Hobby Lobby vs Michaels

Really you may have to. There are more and more places that hit the email account as soon as you give it to them to make sure it is valid. I keep a separate email address just for this stuff. -
A really nice collection and all are beautifully built!

Great looking collection! How General Motors destroyed Oldsmobile is almost criminal.

How do you value a "kit bashed" kit?
Jim N replied to kobuzz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It really may depend on why you are placing a value on your model collection. Is it to place a value on your personal property so you can set the limit of coverage you are buying or are you purchasing coverage specific to the collection? If you are doing this to place a value on your personal property, you may want to value the partial kits at full retail value. You are over valuing them, but you do not want to under insure your things. If you are buying coverage specifically for the collection, you should be very realistic with what you have and value the partial kits accordingly. If you have a claim in this instance the last thing you want to have happen is a claims adjuster look in a box and see that much of what is supposed to be there is missing. Depending on what is damaged, they may not care that the engine is in a particular competed model or other parts are on different models. And proving conclusively that the parts that are not in the box, but are on completed models may be very difficult. Many states have fraud statutes and you do not want to get cross ways here as it can jeopardize the entire claim. If this is wonky, I apologize, but in a prior career, I used to be an insurance regulator. Insurance companies can be real prickly at times and you do not want to give them reason to question your claim. -
I remember those cars growing up. You did a great job!

I try and buy the model cases when I can. In the meantime, I store them in Gallon size Ziplock bags.

How does your family deal?
Jim N replied to Jeff31293's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My wife and I have been married for 31 years. When we were first married, she detested my building models and at a family gathering complained very bitterly to one of her relatives. The relative who was a female cousin asked my wife some questions. I was not a part of the conversation but was within earshot, and the course of the conversation was something I will never forget. Wife's cousin: Does his hobby keep him at home? Wife: Yes. Wife's cousin: He is not out drinking with his friends? Wife: No. Wife's cousin: He is not out chasing skirts? Wife: No. Wife's cousin: The cost of the hobby does not interfere with paying your bills or doing things you want to do? Wife: No. Wife's cousin: I really don't know what you are complaining about. Since that time, my wife really hasn't given me much grief as long as I don't send too much time working on the models. -
Cost is an issue; although, governments can take care of that through tax legislation if they want or have to. To me the biggest drawback is the time it takes to recharge the batteries. Until they can get the charging time to be comparable to refilling a gasoline or diesel car, people are not going to be interested. There is a lot of time to improve the technology, but we have been told battery powered cars are the future since the early part of the 20th century.

Using the "Purple Pond"
Jim N replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I read on another site a number of years ago that you really must use gloves with Super Clean, The thinking at the time was that there was a chemical in the Super Clean that will attack a person's liver. Whether this is correct or not, I will leave to each person to figure out. But I always use a thicker pair of gloves and would not trust nitrile gloves. I am not going to ruin my health over a hobby and I encourage others to use the same level of caution. As far as disposing this stuff, NEVER, EVER put it down the drain. While the Super Clean or Purple Power may be harmless, the paint is not. I put the stuff that I am not using anymore in its original container, label it and take it to the chemical disposal facility. -
