Removing lint from a Future clear coat
jbwelda replied to Vetteman15's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
after future sits around in the bottle for a while (as in years) it tends to get thick. what do you thin it with? water? ammonia (which is anti-Future basically, removes it)? ive used water and it seemed to work ok but just wondering what others do. jb -
crazy e-bay sell cox chaparral
jbwelda replied to 65slotcar's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
>Real magnesium wheels. that was a hallmark of Cox slot cars, that and, in most cases, cast magnesium chassis. very light weight and you should see them collect oxidation with age. some I have look like they are covered in battery acid or salts. a good scrubbing or gentle bead blast and they are clean as new though. jb -
Detail Master Ignition Wire
jbwelda replied to Quick GMC's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
the difference between DM detail wire and ignition wire is obvious...if what you are comparing isn't obvious then there is something wrong. the further difference between DM ignition wire and race car ignition wire is equally obvious. if you are saying the ignition wire is the same size as the detail wire then I would call up your vendor and tell them something is wrong there. the detail wire is REALLY thin gauge so if you think the ignition wire is too small then they probably gave you two packages of detail instead of one and one ignition wire. my DM detail wire package says .0075 inch, ignition wire .012 inch, and race car ignition wire .016 inch. this is from older packaging where they still listed wire diameter on it. jb -
Curious on what I have here
jbwelda replied to fun9c1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
that MGA is 1/32 scale and is very very popular with the slot racing crowd. Monogram made one and I am not sure if Airfix made one in England, maybe there is a trademark on the inside of the body. edit seeing someone elses post I recalled, I think Lindberg made a 1/32 scale MGA too...might have been same tooling as others though. very kool stuff, I would particularly put some time into the boat cleaning and fixing as appropriate. jb -
crazy e-bay sell cox chaparral
jbwelda replied to 65slotcar's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
kinda makes you wish you had picked up a couple when they were on the shelves for $12.99. and driven away in your brand new 5000$ out the door stingray hardtop. jb -
>Would this keep you from buying them? well...maybe. but that's not the point; the point is I am pointing something out that could probably be corrected at least in the next run. and I am a bug for symmetry on stuff like that...I would probably rework the low one and add material below it and take if off above it. kind of a lot of work honestly. but if I were building the car I probably would not even use those side pieces, just the hood and deck. like I said, just a suggestion, those pieces look very nice and I really like the deck lid. jb

Revell Mooneyes Dragster Race Team (eventually)
jbwelda replied to jbwelda's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
thank you Chris. today I have been fiddling with the seat and head pad, here is everything held together with white glue and drying up. can see some more frame details too. thanks again for looking! -
interesting photos! whats with those circuit boards in that one photo? did JoHan also etch boards at that facility? it looks like in one of those factory shots maybe there is a school tour going through at the time...at the front of the table is a little girl and off to her right looks like a bunch of classmates. Or maybe they were the kids of the mothers working there! jb

yes, that's the thing: once they tool up something utility or unique like a trailer, they use it for anything it will fit. that double axle trailer from AMT has been used in a dozen kits as mentioned above. maybe with little accessory changes for each release, but the basic main trailer. I think ALL the trailers illustrated above, except the smaller utility trailer, are exactly the same basic parts, with and without front and side half-panels. the one illustrated above that I really need is the "Indy" (as in independent I would have to guess?) race team with the Nova wagon pulling the nova race car. now that's kool jb

why isn't super clean working?
jbwelda replied to dwayne4385's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
the super clean I got a month ago works fine, but doesn't work for everything. fall back position is brake fluid or possibly oven cleaner or even the strong alcohol. but I highly doubt the product has changed to not work anymore; it works for me with modelmaster enamel still...never did seem to do much for Tamiya and other quasi lacquers. that said it still takes a day or so to even make a dent in enamel unless it is very freshly sprayed on. once it starts biting in though, it will strip to the bone or at least the primer jb -
model master paint rack question
jbwelda replied to dwayne4385's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have also scored these (Tamiya actually) for free from the LHS I patronized regularly. that doesn't mean he will or should just give it to you, but as mentioned above I don't think I would offer > 20 and would try to get it for $10. make an offer of 10 and see what he says jb -
Revell Mooneyes Dragster Race Team (eventually)
jbwelda replied to jbwelda's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I had been planning on using the front cycle wheels and tires from the tony nancy double kit, but then it was brought to my attention that Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland made a kool set of photoetched wheels for the front of dragsters, so I ordered some. they turned out to be pretty challenging for me, in fact I basically botched them during assembly, but they still don't look too bad, need some touch up and a not-too-close vantage point, but overall they look ok. I might end up ordering some more and trying again but the problem will remain getting glue down into the areas that need it as you sandwich the wheel together (made up of outer rim, outer PE spokes, hub, inner PE spokes and inner rim, with brass rod going through a kool building jig to align the whole thing) without gluing the whole mess to the jig itself. I found that rather easier to say than to do, so as I say just this side of usable...beside the chrome moosh of the Nancy ones though they look positively delicate: heres the basic stance I want out of the front axle and wheels: got a big storm or two moving in so maybe I will get some real quality time with this and get closer to getting it on the trailer! jb -
MPG estimates vs. reality
jbwelda replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
> And she WON the case, and was awarded nearly ten grand first of all, this often ultimately turns out to not be the case. though in this particular case the amount is so miniscule that aside from not allowing a precedent to be set, there is no point in a company the size of Honda fighting a settlement for that amount...that basically lunch money. but the classic case is the one of the woman who got a settlement of multi million dollars because she burned herself on the hot coffee at mcky d's. only she never collected that, it got overturned and if I remember correctly she only got actual medical bills and I don't think it even covered her lawyer fees for the original lawsuit. so my point is, its rare these non-common-sensical decisions stand the (legal) test of time. the law is an ass as one astute observer noted, and "this is not a court of justice, it is a court of law" as another saw it, but still things seem to get straightened out in the long run. more to the subject I just bought a recent Toyota Tacoma 4X4 that is rated at 17/19 and I am getting 20+ consistently. that shows what driving a certain way (I don't typically tromp on the loud off every stop like most amerkens seem to do) will do for ya. jb -
What type of "Box Art" do you prefer?
jbwelda replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If its artwork (as the primary box image), then it had better illustrate what is in the box, not some really kool wheels and parts that are not included. that's the problem with artwork...its too easy to make something look nice when in actuality its going to take a lot of work to get it there. and I say that primarily because of new people entering the hobby and getting disenchanted by whats actually in the box after being sold by the image on the cover. its a lot like the difference between the big mac on the poster vs. the one on the tray in front of you. jb -
Is it going to be molded in the red color? I hope not... saw a half assembled test shot Darryl Gassaway had with him at NNL, it looked pretty nice though not really my cuppa. jb

Tweedy Pie 2 with Bantam body updated 2-22 14
jbwelda replied to cobraman's topic in WIP: Model Cars
looks kool and I really think the tweedy pie chassis is great; ive used it in a number of projects myself if I may, could I suggest you slot the body so it sits down over the rear axle more and then if you raise the front of the body, do it only slightly to make it sit level to the ground more or less. I think low and level is going to look really menacing. jb -
