Thank you all very much for the kind comments.

I would cleanup the back edge of the cab (like the leftover pieces of yellow plastic which may have come from the Willys panel van) so that it looks like it was cut from an original body. I would absolutely leave the paint as is. I would build a truck and trailer and load the body sections on the trailer as if they where being taken back to a hot rod shop to be used in a restore or a cool new future project. Maybe make at beat-up flathead engine, maybe some wheels or some other parts and put it in the bed of the truck as if the '40 was a field find. Your tow vehicle could be a resto-moded '40 Ford pickup or something else cool.

Here it is! I was hoping for something a bit more spectacular however. http://en.espnf1.com/williams/motorsport/story/147955.html

Well I’ve been struggling with creating a set of headers. After burning through almost FIVE FEET(!) of .060 rod and 2 evening works I came up with the set on the right. Decent, but I just wasn’t feeling it. I took a break for a day or two, did some thinking and more research and in my first attempt came up with the set on the left. I am much happier with this set. I still need to make a collector that will cover the ends of the shorter pipes The long center pipe will be the single pipe coming out of the collector and connecting to the muffler. Pay no attention to the junk engine block they are currently installed on, I didn't want to work with my finished engine and risk any damage to it.

Are rally drivers the best in the world?
afx replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nine (NINE!) consecutive WRC titles, yea Loeb was dominant. The only reason he won't win more is he semi-retired from rally. And what does he do in his first year of retirement? He smash the Pikes Peak Hill Climb record by a minute and a half in his first attempt. He has competed in Le Mans but no victories - yet. -
No thanks Rex. I have to wear an opti-visor with a magnifying loupe now for 1/24 scale. I would be lucky to get all four wheel mounted in 1/87 scale.

Here is the HRM kit. It's not too hard to see why it cost a little more. If Model Factory Hiro made this kit who knows what they would charge for it.
-
Casey, I know little to nothing about trucks and I'm not sure if it would be appropriate but if you are looking for a nice 289, Monogram's Mustang GT350 (all versions) have a really nice engine and being 1/24 scale it might help fill-up the engine bay. That's the engine I like to use in AMT's Cobra.

Historic Racing Miniatures has a very nice resin kit. At $175 I wouldn't call it cheap but it is a complete kit; body, chassis, suspension, engine, everything. It builds into a beautiful model.

Better Shelby Side Exhaust?
afx replied to bigbluesd's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I use a tubing cutter you can get from the hardware store or my razor saw. -
Better Shelby Side Exhaust?
afx replied to bigbluesd's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
They make a bending kit that is a tightly coiled spring. You select the size spring that fits the tube and slide it on where you want to bend the tube. The spring keeps the tube from kinking. It works but depending on how thigh the bend is its difficult to remove the tube from the spring. You can also fill the aluminum tube with salt not completely but almost full. When the tube bends the salt inside keeps the tube from collapsing, then just pour it out when your finished. -

Aluminum tubing works well and is especially nice if you need and unpainted metal finish. I also like to use solid styrene rod. Solid rod wont collapse when you bend it. I bend it to shape and then hold it over a candle to remove the stress from the plastic and to set the shape. Then drill out the ends to make it appear hollow, -
Excellent.

Thanks Bill. Yep no clear here. The rims are actually the kit finish and are a bit to shiny IMO. My next build I might strip them (gasp) and paint them a flatter finish.
-
That is correct Gene, a curbside kit has no engine. The photo of the engine kit is for a future project. This car ran a big block 7 liter (427) engine while the engine kit is the 5 liter (289) small block appropriate for the GT40 or MkI if you prefer.

Thanks Marcos. I better hurry up and build my next one, I don't want to be embarrassed setting my next to yours.

There are a few vendors on ebay (jimheller and msmightymouse) that seem to have and endless supply of Cady decals. Haven't seen them list the '66 Le Man sheet however.
-
Nearly completed chassis, only missing the exhaust. Scratch built battery tray with battery from the Fujimi kit Scratch built oil fill tube and oil filter
-
Thanks Bill. Fred Cady did a decal set for the '66 Le Mans car. Pretty sure he did a couple different GT40 sheets.

Curious on what I have here
afx replied to fun9c1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The drag boat is AMT. If you would care to trade it please send me a PM. -
Mike additional details: drilled out seat rivets all 252 of them added silver fern decal from the Cady sheet to the drivers side fender opened the grill up and added mesh screen plumbed the radiator, should have a spare tire in there per the rules at the time but I didn't want to sacrifice another kit's wheel added pull handle to the driver side door. However I don't think this is correct for the Le Mans cars. It is correct for '66 Daytona cars.

Beautiful build Dave, are the stripes decals or paint?

Are rally drivers the best in the world?
afx replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
During it most extreme era what is known as the Group B era Rally cars were insanely fast and powerful. It was only after several drivers and spectators were killed in a series of accidents that they stepped back from the edge and outlawed these cars.
