In the fall of 1980, Elliott gained his first major sponsor in the form of $500 from Harry Melling of Melling Racing in the 1980 National 500 at Charlotte. Melling would extend his contract and gave the team enough sponsorship to run a 12 race schedule in 1981. In the 1981 season, he had one Top 5 and seven Top 10 finishes in 13 races, including the team's first pole in the CRC Chemicals Rebel 500. He would lead 33 laps that season. Melling Racing Melling bought the team from Elliott's father George on December 1, 1981. (Wikipedia) I built this car along with all the other Bill Elliott Sqarebirds at the same time. I used Slixx decals and likely Testors paints and detailing with with brush paint and baremetal foil. The side numbers are too large, I discovered too late Slixx offered correct numbers on a separate sheet. Oh well, here it is.

I completely forgot he competed in NASCAR. I have so many NASCAR diecast myself. Soon I might be posting some pictures of my cars I have had in storage.

Thanks! What I usually do is photocopy the decals and then cut them carefully and use them as a template for making my masks. It works well most of the time. Also it turns out after a little studying, this is the car with the acetate windows. No window straps on the windshield gave it away.

To continue my collection of "Squarebird" 1980-82 Thunderbird body used by Bill Elliott in the early eighties. Bill was recognized as an up and comer in the 1982 season. He earned his second pole start and had eight top five finishes. Twice he finished second and he led over 150 laps that season. This is another of the group of three kits I purchased in a Legends kit which had Neil Bonnet and Benny Parsons on the box. The extra kit had everything but the glass. I think I used clear acetate as a substitute on one of them. I'll know once it's posted. Now that I've looked closer at the pictures, I can see it;s the one I posted yesterday. This one also has aftermarket decals from Slixx. The numbers on the sides are too large, I found out after I finished it you could get a group of numbers from Slixx that had the correct sized numbers for the sides. Painted with standard Testors red and white paints and detail painted. Tomorrow I'll post the 1981 version.

This is a 1980-82 Thunderbird body used by the Ford teams. Bill and several others continued to use them for the 1983 year on short tracks and the road course at Riverside because aero wasn't as important. It's a lot like his car that his first win came in at Riverside. It's not a road course car. I purchased a group of three kits in a Legends kit which had Neil Bonnet and Benny Parsons on the box. The extra kit had everything but the glass. I think I used clear acetate as a substitute on one of them. I'll know once it's posted. This one has aftermarket decals from Slixx. Painted with standard Testors red and white paints and detail painted.

Looks really Great!

Another build from years ago. Probably ten to twelve years, I can't remember. I built several of Bill's cars from the early eighties in a short period. This was part of the Rookies kit with Ken Schrader and Alan Kulwicki. I have the Schrader car somewhere too. Haven't run across it yet. I actually built the original Bill Elliott Melling kit in the early eighties, but repainted it into a Cale Yarborough Hardee's car. I haven't found that one either. Anyways, nothing special, just paint and I believe the decals are J n J. Don't remember much more. I'll be posting the others over the next few days.

I'm in the process of unearthing and taking pictures of all my built models and diecasts. I will post pictures when I have time. I built this in the early nineties. It used the Mark martin body and various other bits. A Days of Thunder Lumina for the chassis. Unbranded decals of the day. Some detailing bits and pieces. Painted with Tru-Match colors. This is my only attempt to detail a car beyond plug wires and maybe mesh screen. The areas on the front and hood where I filled with Squadron green putty have lost all their shine. Someone told me once, those puttys never finish curing! The hood is glued to the supports which have bowed in storage.

Looks great Gary!

I built this in the seventies when I was a kid. It only lasted for a day. My dad stomped it. 'nough said. I plan to get it and build it again.

When Carl Edwards was driving, he was my favorite driver. So I collected diecast and repainted and decaled a few that weren't available. This is one of them. It's from the second Nationwide (Xfinity) race at Richmond for the season which he won. Built about ten years ago, I used a 2006 Team Caliber Pit Stop (hood open, plastic chassis, super cheap at the time) #06 Todd Kluever (anyone remember him?) 3M Fusion. I probably gave ten dollars off of one of the auction sites. Stripped and repainted with god knows what paint I had at the time that was a close match. It looks like I used SMH decals which are still available. They worked well from what I can see. any ways more cars are coming as I unearth them from the crypt.

It took forever, but here are a few outside pictures. -
This is a diecast, but it's also NASCAR so I hope I'm posting in the correct forum. I refinished this ten plus years ago. I'm guessing not long after it debuted in 2008. I love throwback cars for Darlington. Especially when the number, sponsor, and manufacturer all come together. This was a good looking car when Fred Lorenzen drove the livery in the '60s and looked good on the 2008 Fusion Travis drove. I used a 2008 Team Caliber David Ragan #6 AAA car as a donor. Won it off the old GoMotorBids auction site for cheap. It's where I won a lot of NASCAR diecast to repaint. Not sure if it's Powerslide decals or another brand. I see both are available to this date. I completely stripped this one to bare metal. I have no memory of the paint or color, but if I had to guess I tried to match it to Wimbledon White. I remember the decals were really nice and easy to apply. I'm digging out all my old models, so more cars will be posted in the future.

I built this I guess around 20 years ago. The date on the box is 1999. I remember buying it at Hobby Lobby. You could build it with the headlights open or closed. It only needed a small amount of detail painting to complete. About the only thing negative I have to say about it is there are no lug nuts on the wheels. I also built the Daytona Charger. I'm unearthing my kits in storage. Once I come across it I'll post that one too.

Looks very sharp!

I have discovered my Nomad. It's little worse for wear. Been in storage for almost seven years. I built it soon after it was released, it's from the ProShop series. So it's pre-decorated. Box has a copyright date of 2002, so my guess is it was built 17-18 years ago. I only added paint to detail it and some foiling. You can tell the headlight bezels are smaller. I can't tell if they are the Lucas ones, or some other part. I know it came in the kit. Also it's apparent I was using epoxy for a lot of gluing and it has aged yellow. Hope this helps

Looks Great! I love the colors of the '50s!

I've been looking through some instructions from Drastic's Plastics and I think it might be the Lucas bezels with the center pin cut out and then using the stock lens. I'm going to be pulling out my model storage this week and when I run across my build I'll take a picture. The only picture I have is a side view and shows nothing.

Turned out great!

I'm no expert, but in the '60s almost all the cars were running full frames. When the mid-size Ford was included to run in 1966, I believe Bud Moore ran a Comet without a full frame for some of his cars. Soon thereafter NASCAR allowed him and the other Ford teams to use a Galaxie clip up front with the rest fabricated/welded to the existing unibody. https://www.hotrod.com/articles/up-close-with-the-1966-mercury-comet-nascar-race-car-of-darel-dieringer/

Totally agree! I substituted another couple of parts off the chrome tree and they worked perfectly. It's been too many years now and I don't remember if they were custom headlight bezels or what.
-
It's Release 75 and it's 1/24. Supposed to be an SS396, but the engine is a small block and according to the OP it has a 427 decal on it.

Well, that was different. Thanks Randy!
