Another day of building models.
mikemodeler replied to DRG's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hope you enjoyed the time building Don and you are safe from the rising waters! It was 82 here in Charlotte yesterday and I was able to get one body repainted- spent the rest of the day doing yard work. We are supposed to be settling into a warmer weather pattern so hopefully I can get a bunch of bodies painted so I have something to do once the heat and humidity hits. Stay safe! -
Very nice and great details, I'll bet those pinstripes were fun to get lined up and smooth! I have a friend who owns one of these in 1:1 and judging from your pictures, I would say you nailed the look 100%. I might have to convert one of my AMT '67 / '68 kits into a Pace Car too!

Bob, One word describes that model WOW When I get around to building mine I will be sure to send it to you for paint and foil, that will be the only way it will look decent! Great job and can't wait to see it in the Under Glass section!

What does it take to Build a Model?
mikemodeler replied to DRG's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Don, Great topic! I agree with the 3 things you have listed- knowledge, desire and patience. As far as tools go, that can be debated as I started nearly 40 years ago with a simple pocket knife and whatever file or sandpaper I could find. I didn't know about exacto knives, polishing kits, hobby files, multiple grades of sandpaper, proper primers and color coats and clear coats! Today I have more tools and sandpaper than I ever imagined. I would suggest that anyone starting out in this hobby equip themselves with a good #11 knife, an assortment of sanding sticks, some 320 thru 2000 grit sandpaper and a ton of patience! Everything else can be added as the skills and desire improves. -

I believe they re-run the show on Sunday mornings. I could be wrong so check your listings or set your DVR (like I will!). -
Dupage County Toy and Model Show
mikemodeler replied to Joe Handley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I always enjoyed this show when I lived in the area, hope you find some good buys! -
Rob, If you are just going to build a few models and not a bunch, consider the Testors One Coat line at Hobby Lobby. They are mostly metallics and bright colors, which may appeal to the kids. These dry quickly and look pretty decent when done. They are truly a one coat paint. Something to consider when clearcoating a paint job is using Future floor wax. I recently tried it and was pleasantly surprised at the results. It is easy to use, I brushed it on, and it cleans up easily. If the Future has dirt or runs, it can be removed with Windex. It is a new way of clearcoating paint jobs without the toxicity of some of the other options out there.

Is that the car that Rahm Emmanuel will ride in for his inauguration ceremony as the new mayor (Da Mare) of Chicago? Somebody had too much time and some sick thoughts when they put that together.

1969 Camaro w/572 BB (Finished Sat. 2/26/11
mikemodeler replied to mannyclub's topic in WIP: Model Cars
The April issue of Hot Rod Magazine has a sweet '61 Biscayne with a 572 in it that was built by Bryan Fuller, of Two Guys Garage fame. I think that will provide me with the inspiration to use the VCG engine I got last month! Need some updates Craig! -
I am sure they will sell my 300+ kit collection on eBay and retire rich and happy! I should leave my wife a few names and phone numbers so she doesn't get tricked into giving them away or getting next to nothing for them. I have thought about selling them down as I doubt that I will build them all in this lifetime, but then that would be admitting what she has been saying for years..."You have too many models!"

Marc, That is looking sweet and nice to see it getting close to being done. I worked with a guy who had a '67 Camaro from Nickey Chevrolet that was similar in color to yours, down to the black nose stripe and deluxe interior. I remember a few rides in that car- nothing like an L-88 Camaro to snap your neck when going through the gears! Get it done so we can see it finally finished! Mike

Welcome to MCM Thumper, glad to see this build over here. That is coming along very nicely and looks pretty accurate. I mentioned on the other forum that this car is owned by a friend of mine and when I head back home later this year I hope to see it and maybe go for a ride! His brother tells me that the owner is in awe of the horsepower this car has and it definitely is not for the faint of heart. Thanks again for sharing it here.

