"Little T" restoration and cool store display
jbwelda replied to jbwelda's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
hmmm did find one monogram street t out on ebay but the seller is clearly delusional: buy it now for 162$ that just aint happenin around this household! oh and did i mention he wants 19$ shipping in the usa? insult to injury if you ask me. whatever this cat is smoking i want some of that! i do notice the similarities between the street t and the revell offering shown in this thread: wheels look identical, front end identical, looks like the same kit. unfortunately it also looks like neither have the exhaust headers im looking for nor the wheels, though the front axle certainly looks workable...but the hunt continues. my best bet is to pay my friend jerry amaral a visit and spend an afternoon digging through his parts bins. he is generous enough to let me do that and usually we mutually swap stuff so thats a possibility. on the other hand i am a patient man so maybe i will run up against a build up or parts lot fairly cheap if i keep my eyes open. Lord knows i got plenty of other projects to get to while i wait. thanks again everyone and please let me know if anyone turns anything up. -

emokid, sorry it was kinda late and i didnt read your post right. the front tires you show are pretty close but the rears have wide whitewalls. thanks for the idea though... crazy jim, well thirty dollars for a box might be one way to put it but a) they are not a "box" and b ) they are long lost store displays that originally no one but retailers got. yes they are repros. let me know when you find originals for $30 and i will buy all of them. not sure on your point about the catalina box so im going to let that slide. i aint that crazy. thanks also on the tips on the street t and the revell t. i think i have the revell t on the shelf somewhere but i think i would like to search out the street t because since its from monogram it might have more appropriate parts. i looked into the orange hauler and the little coffin and while the tires seem the same (which is what Casey said) i keep reading into it that the WHEELS and tires are the same which they obviously are not. anyway thanks again for the tips and thats a beautiful build up of the little t and i will use it for building mine since i dont have anything beyond the box top illustration to go by otherwise. -
"Little T" restoration and cool store display

oh so i looked at the link to the built little t and i notice one thing about it: the little t came with chrome wheels (or i am assuming it did since i dont have the wheels...but all the illustrations on the box (i dont have the instrux) show chrome wheels. but the one in the link is actually more accurate to the Big T in that it has red painted wheels with the baby moons. very cool build and you see what i mean about this being a pretty well proportioned and detailed little kit for its day. thanks again! -

thanks for that casey. and emokid, those arent really close, the correct ones are more deep dish and have a baby moon center. i havent yet but you will probably see what i mean if you check the link casey provided. thanks everyone and keep em coming... ive actually been looking for a little coffin for awhile. i figured they might be plentiful since i think they got reissued not too long ago? i will put in a search for the orange hauler now. especially if you happen to have some in your junque box maybe we can set up a trade (i apologize for posting this in an inappropriate forum if it is). ive had a couple of pms asking for the guys contact info, his name is "3names" and heres a link to a typical recent auction. i dont know what the usual routine is but he sold me 3 displays including postage for 90$. they come already assembled and very expertly folded and glued. kinda origami. black widow forty ford truck anyway, again, dont want to seem like a shill for the guy, im just very impressed with these real novel displays. i remember them on the drugstore counter in belleville illinois when i was a kid! -
i imagine most of you folks already know about the guy on ebay who makes and sells these kool replica store displays for a lot of vintage models, but if you don't already, look him up on the bay sometime. he doesnt always have auctions for them running but most of the time he does. anyway that brings me to the point of the post: i have recently started (like 2 evenings now) rebuilding a Little T that ive had for some time, plus i just took delivery on a store display for the car, so that caused me to get inspired. unfortunately the kit i have of it is missing a good number of parts, though whats there is in decent condition and now pretty clean and straight after the quick rebuild. what i really need are the front axle and associated gear, and the four wheels and tires. and the exhaust pipe arrangement hanging off each side. i do have the mufflers and pipes that go under and connect to the cut outs of the headers i am missing. the wheels are basically chrome reversed with baby moons, thin in the front and kinda thicker in the back. whitewall tires front and rear and i believe a slick in the rear. i tried to take pics of the box illustration etc but my camera died. what i would like to know is whether these parts were ever reissued in something easier (read: less expensive) to get your hands on. the "little t" kits typically sell for 50 or 60$ on ebay and thats more than i want to spend on this car. but even if i could get some pretty close wheels and tires i think i would be happy. the axle and brakes and headers are gonna be the hard part. thanks in advance for any suggestions or pointers! this really is a neat old kit and pretty delicate and advanced for its age. the six strombergs are very well detailed and with just a wash it really brings out the linkage and other details. very nice engraving. heres the one photo i did manage to get before my camera dumped. you can see what i mean about the display, they are really kool with a kapital K! and no i have no connection other than being wowed...ive bought about 5 or 6 over the past year to put my re-builds on and they look killer! what i really want to do in the future is buy a perfect kit and build a "little drag" replica using the turtle deck that comes with the little t kit. that would be neat to display with the 1/8 scale one!

been away for awhile so didnt get a chance to get back here till now. >the closest engine to this one is the current release (?) of the '54 Chevy sedan from Model King thanks for the tip...i am going to chase that down. off topic but i should mention i am tempted to use the small hemi out of the ala kart reissue but a real boat anchor like a 409 would be interesting for nostalgia if nothing else, hence my interest in this topic. thanks again and cheers!

thanks for posting those pics...i agree, thats how this section should be! but why left hand steering? its a brit car after all...and i personally like to build cars to their domestic market standard. that said i will not be making it right hand drive! thanks again for the sneak peek!

man that is looking sharp! interior detail is great and those flames really make it. i dig that trunk release thing there too. killer stuff.
-
looks sharp. nice rust effect on the chassis.

