AMT 1966 Pro Street Nova
Snake45 replied to Steve "Stangfreak? Mason's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Haven't built the PS but I built the stocker years ago and the ONLY problem I had with it was trying to figure out which way was up on the hood trim. Oh, and the hood won't close with the air cleaner on without modification. -
Amazing! You have WAY more patience and persistence than I do, my friend. Model on!

Hot Rod Rule #17: If at first it doesn't fit, get a bigger hammer.

Got this at an estate sale in the early '90s, so it's been in my possession in this condition for 25 years or so. I'd completely forgotten about it until I got an urge to work on the Aston-Marin DB4 and the '71 Cuda I got in the same sale, and rediscovered it in the same box. Seems to be an '80s reissue, molded in red. Here's what it looked like straight from its cardboard tomb in the Snakepit: This is about as close as I get to a straight-up restoration, in that I didn't add or change anything; I even kept the “Day 2” wheels and tires (for the time being). I blew it apart, cleaned everthing with dishwashing soap and water, sanded the tread on the tires, polished out the glass, and did the window trim with Silver Sharpie (as well as some touchup on the wheels and bumpers). Didn't even change the odd two-tone green interior, much less anything about the engine or chassis. I did detail the taillights with black and white paint, and the grille with black and steel. The black wash didn't come out perfectly and I might re-do that at some point. I painted the side marker lights. There was a nasty black streak on the paint on the left quarter panel which wouldn't come off with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover, so I had no choice but to try polishing it out with Wright's Silver Cream, which worked well. The paint could have probably stood up to a light polish overall with the Wright's but I didn't want to risk rubbing through anywhere, because I don't have anything close to touch it up with. It has a fairly decent, factory-like gloss that's tolerable. I'll live with it. I have 4 to 6 hours of work in it, all done in two days. At some point I might revisit the grille, and replace the wheels and tires with Mag 500s and something closer to stock-sized rubber, but for now, this one goes on the DONE list and and on the shelf. Ollie's strike again
Snake45 replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As I suspected, it was worth another trip back this week. Lots of Revell stuff that wasn't out last week. S&M GTX, 5.0 LX Mustang, Surfite, '55 Ford dragster, etc. I bought a GTX and a Dan Fink Speedwagon, a kit I've never gotten around to owning. -
Hobby Lobby made my day
Snake45 replied to thatz4u's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Happy happy joy joy! My HL had the Molotow markers! But I used my coupon this week on the Yenko '69 Corvette--they seem to have gotten several new kits in (nothing on clearance, though). Hopefully my chrome pen will still be there next week. -
1972 Missle Cuda and Duster builtups. What to do with them?
Snake45 replied to gtx6970's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Both of those look nice enough to me--at least in these pics--that I'd just clean them up and touch up/fix anything I just couldn't live with. Of course you know me and my "survivor restos." And then I'd drive on with some other project high on my To-Do list. You can always come back later and strip and completely redo them, if the mood takes you. Well, that's what I'D do, anyway, just since you asked. -
Wow, you really captured the look and feel and "attitude" of these things! Well done and model on!
-
I'd love to do a lineup of them someday. The one on the Shelf of Doom, I originally planned to do it in USAF camo but decided I didn't do a good enough job on it to warrant the work of that, so I'm just gonna squirt it Glossy Sea Blue as a generic early one. Then I'd like to do a 1964 1ACS USAF one flying with VNAF emblems, and maybe a true VNAF one, and maybe one of the USN EA-1Fs used for night interceptions over Vietnam in 1961. So many interesting ways to paint these fatfaces!

Very nice, and your finish is outstanding!

Nube Question: What products/process are you using to polish diecast?
Snake45 replied to tedd60's topic in Diecast Corner
I've done very little polishing on my diecasts, but when I have, I've used my regular beloved Wright's Silver Cream silver polish--available at Walmart--and it's worked great. The paint on diecasts, even the cheap ones, seems to be pretty tough stuff and stands up well to polishing. But, as always, VMMV. -
Beautiful! I have the MPC kit and the Slixx decals and plan to build this very model someday. You are an inspiration!

That thing looks somewhat like the trucks used to transport the crews on USAF flight lines. I think my Dad used to call them "bread trucks" and "meat wagons."

That's pretty nasty. Don't be a hater. -
´29 Ford Pickup.
Snake45 replied to Toni L.'s topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Very nice indeed! -
So true. As the real car guys say, "It's only original once." With the repainted white upholstery, it's no longer 100% original, but it's as close as I can stand to live with, and it's a happy relic of my youth.

I always right-clink and open threads in new tabs, then just click out when I'm done reading. This works well and I've never used the back button.
-
Anyone else experiencing a delay when clicking on a post etc?
Snake45 replied to Monty's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I have it too. Quite often the link "times out" before it comes up. First World problems. -
Fabulous! Drive on!

Painting moulded transmissions

I've done that too. And also their Aluminum. -

I've used that on molded-in chassis details. Works real well for exhaust pipes, too, if you want them fairly fresh looking. -
Source for convertible boot
Snake45 replied to Slotto's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Yeah. Convertible boots aren't hard to make. Closest kit part I can think of that might be adaptable would be AMT '69 GTX convertible boot. I don't think anyone ever did a '66-'67 midsize Mopar convertible kit. -
Beginners: Novus 2 really works!
Snake45 replied to dlh's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I might have to try Novus sooner or later. I've been very happy with Wright's Silver Cream silver polish, for both paint (including enamel) and plastic (including clear plastic) for 30 years or so now.
