Wow! Seeing Rex's collection above is impressive. And I thought I liked Ford GTs.

Revell instruction sheet up for the Gran Torino
unclescott58 replied to Mr mopar's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Other changes? The rear suspension is lower and the same size tires and wheels are used both front and rear. Also, the big one to me, it's molded in white plastic. And the decals are different. Beyond that, I can't think of much more. But, it's enough to get me to buy the kit. -
Oh, its worst than an old Revell kit. Still, it was meant to be built. Everybody should have built at least one Palmer kit in their life time. It's a right passage. You most do it.

Revell vs. AMT 1962 Corvette comparison?
unclescott58 replied to bbowser's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Thanks for the info Snake. I never did notice the problem before. -
That above is what I really want in 1/25th (or 1/24th) scale. Even that color. I'd like it to the options LHD, like the real ones imported into this country.

Not wanting to beat a dead horse. But. The Toyota USA Museum has in its collection a 2000GT with the steering wheel on the left. They also mention how many 2000GTs were officially imported into the US. I think they claim 54. So now more than ever, I want a model of a LHD Toyota 2000GT.

I really wish Round 2 would (or is that could?) reissue the MPC Toyota 2000GT kit.

My next modeling project... Maybe.
unclescott58 replied to kitbash1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nice car. The first car I can really remember my folks having as a little kid, was a '55 Olds 88 2-door sedan. They had a '50 Olds 2-door fastback when I was born. But, I really don't remember that one too well. Anyhow, nice car. I hope you buy it. -
Revell vs. AMT 1962 Corvette comparison?

Snake, this maybe a little off the subject of '62 Corvette models. But, what is wrong with Revell's '67 Corvette roadster? I always thought that it looked pretty good? -
Revell instruction sheet up for the Gran Torino
unclescott58 replied to Mr mopar's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Seeing others respond to my above comments in the last 48 hours, make me question if this kit going to sell or not. Did Revell make a mistake offering this version of the kit? Is this kit only popular and/or interesting because of its relationship with the TV show Starsky and Hutch? Am I the only one out there interested in kits of cars like this, mid-size cars from the post muscle car era? -
Revell vs. AMT 1962 Corvette comparison?
unclescott58 replied to bbowser's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Bill, you mention that AMT was good back in the day at producing accurate models, and use the AMT '49 Ford as an example. AMT's '49 Ford represents a 2-door coupe. Ford's 1949 2-door coupes did not have roll down rear quarter windows. The '49 2-door sedans did have roll down quarter windows. But, not the coupes. Yet AMT's '49 coupe has window cranks depicted for the rear seat passengers. Also looking at the instructions for AMT's original '62 Corvette shows that the kit came with chrome headlanp bezels. This maybe the reason they changed it on the later versions of the kit? There are other differences between the original AMT '62 Corvettes and later releases also. I'm not so sure that accuracy was all that good back in the old days. I can come up with many more examples on other kits from the time. -
Oh, and Wikipedia's web site on the Toyota 2000GT shows the dashboard of a left hand drive version.
-
Are you sure about that? According to the Standard Catalog of Imported Cars 1946-1990, Toyota built 337 2000GTs. With 53 being exported to the U.S. I also believe Shelby raced a few in this country, back in the late 1960's, for Toyota.

Come on! Open it up and build it. Being its a Palmer kit its probably a turd. But, if the price was right, have some fun. It's a piece of history. (A bad piece. True. But still.) Build it. And post the results. I had a few Palmer kits back in the day. They were all turds ?. But, I kind of miss them. Especially my '73 Thunderbird. It was bad. But, it was a '73 Thunderbird. And I love Thunderbirds. So, build yours.

Revell vs. AMT 1962 Corvette comparison?
unclescott58 replied to bbowser's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Despite my fond feelings towards AMT's old '62 Vette, I did break down and buy the newer Revell kit. Yes, it superior to the old AMT kit. And it will look nice sitting next to the AMT '62 when it's done. Still, the old AMT kit, other than the headlights, ain't too bad. And considering the '62 Vette had body colored headlamp rims, that feature on the AMT kit does look as bad to me, as it does to others. I guess I like both AMT's and Revell's '62 Corvettes. For different reasons. -
By the way, why is the Dodge Features Manual, Dart page of of wheels, wheel covers, and steering shown here? And not the correct Charger one? You can see the correct Charger page at the Hamtrack Registry web site.

A very nice build and a decent video review. Thank you for sharing it with us. The only thing I'm confused on is the history on the auto gyro that you give at the beginning of video #1. Is this the history of that particular auto gyro? Or the history in the Bond books? Or what? For you state that the Q branch invented the auto gyro in the late 1950's. But, gave credit to another for inventing it earlier. As I say, I'm a little confused by This statement. For the auto gyro was around at least as early as the mid 1930's, in real life, as far as I know. In fact, you can see one in use in the 1936 movie "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable. Still a nice build. And a very set of videos.

Being the car is HEMI car, didn't it require "15 wheels as an mandatory option? The W21 Rally Wheel would be more correct on this car. Were the wheel they are including in this kit, even available on '70 Chargers?
-
Maybe? But it's still interesting to me.

I may need to be careful, and not let the Baja HumBug and '53 Chevy not be passed up again too. But, the Jeep is my number 1 priority here.

Revell instruction sheet up for the Gran Torino
unclescott58 replied to Mr mopar's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Two days ago I got my non-Starsky and Hutch Revell '76 Torino. And I'm very happy with the changes made to this kit. They fixed just about everything I disliked about the Starsky and Hutch version. The only way they could have made it better, would have been to give us the optional bucket seat and console interior. And the 460 V8. But, I'll accept a bench seat car with a 351. The only other thing I see that's now incorrect on this kit, is the dual exhaust without catalytic converters. I believe all factory built '76 Torinos came with single exhaust, and a converter. Revell's mistake on this one minor thing, is not enough to make me unhappy with the kit. I'd like to see more mid-size car kits from this era. The 1977 through '79 Thunderbirds were really nothing but modified '72 through '76 Torinos. So I'm wondering how hard it would be for Revell to now tool up one of the those based off of their new '76 Torino? (In my case. Make it a '77 or '78. I hate the grille and taillights on the '79 T-bird.) Other mid-size cars from that era I'd like to see in kit? Any "stock" (read non-NASCAR) '73 - '77 GM A-body Colonnade coupe. In particular the '73 Chevelle SS, Pontiac GTO, Buick Gran Sport, and Olds 4-4-2. Another nice one would be a '75 - '79 Córdoba ( in particlar the '79 300), Charger, or Magnum. Why the above kits were not done back in the day, I'll never know? Hopefully Revell's '76 Torino will be a success, and we'll see more like them in the future.
