  1. thats why its often referred to as harbor fraud. typically youre lucky if what you buy there lasts for one iteration of the job you bought it for. on the other hand some of their stuff works. its kinda a crapshoot. edit: oh so you never got the mill, just promises? maybe count yourself lucky. dont try to save a few bucks, get a good piece but yeah youre right, often stuff is sold under different names for different prices. for instance i bought a compressor for inflating tires after deflating them for off road travel. if you bought this compressor at a 4wd store it was like 250$. then someone told me there was an identical one at pep boys for under 60. i was skeptical but yep it was exactly alike with same accessories except it didnt have a pan to set under it to keep dirt off it on the trail. i bought one and have been using it successfully for years. in this case it did pay to look for cheap.
  2. i think of course you can bring it back. there are so many nebulous factors in a contest (mainly judging and judges related) plus it could be it will be better than anything else on the table the second etc time. i also agree if you win, dont bring it back to enter again but you could certainly bring it to display and maybe get peoples or celebritys choice or something. horses enter a race more than once, even after winning, so why not. a more pertinent question might be if you brought a car and placed third say, then took it home and made significant improvements to it, should you be able to enter it again? i would lobby for yes on that question as well. but at some point youre either gonna be accused of being a trophy hound or run out of space for the plaques and trophies, or the wife is gonna get bugged at dusting them all the time.
  3. thanks! i just got some of those tuner manufactory lug nuts myself.
  4. ah so the "merc" you mentioned actually is a Mercury? sorry bout that then...
  5. nice color! one thing ive noticed with my friends over in europe, when they say "Merc" they mean Mercedes Benz (known here, by me anyway, as a Benz) but over here a "Merc" refers to a Mercury, usually a 49/50 leadsled sort of car. just thought you might like to know to cut down on confusion.
  6. nice tiger! where did you get those minilite wheels? they arent in the kit are they? kinda look like the ones from the esci "crystal" ford escort. i bought a bunch of those kits one time on sale for like 3$ each but ive stolen all the wheels over the years...would like to get more.
  7. yeah those would be some quickly melted ignition wires the way they are run over the header! as it is, i have the exact setup in my toyota land cruiser (350 chevy with ram horn exhaust manifolds) and i have to be super protective of the spark plug wires or they melt from the heat of the manifold. i have hi temp wires, and plug covers plus abestos sleeves on the plugs and wires where they pass near the manifild. they still melt and cause engine miss every 40k miles or so... and i think your painting of the script on the valve covers looks better than using decals. good work there!
  8. no i didnt as i mentioned in the post. my mistake, but ive never washed bodies before painting unless ive done body work on them. that will change now. and again the power of photos, i see a few improvements starting with routing, again, the right side fuel pipe so it looks more natural. oh and the tach is over on its side for a reason...red line straight up. my punch slipped a bit when cutting the tach out so its kinda trimmed poorly. i may dig another decal out of my other copies of the 356 to remedy that although i doubt it will show once inside the interior. thanks again for looking and any comments welcome!
  9. alright a quick update: ive been working on the interior but dont have photos yet other than the narrowed and trimmed 356 dashboard, but porsche seats etc are being prepped and painted, motor is almost done, some work begun on the body (should be a cool breeze but you know how that goes ). wheels are next up for some detailing and setting the actual track width (oob seems way too narrow, i like it more aggressive with wider track). thanks again for looking! some shots of motor, still needs twin coils installed and wired other than that its about done. and a few from the bottom with the exhaust system fitted. im using the stock (but Carrera) system but have made larger exhaust pipes from aluminum tubing...they will be trimmed off to fit after body is fitted. here is the Porsche 356B dash that i narrowed to fit the ghia interior, it was a near fit right from the box: finally, not all is rosy. i had some kind of strange paint reaction when spraying body color on inside of body shell. i had NOT washed body and thats probably the problem. so this ugly mess occurred when i pulled the masking tape i used to mask off for the interior color. bummer. but i think a good sanding and a partial reshoot will suffice. i sure am going to be particularly careful with the outside after this happening...prep city for sure! its kinda funny (well, not FUNNY funny...) the paint just did not adhere at all to portions of the plastic. its tamiya black and it just kind of peeled off there...stuck together like no getout but not at all to the body in spots as you can see. ive never had anything like that happen to me before.
  10. ok back from the dead as it were, the jaguar has had its paint applied, front flares painted (i forgot when i was masking ), doesnt look great but ok for now...still need to do a color sand to blend the ridges and a coat of clear then the decals...but the rest of the components are done and waiting for good weather to lay on the clear! components await the call: this one will hopefully be done by the anniversary of my first post in this thread... but i aint betting the pink slip on that.
  11. if detailer is peeling off it means its on way too heavy, in my experience anyway. lighter is better with detailer. i usually slop it on and then, while its still wet, remove most of it by wicking it off with a bit of paper towel, then let the rest dry up. then esp if its on chrome i lightly rub the high points with a damp q-tip and it looks great.
  12. wow that is uber kool! where did you get the chassis, or did you cut it out of sheet? really great job on rear suspension and gear. looks super!
  13. but it didnt include a collectible tin!
  14. thanks mark but what i really want is a couple cans of the original with roths name on it for ambience! good to know they still got the shades around. now if only someone issued the proper AMT spray colors to do the King T and Wild Dream!
  15. yeah i use it all the time, basically like you say black gives a good effect to grilles but also to engines or anything to bring out the detail. i put it on chrome wheels and then wipe off most of the surface leaving it in the cracks and crevices to accentuate them. other colors can be used to do the same sort of thing on different base colors or can be used to sort of "anodize" chrome parts. i use the blue to create "bluing" of exhaust systems. sometimes its a fine line but the beauty of it is if its on too heavy you can just rinse it off and reapply it. and unlike thinned paint it wont attack the surface below it, for instance other paint or clear. i usually keep black, red and blue handy but 90% of the time its black that i use.
  16. i would love to have some of that roth spray paint!
  17. at least your current one gives you something nice to look at past the barrel! thanks!
  18. you know, and i know this is off topic so i beg your forgiveness for that, but that graphic of homer simpson sighting down his gun barrel just isnt doing it for me. a little too creepy. just wanted to say that. no need to change it, but its just scary. carry on...
  19. its pretty incredible those tires and wheels took that abuse!
  20. wasnt this, the body and accessories anyway, recently reissued by AMT?
  21. and the madness continues:
  22. huh. i didnt get that little rachet piece with mine. would have made things easier and work better than the arrangement i made up. maybe next time. speaking of next time, are the jackstands available separate from the motor stand? i will buy another set if so...the ones i got were comped to me when i bought the Offy motor so maybe i got preproduction copies without the racheting device. they sure look and work good. thanks again for making accessories like this available.
  23. i always hoped they would fall out the door and the dumb car would run over them. but maybe its just me.
  24. for something different, maybe a lincoln V12? or a buick/rover/MG?
