User Questions About Krylon, Etc
jbwelda replied to Bruce Poage's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
i think i agree with spyder, spray can (nozzle, really) spits out way too much way too fast. the other thing is you have to watch out that the plastic doesnt react to it, especially if you hit it with too much paint. some plastic is delicate and will craze and make you at least have to strip the paint. and i a case or two with me, then plastic was then wrinkled and required a good sanding or just scrapping it and moving on. i think the paint itself is excellent though, good color selection and lots of "effects" sort of textures. -
1/8 Pontiac Firebird Turbo Trans-Am

i didnt even realize this kit existed! that motor looks like it might be at home in a 32 with some dressing up! sweet looking build going there, and even better because youre bringing it back from glue bomb heaven! -
turned out very nice and strong enough to support a 1/8 scale car. had to get them dirty because ive never seen a clean jack stand unless they were on the shelf at harbor (fraud) freight. pretty easy once pieces cleaned up but did have to design a racheting mechanism out of some channel plastic and wire, painted red with a sharpie so quick and ready to go! in action on front of lindberg rat rod: and some closer shots: i have to get a few more sets of these for in progress frame stands etc. look great and work great too! they are a bit delicate for the cleanup process but nothing insurmountable. i did crack one of the upper portions but it just looks like it is typical "made in china" quality and besides its hot rod style and who is afraid of a cracked jack stand? not hot rodders thats for sure! i have to recommend these as fairly inexpensive display accessories for 1/8 scale cars/

>30min card is $30 you can get 120 minute plus 60 bonus for 30$ at their website. -
edit: oops just noticed its a F100 not a F150 pickup the kart came in! no wonder my ebay searches never turn anything up! i thought this (the kart and cycle) article was the best i have seen in Model Cars in many years. the article was full of interesting history, like i didnt know the kart and bike were available scattered over a number of kits. i dont remember that anyway, but i would have been bugged to the max to just get a couple little parts per kit! and i had forgotten the triumph had been included in a chevy truck kit similar to the ford/kart combo. gives me another kit to dream about on ebay! and even though i have read the article twice now, just thinking about it makes me want to read it again. great photos too, brings back memories! i have a fondness for the two vehicles and was just thinking the other day (before seeing the article) that AMT ought to reissue that Ford F150 pickup with or without the bonus kart (of course would prefer the kart too but as the article points out it is available from RMM in resin). i have been looking for an F150 for a long time to complete my set but they are too expensive when available, even without the kart. it would be an excellent release and if the molds are still around (i guess the concensus must be they are not?) i would love to see AMT release the motorcycle and the kart in a parts-pack sort of kit! heres a RMM kart i built; ive still not built the triumph:

Now for something completely different….

>my eyes aren't good enough any more. tell me about it. i am coming to that sad realization myself. on the positive side, i dont so easily see all the details that are missing! -
this is the artwork that was on the kit when i originally bought it back in the early sixties: i was kind of expecting that art on the tin too. from what i understand this issue will not have the extra parts or decals and in fact may be missing parts from the original release (not to mention likely have the reissue wheels as discussed above). probably the blueprinter release back in a colorful box, that would be my not-connected-to-anyone-important guess. so for me its a no-brainer, a few more bucks but nice extras and a cool tin to put paint in or something.

keep in mind "british racing green" is not a colour, but a description. typically it was whatever green was on the shelf as long as it was that forest green kind of hue. not even close on different panels of the same car sometimes. (that was before body proper was restored and repainted a consistent brg sort of colour...here some panels are metallic, some gloss, some flat, thanks largely to mother nature). another thing to remember is it was never a metallic. that eliminates the testors british green i think its called. what i always found matched what i considered brg is the tamiya british green i think it is and also krylon forest green. i think it will look best in brg but i am also partial to black. -
oh yeah i remember those hso releases with the photo etch now. i was thinking of the original johan issues. johan seemed to get the bodies very nice, but the rest was always kinda sketchy in my book. but that was back in the sixties.

