That stock is fascinating. I've never seen a laminate that wasn't done vertically. This one is horizontal, and the laminations seem to have a curve or bend in them. I wonder if they were cut that way, or bent that way? The design of the stock looks a little like a Fajen, but I don't think it's an actual Fajen. Whatever you've got here, it's very unusual, very unique, and very cool! Oh, BTW, has it been converted to cock-on-opening?

Hobby Lobby/ Michaels ?
Snake45 replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
AC Moore has fewest kits and highest prices--full metal retail or worse (but they sometimes have 50 or 55% off coupons). Michaels has slightly better kit selection but best selection of non-kit craftish accessories which are occasionally useful. HL has best selection of model kits but it's still poor compared to even a halfway decently stocked LHS, which I don't have access to anymore. HL also has best selection of Testor paints and model building tools/accessories, though again, not as good as a real LHS. -
That's a beauty, a real classic. Whoever put it together had style and taste.

Camaro Convertible Question
Snake45 replied to DumpyDan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's not a convertible up-top, it's just a separate hard top, like the ones in the original annual '66 Mustang and the '65 GTO. The same top's also in the AMT '68 Firebird. -
Camaro Convertible Question
Snake45 replied to DumpyDan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There used to be an outfit called R&R Vacuumcraft (I think) that did one, but they're long OOB. They did a lot of vac-formed convertible uptops. At one time I bought a couple of them but as I recall they didn't really fit all that well. -
I like crossword puzzles, but only the big Sunday ones with a theme or a clever code of some kind that has to be cracked. I work the Sunday New York Times, Washington Post, and LA Times puzzles every week--in pen (red ink, just to show off). My par time is about 45 minutes, but I can sometimes do the WashPoo one in 30.

Motor City Resin Casters order
Snake45 replied to Fat Brian's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Your experience mirrors mine exactly, except I didn't wait 8 weeks, just a couple (this was a few years ago). The body I bought, you'd swear it was an original '60s model molded from that lovely virgin AMT white styrene. Absolutely first rate operation in every way! -
Improving Lindberg's 72 Challenger
Snake45 replied to Fat Brian's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I picked up a cheap glue bomb AMT yesterday just for the hood. The AMT hood is longer and narrower than the Lindberg, and has cowl vents near the rear edge, with the Lindberg lacks. So it's nowhere near a direct drop in, though I suppose you could make it work if you really wanted to. Was kinda surprised to see that the AMT stock Shaker hood opening is actually bigger than the Lindberg's supercharger hole. If one wanted to have an accurate stock Shaker hood on the Lindberg, the best way might be to cut the center section out of the AMT hood and graft it into the Lindberg hood. At this point, I think I'm just gonna fill the hole in the Lindberg hood and turn it into a plain flat hood. -
Chad Hiltz : "Green Goblin" on the Workbench 3/6/18

I agree! AND you wouldn't be hacking up two rare old kits to do it. -
New guy/ Chevelle conv questions
Snake45 replied to bvilleracer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
First things first, before you get off in the superdetail weeds. Don't forget to remove the chrome strip that runs down the lower body sides. That's a holdover from 1968 and shouldn't be on a '69 SS or COPO 9562 (which is what a 427 Yenko would be). Get some better taillights. The kit ones are awful. Several aftermarket suppliers offer copies of the original '69 annual and promo taillights and bezels. I just got some from Modelhaus, but they're now OOB, but I know other makers offer these parts too. All your engine problems can be solved by using the L72 427 from the Revell '69 Yenko Camaro kit. The same engine is used in the 9562 Chevelles. And if you're going to mount the factory air cleaner, don't worry about the carb underneath it--it won't show anyway. I've never heard of any 9562 Chevelle convertibles being built, but that doesn't mean you can't do one. Phanton/what-if builds are a lot of fun! -
Wild 2021 Dodge Viper
Snake45 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The only way that could look better is if it were a 2-door. -
I'm pretty much into guns, cars, and airplanes. I can't afford real cars or airplanes so I build models of them. Upon further reflections, I also seem to be stuck in time. I prefer the airplanes of the 1940s through the 1960s, cars of the 1960s though early '70s, and guns of the 1940s though '70s or maybe '80s. I'm often heard to quote Steve McQueen in The Hunter: "New things are no good."

Be aware that the AMT Double Dragster kit has two SBC hilborn intakes, but NO ram tubes. You'll have to make those yourself somehow.

She's OCD or worse. People who tell me I don't "need" this or that, or ask why I "need" something or other annoy me. Fortunately, today I have a ready comeback, as I'm about the only person I know who doesn't own a cellphone. So I just fire back, "Why do you need a cell phone? Do you have to be on 24-hour standby so the President can ask you whether or not to launch the missiles? And I can tell you, you DON'T need one. I've gotten along without one for over 60 years now and I'm doing fine. Why don't you get rid of that thing and stop being a slave to it?" Most people don't want to play "Why Do You Need...?" with me anymore after that.

Vistacruiser type wagon--with wood sides. Pull THAT off tastefully (and I think it could be done), and you are a modeler, my friend!

Don't think I've ever seen one actually build before. Nicely done!

Those AM-Ts are always a fun build!

It works GREAT. Using a NEW Q-tip (don't screw around with a paintbrush), slop ONE coat on THICK, and don't worry about getting it even, just worry about 100% coverage. Let it dry. You won't believe how thin it is, and you might think it won't work, but it will. Throw the Q-tip away. Then and only then cut the decal out. NEVER cut a decal and then Superfilm it--you'll never get if off the paper. You'll soon wonder how you lived this long without the stuff.

If I wanted to build that, I think I'd start with the convertible kit and modify the soft up-top.

Sweet! Ironically, this is one of the cleanest builds of this kit I've ever seen (it's a beast). Well done and model on! (If you're looking for an easy build for your next TV/Movie Car project, I've got one for you: What appears to be a factory stock blue '68 El Camino in used but pretty clean shape has shown up on this season of Fear the Walking Dead. And it's been "featured" (even mentioned several times by name) as much as any vehicle in that franchise ever has, so it's kind of a "star.")

Very nice! I've been messing with one of these off and on for a couple years now. Thanks for showing me that it can come out just fine. Well done and model on!