Ollies ad this week
mikemodeler replied to Dave's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I hit the Ollie's in Matthews NC today and got two Crown Vic police cars for $7.99 each but the selection looked like it had been picked thru pretty well. I walked around and did find some Duplicolor Van& SUV touch up paint for $.99/can. Pretty much blue, red and green but quite a bargain! These are the larger cans (10 oz ?) and can probably get 4 or 5 paint jobs from each one! They still had some of the 1:25 scale skid loaders for $14.99 -
Has anyone ever built this kit?
mikemodeler replied to bigdodge88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have that kit around here somewhere, never got around to finishing it but I just might! To make that truck in stock 4wd form, a little kit bashing and a resin piece will get you there. The LRE, as mentioned, has the rear end and you can pick up the front axle, transfer case & leaf springs in resin from Dencon Resin to do a stock 4wd conversion of this kit. I might have enough pieces/parts to cobble together a truck in stock form and if I do, I might see if it could be casted by a resin caster. -
Okay Don, 1 down and the rest of your builds to go! Looks good and it will only get better as you do more of them, I know because I have seen the improvement in my BMF skills. The 50's and 60's era cars are the best to work on with BMF as they have a bunch of chrome work to do and I think you should tackle a '57 Chevy or Caddy next! Keep at it, you will get better at it!

Lindberg Charger police car kits
mikemodeler replied to 1320wayne's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think I will buy a couple of these just because of the 8 lightbars alone! I am not a huge police car builder but something about the Charger appeals to me, don't know what it is! Hard to believe that in this age of kits that we will have 8 lightbars! -
BMF, I don't want to do this.
mikemodeler replied to DRG's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Don, Take your time, don't try to do it all at once. I often take up to a week or more to BMF a car because I tend to stress out over it and I suspect your fear might cause the same issue. I waited a long time to finally BMF my models and now that I have, I enjoy the look of them when they are done. I have about 4 or 5 models that are at that stage and that is what is holding them back from being in the display cases! As a wise man once said......Patience Grasshopper! -
MCM December Issue #155 Arrived Today
mikemodeler replied to Crazy Ed's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
George, The problem is most likely with the way the mag gets feed thru their sorting machines at the PO. I agree that it is a shame that GB has to send replacement copies and it adds to the cost but at least they are willing to do that. IIRC when I requested replacement copies they were sent in an envelope so they didn't get shredded a second time! It has been discussed on here countless times before that the paper that MCM is printed on may play a part in the damages that occur to it. Speaking for myself, very rarely do any of my other magazines show up with any damage on them compared to MCM and I believe it may be due to the difference in the paper material used by Golden Bell Press. -
MCM December Issue #155 Arrived Today
mikemodeler replied to Crazy Ed's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hopefully I will see my issue here soon but I am convinced they pass it around the post office before putting it in my mailbox! Sounds like some good articles in it, can't wait to hold it in my hands. -
The possibility of "No Chrome" Kits
mikemodeler replied to Dragline's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As has been stated a no chrome kit appeals to a small bunch of modelers in the hobby. Start producing kits without chrome, especially those that should have chrome pieces, and you lose me as a customer. I have neither the time nor the desire to master the art of spraying Alcad because someone wants to offer a new kit with "chrome delete". A better question would be "How many of the new Mobieus Lonestar kits will you buy if you have to do your own chroming?" Me? NONE! Besides, I have 300 kits yet to build so if it were to come to be, I would be busy for quite some time before I buy another kit. -
I am with Stasch, if you have a distributor in the US I would be interested. I liked the video and they look simple enough to use.

What is black washing
mikemodeler replied to dragster_dub's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Allan, Find some old chrome pieces to experiment on, that is what is typically done to a grille to give it some depth. It can also be used to give parts a weathered look, like on an engine or wheels for example. You can buy a product from The Detailer to do a wash on or use some thinned black paint or ink to do it yourself. The key is to practice on scrap pieces first to master the skill and the consistency of the wash. Look around here and keep asking questions, a very helpful bunch is here. Welcome to the forum! -
help for a friend
mikemodeler replied to lonewolf01's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for the update George, hopefully enough phone calls and prayers would be enough to lift his spirits. Can you get us an address for the Nursing Home so we could send him some pictures or cards? I doubt he has alot of interesting stuff to read there! Maybe we could send him some magazines (car related ONLY! ) as a means to lift him up. Thanks again. -
Sounds like he is on the mend and I am glad to hear that he is out of the hospital. Get well soon Ed!

55 CHEVY QUESTION
mikemodeler replied to chris coller's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Tower Hobbies has this kit for $18.49 plus shipping. It is listed under Monogram and has the black car on the box cover. Check out their website and I think you will find some other items that you may need and then the shipping is spread over several items and is easier to accept. Keep in mind that UPS and FedEx recently raised their rates as the higher fuel prices have forced them to pass along higher costs!
