Early 60s T roadster
Snake45 replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mine too. Someday I'm going to build a model of that, or something very much like it. -
detail Pet peeve of mine!
Snake45 replied to Mercuryman54's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Seen it many times. In fact, I don't think a week goes by here I don't see a really nicely done model that the first thing catches my eye is a big mold parting line running down the rear window line and across the rear fender. -

They always scan my paper coupon. Sometimes they have to scan it three or four times before it beeps. -

Somebody tell me that VW is a joke. It's a static display piece, or RC, or something. Right? I'm not normally claustrophobic, but just the idea of trying to get into or out of that thing gives me the willies. -
R.I.P. Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen

Hey, we're getting to the age where the heros of our youth are going to be moving on. Nothing you can do about it. Thanks for all the good memories, Mongoose. -
Dodge Revellion Funny Car Revisited
Snake45 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, there were several of those kinds of things done. NHRA outlawed them, and they must not have worked all that well because they didn't even last that long on the match race circuit. -

Whole different arrangement. That one, you COULD see out of, at least a little. (Hey, people manage to land F4U Corsairs. ) -
Nice job of the white stripes on the cowl vents. That's a detail that many ignore or overlook because it's not easy to do, especially in white. Good to see it taken care of for a change.

Dodge Revellion Funny Car Revisited

One has to wonder how the driver was supposed to see where the whole contraption was going, being hunkered down below the level of the trunk lid and whatnot. -
NHRA gasser rules always mandated two seats and a "finished" (not gutted) interior. They were, at least theoretically, streetable cars, which is why they had to have headlights and so forth. But as we've established, this build is a modern "gasser-inspired" car, not necessarily a 100% historically accurate competition machine.

Dyno Don Funny car coming next year 2018

Pretend that it's an original annual, and you're scoring it for the price of a new current kit! BAM, what a deal! Score! -
The client was pleased with it. Big squirt of Elmer's Glue in a small bottle (I use a plastic 35mm film can, but a pill bottle or old paint bottle would work just as well), thinned with HOT water to whatever consistency you want--and it will take much LESS hot water to thin the stuff than you'd think, trust me--a few drops will do. If you get it too thin, squirt in some more Elmers and keep stirring. When you have it where you want it (I like a brushable gel), stir in one or two drops of dishwashing liquid to break the surface tension it will have when go to use it. Dawn works well. The soap also seems to promote easy, troublefree removal of the mask when you're done. Finally, a few drops of food coloring (I use red) can help you keep track of where you have the stuff, and where you might need more. This homebrew works FAR better than ANY liquid mask I've ever paid cash money for.

It's Testor Chrome Silver, airbrushed BEFORE the main paint and masked with my homebrew liquid mask, applied by hand with a brush. Seemed like the best way to do this particular job. I thought it did a pretty good job of portraying the trim on the real car, which wasn't SUPER bright chrome.

You can use it once a day all week. I'm pretty sure you could use more than one printed coupon a day if you could get a different cashier. Might work with the phone coupon too. Of course I generally pay cash so I don't know if the computer ties your coupon use to your credit card and would lock you out for 24 hours, or something like that. -
I'm thinking of doing this one as a kit car, of sorts--Palmer '66 "Corvette." It's just wonky enough to look like an obvious fake. Unlike most of the Palmers, this one is actually somewhere in the general neighborhood of 1/25, at least in overall length. I think I can sort of section it a little, and finagle the contours, and make it look like something someone might have made to drop on a VW chassis.

Well I've had the problem, too, Steve, on more than one sheet. Also had the one where the stuff just cracks and falls apart and is impossible to get off the sheet and use in any way. So I can relate to the complaints. I will grant you that when BMF works as advertised, there's nothing better. (I've personally had spectacular results with it.) Occasional problems might be be acceptable if I had a LHS that stocked the stuff and would cheerfully exchange a bad sheet for a good one with no more trouble than a drive across town. But combine the high price of the product, the trouble I have to go to to get it, AND the high percentage of failure I've personally experienced., and you can see why I've developed workarounds involving household foil and MS MFA, Silver Sharpies, Molotov, and yes even old school Testor Chrome Silver. So if BMF has worked for you and IS working for you, then good for you, but please don't put down those of us who are taking other paths. We might have good reasons.

Dyno Don Funny car coming next year 2018

Some good era pics here: http://www.hotrod.com/articles/unseen-vintage-photos-from-the-life-of-dyno-don-nicholson/ -
It's not intended to portray a typical 1958 gasser. My take is that it's a modern interpretation of the mid/late '60s gasser look, which is not always 100% or accurate or NHRA-legal for the real 1960s. But I have seen a LOT of these cars in magazines like Car Culture Deluxe and books like that, and he has the current "vibe" of these things down just about perfect.

And photographed on the ramp with an F-100! How cool!

I use the generic stuff or Walmart, it's pretty much the same. Name brand like Reynold wrap is thicker, but also has its uses. And yes, I've made foil-copy emblems with it.
-
Very nice! As Letterman used to say, "You got all of that one, my friend!" Well done and model on!.

You probably won't be able to use the MS MFA on BMF, but it will work great on common kitchen foil. I use it all the time.
