Painting wheels
mikemodeler replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have heard that it will Andy, although I have yet to try it. Check it out on some scrap pieces first before jumping to the wheels in question. White glue has multiple uses and this is one of them. -
Painting wheels
mikemodeler replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
very carefully ! I use some liquid masking on the chrome portions that I want to remain chrome and paint the rest of the areas argent silver. It takes a steady hand, a fine tip paint brush and a lot of patience. Not sure what you are working on but I believe the ralley wheels in the AMT 69 Chevelle are unplated and have the chrome hubcaps and trim rings separate, which should make painting them a snap. -
there is a member here that has cast that wheel in resin, a very clean and nice one at that! I would be interested in what the trim ring looks like.

You will be happy with your purchase, Sean casts some nice pieces!

Wrecker bed assy..
mikemodeler replied to rel14's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The member is Stacey and his kit is very nice. I have yet to assemble the one I have but hope to do so soon. There was a company in Canada that had some wrecker beds but have since gone out of business. Not sure how well the recent re-issue Revell Wrecker is selling ( I bought two!) but hopefully it is giving Revell enough to think about a newer kit. -

I will go along with Jordan on this one- what is included and what would be the price point? Could be interested if the price is right. -
A Good Deed...
mikemodeler replied to modelmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Great story Mike, glad to hear about paying it forward. I haven't had the chance to do that just yet, but I have handed out Hobby Lobby coupons when at the store. It was nice to see the smile on a kid's face when he ran up to his Mom with the coupon and tell her about it. -
1979 Dodge Ramcharger
mikemodeler replied to Car Crazy 81's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
I like the subject but the kit seems like it leaves a little to be desired when it comes to detail under the hood and the underside/chassis. Let us know what you plan to do to it- a full restore, a repaint or weather it like it is. -
Goodwill has to pay someone to box up and ship those kits, along with getting a box and some packing materials so while $13 seems high, it probably is close to their actual costs. I agree that some shipping charges seem out of line, but maybe if the kits were $13.00 and the shipping was $7.00, it would seem more in line?

There was an article in another magazine about cutting a slice in the tops of the fenders and inserting some styrene to widen out the fenders. I can't remember which issue it was but I think it was a two part article about building an old NASCAR.

Not mentioned in these posts but alluded to above is the venting of the booth, which is important. It is also necessary to wear the proper respirator so you can protect your lungs and be around for a long time! Regardless of how well your booth vents, protecting your lungs with a dual stage respirator only makes sense. These can be picked up at big box home centers or auto parts stores for $20 or less, so it is cheap insurance for your health. I am sure there are some who feel that wearing a respirator is overkill considering the amount of paint fumes created by modeling compared to painting a 1:1 car but the toxins are still there and hazardous nonetheless.

Well, depending on the model, it either gets put away or it gets opened up and checked out. I just inventoried my stash and I have 280 sealed kits and an unknown number of opened and started kits but probably somewhere between 120-150. There are some kits that were bought with the sole intention of pirating certain parts for projects and the remainder of the kit becomes trade material or paint practice. I am trying to restrain myself from impulse buying kits in the future as I really don't want to go through the process of inventorying and selling kits that I know will never get built again.

I know one way to find out........but I would rather spend the money on something that someone engineered properly. The same could probably be said about kitchen range hoods too Harry, afterall they are designed to extract fumes and are subjected to grease, but how many times do you hear about kitchen fires that start in the ductwork? I have seen and heard of many! If I can afford $25 model kits and $8 cans of Tamiya spray paint, then I can afford $200 for a properly built and engineered spray booth, even if it means fewer kits and spray paints. I could use my weedwacker to mow my lawn, but isn't my lawnmower designed to do that? Just Sayin!

Very nice and if it wasn't for those out of scale mirrors from that kit, i would guess from that last picture it was a real car! Clean details and paint and excellent execution. I think the stance is just right and the wheels are a nice custom touch.

Show circuit
mikemodeler replied to kustoms4lyfe2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Great idea in concept but I think the logistics and costs involved would be too great to get participation where it would be profitable. In the past, The Goodguys shows had a model contest ( i think) and there might have been others- World of Wheels rings a bell- and maybe a tie-in there with the Revell contest in the future could be the closest we come to such an event. While most of us do this as a hobby and try to be frugal, in the 1:1 world you have car builders and shop owners who make their living building custom cars and use those shows to showcase their talent and attract new customers, something model builders typically don't do. -
Thanks for the responses guys and I am still getting the list together of the kits I want to sell formatted for everyone to review. I think I have figured out my plan for selling these kits without having to spend a ton of money or time in the process. First I will offer them up to members here via PM- please don't send me a message just yet! I will let you all know when I am ready!! What ever kits are left over I will take to a show in Simpsonville, SC (Greenville area) in mid-May. If there are any left after that, I will consider eModelcars and then eBay or any other upcoming model shows/swap meets. My plan includes getting some boxes and packing material ready so that I can ship fairly quickly and cheaply once I am ready to go. I would like to be able to offer free shipping but it will obviously be reflected in the kit price if I do. I am not sure how International shipping works (cheapest, most reliable, etc) so I may elect to ship USA only, I will try to get all the facts and figures. To Dan's point above, my re-investment plans do include some kit purchases and most likely a Pace spray booth as I want to have a clean & safe painting station to replace the cardboard box in the garage! My goal is to reduce the number of impulse buys and instead focus on those kits that I truly intend to build. Thanks again, I should have the list ready by this weekend and will start a new post alerting you all !

You ever see Young kids buy models,
mikemodeler replied to rel14's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
According to my wife I am a big kid and I am 48 years old! I think some of it has to do with availability and cost. 40 years ago my Mom could buy me a kit at the grocery/drug store when she was shopping for $3.00 and I would have new (extra) chores to do once I got home. Today you would have to drive out of your way to find model kits, at least here in Charlotte you would, and unless you went to Hobby Lobby or Michaels with a coupon, you will be out $25. -
I have no doubt that eBay is the best way to sell these kits but it is the time aspect that has me aprehensive over starting down that road. With 170 kits to possibly sell (maybe more), it could take me a considerable amount of time to get rid of them, not to mention my free time, which I have very little of. I have considered selling them in lots, although that can be tricky because they have to be the right combos to appeal to buyers. Thanks for the tip, if I list them on eBay I will let the forum know.

You have picked two of more challenging kits to assemble, best of luck with them. -
Some people are crazy
mikemodeler replied to Modlbldr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Or maybe he saw the guy selling old kits piecemeal and figured if a set of wheels and tires is worth $25, then the whole kit has to be worth $100! -
I have checked Craigslist, but there is little activity here in Charlotte. On a negative side, there has been a rash of robberies associated with Craigslist here locally, not that model builders are the type prone to ripping others off ! There is a show about 90 minutes south of here in mid-May that could be an outlet, will have to see what tables run. Thanks for the tip.

Not sure I would trust such a set up. There are reasonably priced already assembled spray booths out there that take the guesswork out of which motor to use and how to vent it. If you do decide to build your own, do a forum search on the topic and there should be multiple posts available for viewing.

mikemodeler replied to Modelcollector's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Depending on what I am shipping, I will look into delivery confirmation and insurance. If it is just a set of wheels, then I usually pass on it, but a kit will always get d/c and insurance, because it is cheap to do so and gives the guy on the other end some piece of mind in the event there is a problem. Posting names of "bad" traders, like Harry has stated, can get tricky and we have enough drama here without going down that road, don't we? Look at the controversy stirred up over the "comments" thread!
