What are the must-build classic kits?
atomicholiday replied to OldNYJim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Oh my... where's my chainsaw? Is there photo etch available for this kit? Seriously, there's a part of me that would be tempted. @CabDriver - great idea for a thread. I'm really enjoying seeing everyone's suggestions. Some are really taking me back to the beginnings of my model building days. -
You have a real knack for rhyming.

No offense taken at all. Your comment just provides an example of what I mean about the Monogram kit. It’s one of those models that you either love or hate.? It’s all nostalgia for me. I built a few as a kid and plan to do another over the next 1-2 years for comparison. And maybe relive a little of my youth.? -

My vote would be for just about any of the 70's era Monogram 1/24 scale car kits. Many of them are iconic and should be on this list. Some of the more iconic examples are the California Street Vette, any of their tri-five Chevys, and of course, the '69 Camaro. The Camaro in particular is a "must build" in my opinion. Everyone has an opinion about this one, both good and bad. No, it's not the most accurate representation, but it is definitely a fun kit to put together, and in recent years it seems to have overcome a lot of the negative hype surrounding it and is starting to be respected and loved for what it is. A great nostalgia build. Love it or hate it, just build it and see for yourself. -

Homebuilt Guitar Appreciation thread
atomicholiday replied to iamsuperdan's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Thanks Dan. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into this one. At one point, I almost scrapped the whole project. I spent three weeks hand-applying the polyurethane finish to the body. 30+ very thin coats, sanding everything level after every fifth coat. Then I let it cure for six weeks. After the sixth week, I unbolted it from the stand it was attached to so I could start wet sanding. Turned around and lost my grip on the body. On the way down, the body hit the metal corner of my bench, gouging it in two places, and then came to rest on the concrete floor, causing still more damage. To say I was upset would be a huge understatement. I tossed it on my bench and wouldn’t even look at it for two weeks. Then after calming down, I assessed the damage and started drop-filling the gouges. Believe it or not, you can’t tell anything even happened now. Total time to get the finish done ended up being around three months. -

That looks killer Jeremy. Also, thanks for reviving this thread. I’d never seen it before. Some great looking stuff has been posted! I’ve been building guitars since the mid 90’s. Here’s my last build from about a year ago. Got into amp building several years back too. I built this Mojo Tone 1 watt amp last. Love this thing! It’s like having a 1watt Marshall JCM900 -
1/32 Atlantis (ex-Monogram) Funny Car Kits

Too bad. Of all the cars from that series, those are the three I would be most interested in. Especially the mustang II. I have fond memories of that kit.
