My view on this has changed over the years. I used to avoid curbside kits, but now I’m fine with them. I can live with either way, although I still prefer to have an engine. The hobby has changed some of this too. With all the resin and 3d printed parts around now, it’s easier to fill the engine bay if you just have to have an engine in there.

Afternoon, gentlemen!

No more “bell” shaped blower cut out! I used styrene rod to fill most of it and filled the rest with Tamiya putty. Here it is after a coat of primer.

Quick update today. I haven’t had much modeling time because I’ve been practicing my butt off for my next jam session (tomorrow). The music has taken the front seat lately. But anyway, I decided I’m going to keep it simple (relatively) and use the nailhead that comes with the kit. They’re just cool engines, and I think it’ll look great. That being said, it’s going to get dressed up a bit. I drilled out the plug wire holes today and started assembling the pieces. I’ll either print my own distributor or use an aftermarket part I picked up a while back. Also, it’s getting new carbs. I just printed these today. Should look much nicer than the kit part. Haven’t decided which part I want to use on top of the carbs, so I printed two types. There are six sets here, but only three will be used on this build.

Tack / mist coat vs wet coat
atomicholiday replied to atomicholiday's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks for your input Bill. That makes sense, and confirms some of my suspicions. Especially regarding mist coats.? -
This is something I’ve always been a little confused about. You hear the these terms thrown around a lot when talking about painting. I Think it’s pretty clear what “wet” coats are, but not as much when talking about tack coats and mist coats. While I do understand their purpose, and that they are very thin, I’m not really sure how they should actually look when laying them down. Should a mist coat actually look dull and dry? Or should it appear wet, but just thinner than a true wet coat? I’ve been laying them down very thin and almost dry (still tacky though) but I’m wondering if that doesn’t cause more orange peel. Should they be wetter looking when they go on? i hope I’m being clear here. I have a feeling this will be a very subjective concept. Also, this can apply to either rattle cans or airbrush.

Agreed with what others have said above. One thing I’ve started doing different lately is fixing the seam on the oil pan, but leaving it on the transmission. Some 1:1 transmissions have a casting seam, so in my opinion leaving it visible on the plastic is acceptable. I will usually lightly sand it just to tone it down some, but leaving it visible. This only applies to the transmission though. The oil pan will always be fixed.
