MCM Ohana (6/6)

  1. Remarkable detailing at every point. May I ask what paint(s) you used on those four "bottles" toward the front? The info may be useful for overflow containers in regular production cars.
  2. Looking to duplicate the shade of Tamiya's acrylic X7 red using their lacquer jar paints. I assumed they'd carry the numbers over for the sake of consistency, but LP7 is listed as Pure Red. Can anyone authoritatively tell me whether it's the same shade?
  3. Congrats on turning a disastrous situation into a great restoration. Kudos as well for achieving such a gorgeous finish. I tried that paint combo a number of times when I was younger but the transparent red always seemed to lean toward a darker pink for some reason. Note to self: check your paint supplies and try this again.
  4. Guess I’m naive enough that the idea of doing that never even entered my mind. OTOH, I occasionally see red paints on newer Audis and Mazdas that look spectacular.
  5. I love me some C3 Corvettes, had one for 20 years, but never saw one that caught my eye like this one. It just stands out among other reds. Wonder if any of the European paint makers offer something that could approximate that look.
  6. They offer somewhere around 10 different colors in their primer line, and this one is apparently meant to look like raw metal. Thought of getting some to use as a base for candy paints but wanted to see if anybody has used it and what they thought of it. I’d appreciate seeing any pics you have of your interactions with it.
  7. I haven't bought them, I was just sniffing around for model stuff on eBay when I came across them. TTBOMK, no kit manufacturer offers raised letter Cooper Cobra tires, so I was intrigued until I saw the sidewalls. If I decide I really need Cooper Cobras for a build, I can always get sidewall decals from Fireball Modelworks. My query here was just to find out if these could be easily salvaged.
  8. First, my intention is not to slam the vendor. I've never used anything that was 3D-printed, and these C3 Corvette wheels looked decent, but the "graininess" of the tire sidewalls gives me pause. What would make them presentable as realistic tires? I couldn't imagine trying to sand that out, especially around the letters. Light coats of primer?
  9. 'Bout time you started posting again. 😇 I was privileged to see this project take shape and was aware of some of the modifications required to create a more accurate build, so I hope others appreciate all the effort that went into it. The front axle placement, headlight lowering and alteration to the cab's overall shape were just a few of the changes that take this build miles out of the average OOB category. The headlights are an obvious upgrade from the kit units, and the amount of skill required to create the triangular markings out of decal material are beyond the abilities many of us possess. Hope you'll find the time to complete more of your projects and post them up for us.
  10. For those of you who either a) prefer acrylics or b) use them out of necessity, there's a new brand you may want to take a look at. If I understand this correctly, the makers of Gaahleri airbrushes are now offering their own line of acrylic paints under the name Kaleido. More info in this video: https://tinyurl.com/22896sd9
  11. Looking for a liquid mask that covers well and can handle lacquer paints if need be. Hoping there’s one particular brand that stands out from all others. I’d also appreciate pics of any work you’ve done using the brand you recommended. Don’t need any alternative masking methods at the moment.
  12. Thanks! I look forward to seeing any info you can provide on this.
  13. Very interesting project, love the creativity. Couldn't help but notice the belt/pulley detail, which instinct tells me is not OOB. Any chance you could elaborate on how you achieved this?
  14. Love that color. Personal opinion: Wish GM had offered that back then instead of a color that doesn't belong on any 'Vette - tan. Curious about the year you say your car represents as the front and rear end "caps" are from the '80-'82s. 1978, carried over virtually unchanged into 1979. My '80. This front & rear "cap" configuration was used through 1982. Nice job on the glass. The MPC's windshield is an extremely poor design and takes extra effort to be even remotely correct. MPC also ignored the top of the dash, skipping the speaker grilles altogether. The 1:1 t-tops are a great example of DEI engineering. They leak like a sieve and I never found a good fix for the problem. OTOH, like you, I liked the stock YJ8 aluminum wheels enough to keep them on for the 20 years I had the car. 99% sure you're correct that GM only put them on C3 Corvettes. Thanks for telling us about the Birdswing Copper. Hadn't heard of it but always like exploring options.
  15. Can you elaborate a little more on the product(s) and processes used to achieve this? I know a number of people (non-board members) who'd be elated to be able to do this kind of thing.