6 Cylinder valve covers

yeah more specifics, but in general i would buy at least one. in fact i would buy one right now depending on appearance. -
hey nick, your builds look great. build what you want how you want. eventually you might find you want to spend a bunch of time superdetailing everything, until then be proud of what you do and most people here will respect that. i hated to see that thread on your bird go like it did...most of the advice was good but boy it embarrassed me to read a couple of those posts. just ignore them and keep building.

thanks for the responses and pics, another item on the need list!

alright, definately looking better now, i think Raul and Bill both would agree! (and I only bring Bill Geary into this because I have been in awe of his work for years now and he is kinda up there on another plane for me) looks much more business like now, and now hopefully to continue. i see i am going to have a fit issue with what looks like the corner edges of the dashboard hitting the front-of-windshield cowl so maybe some dremel therapy is in order down there. plus some body detail painting that i hope to get done tonite. many thanks again for looking! improved right profile, still needs the ground effects piece on the front obviously: close look at the rear wheels and wells...now neatly tucked in there: and you can see how this thing is practically tubbed...those are huge width tires, hard to believe they are actually to scale!
-
alright then! not much interest i see.

fyi there is a category for slot cars below that needs the attention

just wanted to revisit this thread for some tips on final assembly, would you be kind enough to take a shot or two of the undercarriage, especially the rear? it looks like your rear wheels and tires are sitting just right and i want to see how much clearance there is between the inner side of the tire and the side of the chassis. many thanks again and congrats on the nice build!

yep raul, that couldnt stay that way. went to bed last night and tossed and turned asking myself: what would bill geary do about it? and it was obvious: tear it apart and try again. so i got up at like 3am and looked at it, started twisting stuff around, figuring its already messed up, i cant really do it much harm, and it ended up coming apart semi successfully. so i got out the dremel and the saw blade and started hacking off part of the wheel hub so the wheels will sit further inboard. may have actually relieved too much but it looked good last i left it to dry up. tonite i think i will attempt to put the wheels back on and see what happens. one will be easy but the other i will have to just goop it up with some epoxy, pose it and let it dry. should hopefully turn out ok. plus all the stuff i had to get gorilla with and was worried about preserving the detail: all that, suspension arms, wheel hubs and brakes etc, that will all be hidden inside the incredibly deep wheels so no real worries there. will try to post improved situation pics later. thanks again for looking!

a bit of one step forward two steps backward but an update is in order. mounted the rear wheels and tires and in the time between when i assembled the rear axle assembly and now, things literally disintegrated, which was a bit of a blessing actually, since the wheels mounted as they were sat on entirely different planes and in a different plane altogether from the front suspension! so i basically put some epoxy on the control arms, on the brake hubs to mount to the wheels and aligned everything by gosh and by golly and let it sit to harden. come back later and looks sweet. but then i notice that the wheels probably should have been mounted inboard about an eighth of an inch from where they are. and they are now solid. the look isnt terrible, sort of like a teenagers fairlane with the rear end jacked up and no muffler, but not really the look im after. heres some photos with the body sitting on the chassis...the front wheel/tire is only mocked up, i might set the height a bit higher than it is here, since there is a significant air dam thingamabob thats not on the front end. all in all a disappointment in the stance department, its really too bad i didnt trial fit more but it was a real pain and i was in immediate danger of dropping or launching the chassis so i said just glue it and there you have it. the more i dwell on it the more likely i am to get out the circular saw on the dremel and show those wheels a thing or two about whos boss here! here is a front shot, obviously a lot of body detailing and finishing up engine compartment to do still but coming along. stance looks ok from this angle though you see what i mean about the fairlane look: a look at the offending rear wheel/tires: closer...oh the horror! engine compartment, body will sit down at least another 1/8" but there will still be gap between the fenders and inner fenderwell: bottom line though: i just dont really love it. sits funny. dont really want to get drastic because it will probably destroy some detail underneath, but i might. i sure wish i had cut about an eighth off each brake hub so the wheels would tuck in there nicely. darn. oh well i will probably finish it up and move on...it will probably look alright but nothing to show the kids.

looking very nice! about the cam cover, i take it you mean you basically lowered its profile on top of the head. i have to say it looks much better this way. maybe its not prototypically correct, i dont know, but it looks great with the lower profile. thanks for posting more pics, its really looking good!
-
ive been imagining a 1/8 scale build of this one i finished a year or two ago. i want to see that body you have there, and need to know where to get one!
-
so i take it the motor and other details just bleedin pale in significant compared to some dumb wheel arch line? this forum is becoming less and less interesting every day. yeah i checked the on the workbench thread. thanks.

im all over those midgets but i am not betting on a detailed or specially detailed rendition of the offy motor. it looks pretty toy like from the bit you can see on the box art. but that really doesnt matter: those two are KOOL with a kapital K and the trailers make them all the better. i cant wait for them to come out! the black widow is another favorite and i had been wondering why the prices for old kits and buildups had been falling recently. still not cheap but i noticed a fall from near 100$ to more like 60 lately. so the secret is revealed, to me, finally. the rest of the stuff, ehh, but i wish they would make static models, even if only in 1/32, of those slot cars. some of the other stuff is a maybe actually depending on what cool parts they might contain. its good to see active new releases though, especially those midgets. i take it they have never been issued before and therefore must be new tools?

so BOTH hasegawa and tamiya have models of a lotus 79 coming out at the same time? seems kind of counter productive. or serious industrial espionage. or something.
-
so about the kit: does anyone know level of detail? i think it said skill level 3 but i couldnt see anywhere on the announcement page any details about, well, details. really kool looking car with those gull wing doors and all, would be nice to have opening doors on the kit. oh and to the OP, i think youre taking it a bit hard. you at least brought the model to my attention, so thanks for that.