>because I am lazy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow. that is incredible. incredible. your last photos there needed img tags: The first counter-balance shaft casing and the engine. After making the second counter-balance-shaft casing I soldered it together: simply incredible.

ok i gotcha, thanks for that. its nice to not have to go through an intermediate host. its really a great feature so i was wondering if i was the only one who didnt know about it. thanks again!

ok not sure i get it still but i will look into it and if it continues to be unclear i will pursue a further explanation. thanks!

ok lets talk specifics: for instance the "rants and raves" section is supposed to be about the hobby, not each other. yet a lot of stuff there either begins or devolves into back and forth not about the hobby but about people. another example: not too long ago gregg or someone posted there would be no profanity or even allusions to profanity, yet i see "wtf" (would you like a translation) or my own example "bs" above with nary a complaint. so which is it? another example: why isnt there some sort of moderation done to ask people to post topics in the proper category? for instance i can think of few reasons to post a build or project in the "general" category...in fact there should be precious few postings in that category though of course some fit. i used to be all for "the less moderation the better" but more and more i think a moderator is necessary, not to keep people in line but to keep postings in proper categories even if it means moving them and replacing the original post with a "please post in proper category" message and moving the post to its proper place. in other words, keeping it simple, while keeping the in mind the point of categories. being a moderator isnt easy but its impossible unless there are some standards that are adhered to across the board. establishing and enforcing those standards make it a lot easier to read and get useful info from forums like this. that all may be a bit off topic and not address why i said "that other place" (ive never posted anywhere but here for car models so i am just speaking from second hand knowledge about other sites so maybe i dont know strictly what im talking about here...most of what i "know" has been drawn from postings here and it seemed to me the over-moderation at other sites came mostly from trying to curtail bickering though i had heard there was a lot of power tripping by moderators on other sites) but i have been dismayed by some of the threads and the evolution of them here of late. so im just saying i would like to get back to a more friendly forum...though i can see room for improvement in the way categories are managed etc. but its not my forum and if i dont like it i will leave (without, let me add, fanfare or weepy posts declaring how much you all will miss me when im gone) but i havent yet so that says something right there. anyway my real point was in my opinion a moderator should never let him/herself known and should be instead an invisible hand of God...otherwise personalities start coming up and the moderator will get endless opinions of why and how things should be done. kind of like this post. now i hear a kit calling me...

would someone care to explain this "Gallery" thing and how it works? was it ever actually announced and explained and i just missed it? i cant seem to see more than a couple of photos from what i assume is a growing collection of images. is there some criteria for posting images there?
-
what i mean by that is that it seems to me like there has been an incredible amount of arguing, backbiting and petty bs going on here of late and thats why everyone escaped from "that other place" at one time. thats the problem: its not "the place", its the people that make the place. pm if you would like a further explanation.

photo etch in a johan kit? am i on mars? most johan kits were lucky to have proper depth interiors never mind advanced concepts like photo etch...unless im missing a big joke here!

GREGG - the December issue,,,,,,,,,,
jbwelda replied to Lyle Willits's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
thats nothing compared to misspelling "Ferrari" three times, in three consecutive issues, in BIG print, after being advised of it after the first time. after that, i gave up all hope and just look at the pictures now. -
youve just made your first big mistake: letting it be known you are the moderator. good luck. lets get this place back to not being "that other place".

yes thats the book cited in the road agent thread, the frame was just weak period never mind deterioration over time, and the two chromed (!) motors were way too much for the minimal frame structure. the subsequent owner, who as i mentioned traded both the beatnik bandit and the outlaw back for it (he previously had bought those two cars from roth), took out the engine internals to reduce the weight, but it wasnt enough and they were constantly repairing the frame until one day it just kind of gave out for good. i think he parted out the car. i forget his name and it would be easy enough to go look it up (but, alas...) but the guy was a mid-west car show promoter.

the miracle of photos: the above photos caused me to reroute the fuel line to along the case instead of above the cooler fan, touch up numerous paint flaws, detail the fan housing hardware and some other stuff...not to mention put in a few hours fiddling to see some progress! more photos soon, perhaps of more substance! thanks for looking folks!

that is really sweet but boy does that box art crack me up! hippies wandering into the forest with their guitars! kind of like jon krakauers "into the wild". and i dont recall ever actually seeing a vw bus with flower appliques in real life but i guess it looks cool in a retro (that never was) way! nice build though and im looking forward to seeing it finished! another anecdote: the one VW bus i remember best is the one with the porsche cookie cutter wheels that passed us, going uphill, at about 70mph, into a headwind, on the way to laguna seca for some races in the early 70s. huh. whats up with that? well whats up was it had a 911 motor along with the wheels as we found out later at the campground where the guy was already well set up by the time we even got there!
