Model Building Stereotypes
tbill replied to MustangGuy23's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
i march to the beat of my own drum, not real interested if someone doesn't like what i do on my own time. having said that, most people that find out i build, often comment that they did it as a kid, then when they see what i have built they think it's cool. -
well, If it were possible, it'd be nice to see the whole Navistar line up would love to see a return of an IH coe in any form. and trailers, I agree with everyone else.....lol, anything else modern would be a welcome product. you guys are making great kits that are a joy to build, keep up the great work, looking forward to new releases.

Terry, yes, I plan to use the tank from the trailer kit. I've been thinking about some sort of rack too, but not sure where I will end up with that. Dennis, thanks. some of these grills are tough for me to try to detail, but this one has nice crisp molding in the 'mesh' area, so the black wash worked pretty good on it. Pavel, thank you. I was worried about my color choices, but it seems to have worked out -

from what I have seen around the 'net', these things are really expensive, or have I just been looking in the wrong places? would love to build one. am familiar with r/c, maybe I just need to gut my losi mini t and stuff the electronics in an amt or revell rig -

KJ, good thinking on the stripe color first, that does sound like it would be a lot easier, and way less masking Anthony, love that truck! -

I don't sand between coats, unless I get a bunch of dust/junk in the paint. I usually let the actual base color dry/cure pretty good, otherwise you get tape residue [then ya gotta wet sand] when you un mask. I usually get in a hurry and just let the first coat of clear tack up for 20 minutes, then shoot my second color, if it covers well, i'll unmask it in 20-30 minutes and let it cure from there. I should wait longer though, as sometimes when I peel the tape off, the top coat and clear are a bit 'stringy' and will sometimes cause some of the paint line to not be crisp. best bet is to experiment on a body and get the 'feel' for it. took me a few tries to get where I can repeat the process without catastrophic failure, lol. -

nothing to it really. paint the white first, paint the whole body. let that dry/cure. after it's cured, mask off the white parts you want to keep, and clear coat the whole thing, let that dry, but not completely cure, then paint the dark color, let that dry for a day or so, then un mask it. after that is fully dry/cured, mask off the area you want stripes, clear it again, let that dry a day or so, then paint the red, let it dry a bit, then un mask. when fully dry, clear it again, and you're done. I do my two tones this way. I also use lacquer paint, dry times will be longer for enamel. if nothing else, try it out on something else, worst case, it goes into the pond to strip the paint. the clear coats help keep the colors from bleeding thru into one another. here are a few examples, give it a try, you'll be glad you did. -

thank you Jeff, I just try to do the best I can. I finally got one of those new ray excavators the other day, so, just for kicks, I tossed it onto a trailer I built awhile ago, and 'hooked' it to the in progress road boss to see how it all looked. plans are to detail the excavator [eventually], and ultimately the trailer will be hooked to the DAF 'cattleman' truck [again, when I get around to that one], so anyway, here's a look, hope to make progress on the truck this weekend if yard work doesn't get in the way.... -
