Revell Ed Roth 57 Bel Air - Suddenly It's 1963!
unclescott58 replied to Karl LaFong's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Mr. Bentley. Why do you welcome it back with open arms? When everybody else hates this kit. Is there something good there that others are missing? Since I've never built the kit, I can not say one way or another what is good and what is bad. I suspect from what I've read I will not be buying this kit anytime in the near or even far future. So again, why are you welcoming it back? Convince me this kit has some worth. Scott -
Revell Ed Roth 57 Bel Air - Suddenly It's 1963!

Tell us and show us more of the kit itself. How bad is it? People say that Revell's '56 Ford truck is bad too. I didn't find it too bad. Again, not as good as AMT's '53 Ford truck. But it was not so bad that couldn't build into a fairly decent looking truck. I understand how tough some of the old Revell kits could be to build. In general I avoided them back in the 1960's and 70's. I always found AMT, MPC, Jo-Han, and Monogram models cars easier to build, and much more satisfying when finished. But, I am a little better builder now than I was then. At the same time I still find some of Revells older kits, like their gassers, with their weak front axles and such not worth bothering with. Which is this? Is it more like Revell's gassers? Or more like Revell's '56 Ford truck and Hemi Hydro which I find both to be OK? In these reviews I'd like to see more of the kits themselves. And less on the opinions on whether a kit should have been reissued or not. There are several older kits that I may like that others do not for one reason or another. For example I still like AMT's '32 Fords kits. I like Revell's more modern tooled '32s better. But I still enjoy the old steel axle AMT kits. There things about AMT's '32 roadster I dislike. Like the firewall setup if your going to use the Hemi. I'd like to hear more about problems like that. More facts and less opinions. Note I say less opinions. Doesn't mean we need to stop giving our opinions. I just want to know more about the models themselves. Scott -
Nice to see. It looks good to me. I'd like to see more. Scott

Revell Ed Roth 57 Bel Air - Suddenly It's 1963!

Never have owned this kit. Did this originally come with rear quarter windows that retract? Or is that another kit? Carl mentioned a glass fitting problem on AMT's '57 also. Which AMT '57 are you talking about Carl? I've build their old 60's tooled kit with no problems that I remember. In the past I've also successfully built Revell's '56 Ford Pickup. Though not as good as AMT's '53, I thought it was OK. How does the the Roth '57 Chev compare to the '56 Ford? How bad is the fit of the windows. Can we see some photos? Scott -
Back to Revell's '58 Corvette. Other than the problems with the instructions, what else is wrong with this kit? I have not purchased this kit in the past. But, from what I've seen I will be purchasing it the future. What am I missing? How is this kit really? Scott

As noted by the others, very nicely done. Very sharp. Scott

Sean, like every car you build, this one is beautiful. Scott

Very nice. Reminds me of a '65 Impala SS a friend of mine had in the late 70's. Very close to same color. His real car had a 327 small block. Other than that yours looks close. Scott

Stunning! Very nice. The colors are prefect for the car. Scott

1950 Oldsmobile 88 California Highway Patrol

Never said I was brightest bulb in the bunch! Scott -
Thanks for photos Jim. Very nice job, as always. By the way, for Tom and others, Firebird does make the same decals for other soft drinks. And some not so soft drinks. So I hope this may inspire more people to build more Beer Wagons as something other than the Beer Wagon. It would be fun to see what others come up with. Scott

ยด56 Oval bug - Manfred Von Richthofens ride

Another great build Jarkko. I'm always impressed with your work. And your concepts. Erik Smith brought up the idea of the Baron cruising around with a surf board on the rack. But, wasn't sure were the Baron could surf? Wasn't he born and raised not far from the Batic Sea? I've never been there. Being that Finland is close by, I'm guessing you may have Jarkko. How are the waves on the Baltic? I think the Baron needs a surf board to go with his Beetle. By the way, I love swamp cooler in the passenger's window with the Germany sticker on the rear. A perfect 1950's accessory. Does anybody make these for model cars? Or does one have to scratch build one? Scott -
1950 Oldsmobile 88 California Highway Patrol
unclescott58 replied to tomsheehy's topic in Model Cars
Very nice Olds. I love police cars. Especially the ones used by the Highway Patrols. I am a little unclear on one thing about your build. Did CHP ever drive '50 Oldsmobiles? If not they should have. The Olds 88 was one of the fastest cars on the road at the time. I'm very much OK with building "phantom" cars if they look right. I'm not saying your Olds is a phantom. But, if it is, it's cool. I'm in the planning stages of building 5 Minnesota Highway Patrol cars. None of which will be 100% correct. I have had the decals made, so I'm almost ready to go. I plan doing Revell's '57 Ford Custom and '90 Mustang LX, AMT's '70 Galaxie, MPC's Rosco's Sheriffs Dodge, and JoHan's '68 Plymouth as MN Highway/State Patrol cars. The '57 will be incorrect because I'm going paint it like the '58 cars. 1958 was the first year the Minesota cars were paint Maroon. Which is still used to this day. The others? Minnesota drove '67 Plymouths and not '68s. '69 Fords, rather than '70s. Late 70's were Plymouth Furys, rather than Dodge Monacos. And Minnesota did run Mustangs, but they were unmarked cars. Were I'll be building mine as a marked car. None of the cars will be right. But, so what. Close enough. And I'll be happy. Scott -
Nice rescue of an old kit. Results are great. A modern update on the Bondinat Cobra. The Bondiant Cobra was convertible version of the Cougar II. I bet Bondinat himself would have liked it. Scott

Dual Batmobile Build - Dynamic Duo Duo (The Batcave CBP)
unclescott58 replied to Tony T's topic in Model Cars
Wow! Very nice job on both! In fact, I think it maybe the best job I've even seen on an old Aurora/Polar Lights 1/32 scale Batmobile. Scott -
I owned a '77 white Monte with a red Landau roof. My sister had a '79 Monte the same color as the '79 model shown here. At the time she had her's, I thought those third generation Montes were ugly. As time moves on, those '78 and '79 Monte Carlos don't look so bad any more. I was never a big fan of looks of second generation Monte either. Despite owning one. If I were to go for a second gen Monte, it would be its first year, 1973. The Monte I've always like from day one, were first generation. Especially the '70. Still I need to build a '77 someday. I have original promos of the '78 and '79. And I have the most recent kit AMT did several years ago of the 1970. Now if somebody would do a nice '73, I'd be happy. Scott

Hit the nail on the head with this one. It's simply beautiful. It also takes me back to my youth, when I mostly build my kits using the custom parts that came in the box. I remember building this one the same way. But, no where near as well as yours. Very nice. I like it. Scott
-
Both Barons are cool. But, I especially like your hood scoop on the modified one. Scott
-
Fred, I like the build, and I love the back story on why the modifications would have been done. Plus I love that you show Batman beating on Superman in the background. A fun build and a fun story to go with it. Scott

The Riv you built is very nice. Very clean. Rivieras look best left clean like yours, without a vinyl roof. Buick felt that way at the time too. Go back and look at their ads for this generation Riviera. Rarely will see one with a vinyl roof. The Dodge van looks great too. Except, is that a bench seat I see? With the engine location and dog house for such engine, that would not work without major modifications to the structure of the whole van. Other that, from the one picture it looks pretty good. Scott
