What Happened To The Monogram 1/32 Snap Kits?
unclescott58 replied to oldcarfan's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I don’t how to make links to other postings here. But, if one goes to the next page here, you’ll find a thread here dealing with Atlantis reissuing Mongram’s old 1/32 scale funny cars. -
Last weekend I made my first visit to a Lego/brick store, Brickmania, in Northeast Minneapolis. They not only sell Lego bricks, but other brands as well. This is where I got my first exposure to the COBI brand of building bricks. Right away I saw these car kits by COBI, that actually looked somewhat like the cars they are suppose to represent when they are done. Plus they were much more reasonably priced than the Lego brand of building bricks vehicles and cars. Since I like odd cars, and one of the cars was a Citroen 2CV from the 1960’s, I had to buy it. Well I had so much fun building it, and I liked the end results, I ran back down to Brickmania today and picked up the other two Citroen 2CVs COBI makes. So here they. They are in 1/35th scale. And they represent a pretty good spread of the history of the Citroen 2CV. The Grey one is a first year of the 2CV. A 1949 2CV type A. The second one, the Blue one, is a 1962 2CV type AZ. The third, the Yellow and Black one, represents a 1980 2CV Charleston. They very are fun kits to build. They take about a half an hour to 45 minutes each to build. I like that they come with a brick/plaque you can set by each car, telling you what it is (the Fokker DR1 “Red Baron” I build last weekend, also comes with such a brick/plaque). In addition the same basic information is given on the front and back of each car, in the form of license plates and other badges. They make a couple Fiat 500 Abarths, both vintage and modern, I may have to pick up next. I like the COBI Citroen 2CVs that much.

I had so much fun, and liked the end results, of building my COBI Citroen 2CV Type AZ I got last weekend. That I had to go back to Brickmania and pick up COBI’s other two Citroen 2CVs. A Type A, and a Charleston. I hope. I’m sure, they’ll be as fun to build as the first one.

Thank you, Larry.

I hate the car. But, I love seeing your build of it. Good job.

Very nice.

I’m not really stressed over it. It’s just how long will this continue? Why not tell us so we can move on?

Rereading the the rules. I’m still not getting it? And I’ll be honest, I do not understand what the big deal is. I saw photo asking what this was. I knew what it was, so I answered it. I was not expecting a prize or anything. I did not do it to upset anybody. And I will not be participating in this game again in future, since I still do not get the rules. Again, I apologize.

I do want to make an amendment to my comment above. The only reason I’m not planning buying any of the kits put out this month, is not that kits aren’t interesting or good. But, I already have the ones that really interest me. The ‘49 and ‘56 Fords, ‘34 Ford truck, the Avanti, the ‘57 Chevy, Opel GT, and ‘68 El Camino are all great kits. But I have them, and I don’t need another. I am glad they are back out there, and available for others to enjoy.

About 46 hours after ordering it, I got my Diamond In The Rough kit delivered to my front porch. That was quick service both by the seller, and postal service. I’m pleased. Looking in the box, I’m also pleased with what I found inside. I really liked the damaged ‘40 Ford. Especially the broken and shot glass. And the bend bumpers. Very Kool! The kit also includes a real metal chain. I’m not sure what that’s for? I see nothing in the instructions indicating its use. Still it’s kool anyway. I love this kit. I’m surprised it’s only been released the one time. And that has been 36 years ago already! The ‘53 truck and the trailer look like pretty straight forward, standard releases of those two kits. Nothing special. But, good kits and always welcome to the collection. I’m also pleased to say, that despite the tires just being thrown in box loosely where they could damage other parts. Especially the glass, also in the box unprotected. There was no tire burn that I could see on anything!

Been thinking about picking this one up ever since Ertl issued it back in 1986 (36 years ago!?). Well, I finally got it. Ordered from a vendor on eBay Monday afternoon. Less than 48 later, the postal carrier has it on my front porch. Not bad.

Thanks Tim. I’ll be looking forward to that.

Great photos. But none showing the chassis. And so called movable parts. Still, a nice looking model from the photos.

The first one I built past in 1971 looked no where as good as this one does. The kits may not have changed much, but my modeling skills have thankfully. I too am a sucker for those old kits everybody else love to hate. So your not alone.
