished a one...yet.Several of the Gassers are still sealed. 1 or 2 have "contributed" parts for other builds.

I'll get to them someday.

As for this newest release? I will buy at least 3. Maybe more.

I believe I can handle those fidgety parts now.

You'd think with all the work they put into the decals, they'd at least TRY to get the license plates correct. Both have wrong fonts, the holes are off and the earlier plate doesn't even have the state name in the right place. So:

Copy, reduce (1/4" x 1/2" each) and print. The '56 plate will take a bit longer; hang on...

Out of curiosity, what is decal 16 on the sheet?

Instrument panel, I'd guess.

To me, this is another one of those great iconic Revell kits from the sixties that were too tough for me to build when I was ten, but that I had a great time building as an adult. Just remember, the design and tooling on this kit is fifty years old. Good to see it on the shelves again.

I had that kit when it orignally came out. (64?) Even my clumsy,little kid fingers could build a decent model from the box. The only thing I didn't like was the flat sheet of clear plastic that you had to cut for the windows.

Gene - As requested - instructions relating to transmission. I am by no means an Olds engine authority even though I drove across North America in 1962 in the backseat of my parents' '57 Olds Super 88; I assume all the first-gen Olds V-8's were of the same external dimensions.

It's intended to be the 394 cubic inch (factory displacement) Olds V8.

Though not shown above, another very cool feature of this kit's engine is that it includes a water pump, pulley, and fan belt, so that the engine with its supercharger can be used for models intended for street applications (hot rods, street gassers, et al.). Very few supercharged engines in 1/25th scale kits include the water pump/fan belt elements.

I just did some reading about the Olds 394, quite an engine, even stock.

My parents had a 1960 Super 88 SceniCoup that I had in my head (incorrectly) as having a 330 or something, guess what, 1960 Super 88's came standard with,......... a 394.

It's a 394, but I seem to recall reading that it had been bored and stroked out to at least 450 cubes, maybe a little more than that. I'm glad to see this kit return. While I like the new tool kit, the old opening doors one has always been one of my favorites. Have 2 of them sitting in my stash waiting their turns (one original paint, one to either do the dark blue or black version), plus the demons version I built back in the '80s. Might have to get a few more of them, they make great street rods.

Not a terribly common thing to see, but basically the magneto base bolted to a special bevel gear drive unit that the fuel pump also bolted to. In the case of the SWC Swindler II, it was needed because the stock 394 water pump and timing cover were retained. Most of the later gas class cars used aftermarket timing covers with the provision for driving the fuel pump and used Jabsco electric marine bilge pumps to circulate the coolant

Yes, same M&H slicks.  I've noticed in recent reissues they have both 11.00-16 and 8.20-15 (or whatever the narrower Revell slicks were) markings on the sidewall.  Fronts are the skinny Pirellis also found in the '31 sedan, Miss Deal etc.
