What type of car is this?
Snake45 replied to 426 pack's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Some of them look like they'd make believable '70s "pimpmobiles." I'm pretty sure I could make SOMETHING cool out the Bugatti, though--and probably the Mercer, too. -
What Kits Were Molded in Green?
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Didn't say it wasn't an RS. I said it's not an SS/RS, which is what you originally said. It's a Z/28/RS. If you'd said that to start with, I'd have known exactly what kit you meant. -
I count 10 builtups, so that's $60. Yup, the restorable '68 Coronet and '70 GTO are worth that right there, not even counting everything else. You are making me cry again.

I noticed that 426Pack's is colored exactly the opposite of Bucky's. Pretty clever: Run the molds in light green, then run them in dark green, then switch half the sprues on every kit going out the door! Genius! -

But that's not an SS/RS as stated. -

MPC? I think I have one molded in orange. A convertible--or maybe someone just cut the top off it. I have it in a box of leftover MPC '69 Camaro parts. -
Would love to see that back. IMHO it has a superior overall body shape to any of Revellogram's THREE attempts at a '70 Cuda. I recently bought a glue bomb of one of these JUST to graft in the Revell 3rd generation grille and tail panel and build the Sox & Martin '70 Pro Stock out of it.

It's one of the Renwall fantasy "1966" kits released in or about that year. I think there were about a half dozen of them of various long-dead marques--Deusenberg, Stutz, Mercer, and so forth. I'm not sure but this might be the Stutz. Or maybe Mercer. If you're not interested in it, I'm sure someone here is looking for it and will swap you something more to your liking for it. ETA: There ya go! I see Bucky slipped in with the correct answer while I was typing. -
Johnny Lightning.

It's a great color for all sorts of '60s light metallic blues. I did a '69 Camaro in it years ago.

AMT '67-'68 Camaro Review & Improvements
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Yeah, that's a completely different kit with a whole different set of problems. It's basically unfixable, but with the much superior Revell '69 commonly available (even in a convertible), there's not much reason to even try. Best thing for that (MPC) kit is to come up with some FUN way to build it, and just have FUN with it. -
Those Revell snapper '63 Vettes are nice. I've done four of them now, so I guess they're kind of addictive.

Now THAT's one I've never heard of! -
Look close and you'll see why he NEEDS all those lights: In case he happens to be driving somewhere and has a tailwind that's moving forward faster than he is.

Never knew this existed till I saw it at the local toy show last month. It seemed to be worth the $10 (used) asking price. Some googling seems to show some kind of relationship between the Castlne name and M2 (perhaps M2 marketed them for a while?), and that in addition to black, this has also been issued in blue and white with different wheels. They retail for about $30. It's quite heavy—metal chassis. The suspension is all plastic, and by that I mean, not even metal axles. The tires are weird and in trying to get one of them off the wheel, I broke the whole right side of the rear axle (differential) off. If you want to change the wheels/tires on this one, be prepared to re-engineer the suspension at all four corners. I decided to leave these wheels and tires alone (after sanding the treads, of course), especially after having to re-glue the broken rear axle not once but twice. Overall shape isn't bad. The profile of the roof and upper doors/upper forward rear quarters isn't quite accurate for a HT or convertible, but then again it's not quite right for a sedan, either. It's somewhere in between, maybe slightly more sedan than hardtop. The whole top is plastic! Maybe the original plans were to also issue this basic body with a top with B-pillars and window frames as well as the hardtop. It could have passed. Although it's not accurate, I don't find the profile shape objectionable. To the contrary, I kind of like it. More offensive to my eye were the chrome trim pieces at the top/rear of the rear fender fins. The trim pieces had a definite upward sweep to them, making the whole back end of the car look almost more like a Plymouth than a Chevy. That would have to be fixed. And here it is after the required Snake-Fu. I sanded the tire treads, disassembled it to hit the headlight stems with white paint (which didn't work that well on this one; I ended up having to also put some white pearl acrylic paint right on the face of the lenses to kill the googly-eye look), and filed and sanded the fin-top trim down to run parallel to the fender tops, which IMHO really improved the profile of the whole model. Of course the grille got a black wash, too. That's about it. Didn't notice till I took the pictures that a mirror on the left side seems to be broken off; it wasn't on there when I bought it. (This is why I hardly ever put mirrors on my models—they get broken off and lost far too often anyway. If whoever gets my models after I'm dead wants mirrors on them, he can add them himself.) Now, what scale is it? It's touted as 1/24, but as you can see, the wheelbase is exactly the same as the wheelbase of the Revell '55 2DS, and when I built that one, I compared its body to the AMT '55 Bel Air 2DS kit and found it almost identical in dimensions, so AFAIC, this 210 HT is 1/25. It's a little longer than the Revell '55 2DS, but then I believe the real '57 Chevies were a little longer than their '55 counterparts, too. (It's also a little wider than the Revell '55, but not enough to worry about IMHO.) The two look pretty good together, don't they?

AMT '67-'68 Camaro Review & Improvements
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
MPC didn't issue a '68 Camaro in the '80s. Their '68 Camaro molds were modified into a halfassed '69 in late 1968, and have been such ever since. And it was issued in orange at some point. That body has its own problems. I think the AMT kit was issued under the Matchbox name in the '80s, and in orange. Could that be what you're thinking of? If so, it's the very same body as shown/modified above. -
I don't blame you a bit. I wouldn't either. I couldn't even bring myself to strip and repaint this one, though I DID take it apart and restore and Snake-Fu it as necessary. I think the original builder would be pleased.

Wal-Mart model car boxes
Snake45 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm planning to build both kits, plus the MPC 1960 and the newer Revell '58, and display them all together. -
I have one of those, in desperate need of restoration/rebuild, bought off eBay almost a decade ago. I have new Slixx decals for it. Biggest problem is one A-pillar is missing completely, but I can either sili-clone that from a mint Comet body, or just scratch it out of sheet styrene--it's a simple shape. I've also got pics of that car in a 1970 Car Craft with that hood scoop the other way--pointy end forward, opening in the back. I think it looks better that way. When I rebuild it, I'm gonna do it that way. Guess I need to be on the lookout for that shade of yellow paint. Model Master Chrome Yellow just won't do for that.

I bought the Maverick and Comet pro stocks at the LHS at the same time in the late '80s. Later, the Mavericks dried up and went away, while the Comets were among the very last JoHan kits available (in Testor boxes) up into the late '90s or early 2000s, whenever. I wonder what happened to the Maverick?

I built one of those in 1966, and guess what, I still have it! Should dig it out and restore it soon, I guess. -

Thanks for the clarification. I have an AMT "1959" on the bench even as we speak, and the ancient Revell "1960" is rising to the top of the To-Do pile. -
I've been looking for that Monogram Bugatti. If you have no particular interest in or plans for it, please keep me in mind first? (I won't even TRY to talk you out of the two yummy IMCs.)
