“A-Steel” - 1930 Ford Coupe – chopped & channelled
JTalmage replied to Phildaupho's topic in Model Cars
I would LOVE to see more pictures of this car. I've got about a half dozen of these unbuilt 30's that I've been collecting. I want to do chopped channeled hot rods out of them but just dont know where to start... got any pictures of the underside? -
No. Maybe it has 3/4 ton suspension under it for a big cross country fuel cell?

I almost forgot about the old art of Torch welding with an oxy-acetylene... Did that too in shop. That was cool.

I wish I could see the pictures at work.... Will have to check this out later. I know a guy that has done 2 SN95 Chassis under 65-66 body swaps about an hour and a half from me. Right in his little 1 car garage and in the driveway. Freaking cool BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH. I remember one of them has a supercharged blow-thru Clevor motor, viper 6 spd, and a cobra IRS in the back.

Finally snapped a pic of them. Boxes arent in great shape, but the kits are complete.

Thats quite OK! I actually have quite a few Mopar kits stashed away! I do have a secret love for Mopars. I just realized as a 17yr old kid (at the time) that Mopars were WAY out of my price range/cost of living/budget. And that Foxbody mustangs sounded soo much more enticing (cheaper!) Amongst my Fords I had a '74 Plymouth Scamp... Best lawn ornament I ever owned! LOL But alas.... the real 1:1 Fords will be taking up most of my time this winter. Rust repair on a '98 F150 (both rockers and cab corners... not my truck) Reassembling my '93 Lincoln Mark VIII (not so stock anymore ) Making my '88 Mustang street/strip car actually resemble a car instead of a pile of sheet metal on wheels Very little building will probably happen for me in the plastic world

I'd love to learn to TIG. I've watched a few videos on youtube that make me feel like I could do it. My friend's dad has a TIG... might have to see if I can cut my teeth on it.

Maybe it started life as a government service truck and was sold after it fulfilled its use? -
I lucked out and was the first, and unfortunately one of the last classes in my high school to have a machining/welding class. I did pretty well in machining and really enjoyed it... sucks I missed about a month of it for getting in-school suspension LOL I could set the lathe up pretty quickly and find my center w/ the tool I was using, and cut a piece to rough shape then go to to the final piece I wanted pretty quickly w/o much measuring. I just always knew what I wanted it to look when done. Even if it was two pieces that needed to fit together. Not sure if I was just that good, or ignorant. haha... Then, since that class was only a half year, I spent the rest of the year in the welding side of things. Loved that. Hated stick welding though. This was also before auto-darkening hoods were big, or possibly even available. I'd probably be just ok at it now with an auto darkening hood. I took to MIG welding like a fish in water. That's been my strong point. I'm no professional but I'd think I would do well in a test. I'd like to get my welding cert. Just in case. I've done soo many repairs/modifications/customizing to cars/trucks/lawn mowers, and even making halloween props all because I learned how to weld. Welding has become one of the most commonly used things in my life lately as far as projects go. Yay rust belt. But it does suck that schools are slowly phasing that stuff out now. Nothing like a bunch of socially awkward, skill-less young adults... oh.. wait...

I'm having bad thoughts about a woody wagon on a bronco frame right now..... Might have to pick those up soon.

If I really like the box art and the model, I'll use a sharp knife and just cut the bottom plastic off of the box. So the top and sides still have a perfect cover. But I dont have a ton of room to store boxes so typically they get trashed. Thinking about cutting the tops off and holding on to them or something. But normally if I buy a sealed kit.... it gets opened. I've bought several old monogram 30 Model A's off ebay still in the shrink wrap... those suckers get opened as soon as I get my hands on em.

Thats my problem. Between working overtime for a project at work during the week and not getting home until 10 sometimes... then getting up at 5:30... and working on rust repair on a full size F150 during the weekends... no time... sucks...

AMT '49 Ford Customized Coupe the hard way - Update 10-1
JTalmage replied to Bernard Kron's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Love the work going into this! I too know about "flat spots" I've had no time to even touch a plastic kit let alone think about em. By the way if you havent figured it out yet I've solved the mystery of the strange tab that was hanging down on the roof section that you were sent! I bought a '49 on ebay, and that tab that sticks down is also on that kit. It is used with a strangely shaped little metal clip that also attaches to a tab off the back of the hood. It allows the hood to "snap" shut after opening it, and to stay shut when you turn the model upside down. I'll have to get a pic of that when I get some time. -
I kinda like that last one. Neat take on the "overchopped" rods

I wish I had time to build something to take the General Mayhem's place. I don't even have time to think let alone build anymore.
