Here's what another guy (can-con) was doing for lights on his dodge trucks, using a clear resin called 'easy cast'. I've seen it at michaels.

1965 Mercury Comet Cyclone (update 1/4/19) Finished!
mk11 replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Great inspiration Steve. While Moebius did a fairly decent job of reworking the surface features of the adopted '66 comet chassis, they left the newer style tunnel (made for accommodating big blocks with C6 transmissions) alone. Like you say, it builds up just fine and few will notice the things a real Ford nut will want to tweak. Dave, the front subframe/suspension is a common design to all these cars based on the falcon platform and the amt '67 mustang chassis seems to have the best detailed parts. A builder can go either way and still have a good looking model with this kit. mike -
The amt '67 mustang and recent revell sbf's are a great source for engine parts and even the amt front suspension pieces can be adapted for poseable steering. If you're really motivated towards accuracy, think about using the more accurate shock towers from the monogram 65/66 mustang or even the trumpeter falcon engine bay. The 1:1 falcon/comet and mustang shock towers were pretty much the same size and the main reason they sit higher in the mustang engine bay is because the mustang structure was basically a sectioned falcon. mike

Moebius '65 Mercury Comet Cyclone news
mk11 replied to Dave Metzner's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
You're certainly correct regarding the trim levels, Dave, but I'm betting the chrome was added by the owner of that Caliente ragtop. Neither the ragtop nor the hardtop Caliente shown in my '65 Comet brochure show those pieces. The Cyclone pics are not drawn in a way to show them and there's no mention in the text. However, in my FoMoCo/Rotunda '65 collision parts guide, the trim drawings do show them only on the Cyclone. mike edit- I guess we know the brochures don't always tell the full story... found no Caliente hardtop pics with the extra chrome but a half dozen ragtops with it despite no reference in either the collision guide(printed may '65) or the brochure. Most important line in the brochure- "Ford Motor Company reserves the right to change specifications or designs at any time without notice..." -
Good trade with 72 Charger and good guy shout-out for Badluck 13 for parts offered straight up. Thanks! mike

X2 ! mike -
That's true and one can't blame a person if they choose that policy, I guess. If I have more than one item up at a time, I know there's always a chance of someone wanting a couple at once so I take advantage of the free box pile at the local supermarket to be flexible. Never hurts to think ahead. mike

1965 Mercury Comet Cyclone (update 1/4/19) Finished!
mk11 replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Sure looks good, Steve. On mine, I also shaved that inner ledge on the top of the rear window opening as it could be seen from outside. Just looking at another angle on the issue, note the light-catch along the roof ... ...notice the margin above the drip rail on the '64 Comet and Falcon... carefully blending the edge on the '65 into the roof crown, thereby dropping the margin and straightening the line, may make a noticeable improvement. mike -
Wow, that's good looking ...thanks for not using a black pen on the door lines... mike

My last order from may got here a couple of weeks ago. Pretty happy with my '58 Ford hardtop and '69 Torino cobra but kinda wish I'd picked up one of those '67 Pontiacs as well. Sure hope things work out for a well deserved rest upon their retirement. mike

What did you get rid off today?
mk11 replied to Junkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks Mark. I've had some kits here for forty years and others I'll never get rid of, but a lot of kits scored on the 'someday' principle end up moving on somewhere. Having the flow helps me keep up on trends and basic intel so I can sorta kinda keep up a semi-intelligent rapport on the forums Besides, I kinda agree with Garfield... mike -
1965 Mercury Comet Cyclone (update 1/4/19) Finished!
mk11 replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
It's easy, looking at Art's pic, to mistake the roof crown's curve for what is actually being discussed. The straighter line referred to by Steve is present, extending from the horizontal drip rail trim. The roofline is captured very well in Steve's pic... The original amt '64 comet and falcon seem a little more accurate. I guess criticism is, and will be inevitable when dealing with subjects that we can be emotionally linked to via nostalgia, etc . Definitely can be balanced more with thoughtful suggestions for work-arounds and improvements; though some things, as Bill and Steve note, create a longer road to accuracy. Thinking about that back window while prepping the body last night... what about laying a couple of strips along the bottom of the opening and carefully taking a corresponding amount off the top? (edit-never mind, not enough room) another edit regarding the chassis...further research shows moebius made pretty good effort to backdate details on the '66 chassis to match earlier falcon/comet floor and it's closer than the mustang floor would be. mike -
The two and four wheel drive parts from the amt Ford trucks will swap onto the frame with no problems... advantage being the metal axles that expand wheel choice greatly. Otherwise, you can look at the various projects involving these trucks and get more suspension ideas. mike

Got looking at my own pile of recent arrivals... time to go through the main stash again and send another box to big brothers or maybe even the troops mike -
I picked up a set of them a couple of years ago but don't remember the source. Love to find some 'Devil Woman' decals. I'll get a pic here in a bit... mike

1965 Comet 202 Sedan hobby bracket racer
mk11 replied to Reeves Racing's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
This sure is one mean little coupe Looks more aggressive and crisp with that sedan roof. The decision to 'adopt' the '66/67 fairlane/comet chassis and eng compartment style may have cut development time and probably won't matter to the majority of builders but it kind of throws a curveball at projects like this when you want to build it right. Just got back from a 'dig' to find some parts... '66 Comet chassis in middle, '67 Mustang parts on the right...good for a more detailed front end and various drivetrain stuff. <edit>Credit where credit is due dept...With some further research, it looks like the sweat invested by moebius on updates/backdates to the '66 chassis bring it closer to accurate than the mustang floorpan would be, but efforts to further detail front suspension will not be wasted The inner fenders and brace shown here are actually from the trumpeter falcon (credit the eagle eye of Chuck K for noticing this ) and are probably as close as you'll get in scale, other than the ones you're using. Who'd a thunk it? mike -
