AMT's 55 Corvette Gasser Done pictures
Johnt671 replied to Johnt671's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
No problem. I'm just setting it aside for a but and work on something else while I try to fix the body up. It's in progress now but will take a while if it's going to work. If it won't get better than it is I'll build it the way it is. I was getting close to painting the body, and I'm glad that you pointed the issue out before I painted it. -

I just checked an AMT 53 Corvette that I just made, and it's warped the same way. It looks like you're right. -

I bought the B&M shifters from them, and was happy with them. -

This one will be set aside until I see if I can make the body better or buy another kit just for the body. -

You're right. I didn't look at both sides , and I now see from looking at the rear end view that the tail light on the drivers side is lower. I'll have to see what I can do about this.. I was able to fix a badly warped pick up frame, so I'll see what I can do. Thanks for pointing it out. -

Thanks Sledsel. This will be the final stance and wheels. Since this will be an early 60's type car, it will be powered by a fuel injected 409. Anybody know what class this would be in? -
I grew up and north New Jersey, and I did a lot of buying at Western Auto. We had a Pep Boys in the area but it was in a bad town so we never went there. There is still a Pep Boys in Wilkes Barre I think, I haven't been you that way for a while. That also had to be good days for good old J.C. Whitney. I remember them being so slow to send anything out but I still bought from them.

I just finished a 53 Vette stocker, and liked it so much that I wanted to do a gasser version. I went to the 55 because it already had some drag parts in the kit. I'm going for an early 60's look some what along the 53 Vette gasser Tijuana Taxi. There are videos of this car on youtube if you want to check it out. I was working on a 33 Willys gasser and found the chassis was a nice fit. I found some of a tube front axle in my parts box and added it to the stock chassis of the Vette and used the kit rear suspension because I wouldn't be able to pull off using the Willy' parts.

Left over builds are cool. I like it, nice work.

It is a nice kit, and has a lot of possibilities to do different versiond.

What you are saying here is exactly what I going for on this one. I shouldn't have called it a rat rod but a ratty looking car slowly being fixed up. Thanks for your post. Wow, I forgot about Earl Scheib who would paint any car for $29.99. But that was a lot back in those days, and the last thing done to a rod. Motor first, at least two nice wheels for the front then improve the interior.

Thanks for checking it out.

The Willys interior is holding the body up higher, but the Corvette interior will lower it down. I think I have enough skill to make this work out.
-
Almost done. I had to order another kit kit just to get the front wheel I needed, but then I made a neat discovery as I was playing around with a 55 Corvette gasser I'll be doing soon. I thought that I could use some of the Willys parts on the Corvette, but little did I know....

Thank you.

Thanks. I used a little tacky glue to hold the doors fully shut A small tab along with tacky glue may have worked better as I at first used too much and the first time I went to open a door I had to pull hard. This pulled one of the door hinges off, but with some good luck nothing broke so I was able to reattach the hinge and clean up some of the glue. It turned out so nice that I wish I'd raided my spare parts to spice I the interior more. Maybe an upgrade in the future.

Thanks. This is other than the interior, an nicely details kit. In addition to the opening doors and rear gate the hood was hinged, both on the top parts that I used came that way. the sides of the hood were also hinged, ans I planned on doing the hood that way but I broke the little pins off of the lower piece and had to change the way I did this one. Thanks to slusher also.

A day late and a dollar short but I have the done pictures. I'll post a teaser pic here, and the rest under glass. Thanks to all who commented on this build and for the many lookers. It always makes things go when people are interested in a build.

Decals started, and I'm trying to get a few pictures of the interior because they'll be hard to see when she's done.
