1971 Pinto Wagon Street Freak Showcar - Done!! 4-18
Impalow replied to Impalow's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thank you all! Ive had a busy couple of weeks and sadly the Pinto's progress had suffered.. I was able to get the rest of the gold leaf done last night, its not perfect, but it was good practice for the body. Once its cleared and all the suspension is installed I think its going to be just fine. I had to relocate the distributor... some serious clearance issues with this giant engine. Now that its up top, I am not really happy with my distributor boots. While I was ordering the rod ends to complete the front steering from RBMotion, I picked up a set of their boots that will hopefully clean that issue up when they arrive.- 172 replies

Love it James! The paint looks great!

This looks awesome! maybe try a little dull-coat on that interior before you change it out? Ive always been amazed how the same or similar color looks in glossy/matte/dull colors.... Especially metallic and pearls... just a thought!

Thank you all for the kind words and words of encouragement! Martin, that means a lot! thank you! I have a conundrum, I did something new/different/insane and I'm not sure how I feel about it....or if i should continue. I read a couple articles on gold leafing, and decided to give it a go... Directly to a body it didn't work very well for me, I just had a hard time getting a nice crisp edge. So then I had an idea.... what if I leafed a sheet of BMF? Well that actually worked.. so then i cut thin strips and use them to outline panels, or whatever.. My issue is to keep the strips nice and straight, the strips have to be wider than I would like. Here is the sheet of gold bmf with the variegated gold leaf applied: here are the examples of a couple panels outlined. My first thought was too lowrider-y...but its growing on me for this kinda car. Any thoughts?- 172 replies

Thank you! I'm pretty sure that is the issue, the best looking one turned out to be about 1/4" high, and I have some 1/4" acrylic scraps laying around. Just going to cut some 3/8" strips and give it a try.. im lazy and that is easier than priming and painting..- 172 replies

Next up was the chassis... I wanted a nice bright blue, but with some pearl in it.. after searching a few stores for colors, I gave up and bought 9.00 worth of 1.00 nail polish from the dollar general and went all mad scientist with it. ( the spoon is the darker color metalflake I decided on for the panels) Mix it up in a jar and we are good to go: Chassis painted: While that was drying I sprayed the matte white on the interior pieces: Then came time for insanity... panel painting the chassis... I laid out the pattern with 3/16 hole punched vinyl and 1/8" masking tape. Then I laid BMF over the entire panel and cut and removed the center portion of BMF, tape and vinyl dots. ( I didnt get a great photo of this, but you can see the process a bit at the top of this photo) Painted with Testors Ice Blue, then fogged the edges with Tamiya Clear Blue Removal of masking. and done.- 172 replies

Thank you guys!! I haven't been around for awhile, but I have been making progress on this thing. Oh for sure! i love that stuff, it was a lucky find for sure! Here is a quick rundown of the last few weeks of progress: Started working on the plug wires, I was able to put a tiny small o-ring over each boot to simulate the hemi style boots. Next up was the transparent blue carb/blower scoop, i cut some wooden bucks and dropped them into the vacformer with some evergreen trans blue. and it was an epic fail.... the heat made the plastic lose color, and extremely brittle. So I tried some clear lexan, and success... but the texture of the MDF I used came through pretty bad. Going to get some acrylic and try again. Proof of concept... just needs more development.- 172 replies

PE dragster front wheel and tire set
Impalow replied to Psychographic's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
the HERB DEEKS EBAY centers are approx .575 OD and the Jaw breaker tires are about .777 ID.(don't quote me, the measurements are from memory, I'll double check when I get home) This made my rim lip a bit more chunky than I originally wanted. Jawbreaker tire on top to show size: Finished: Here are some of the Toms Model Works Airplane ones(Jawbreaker tire on top).. I still think these may work somehow, but the set #205 I ordered was way small. I would look at the #505 or #405's http://www.tomsmodelworks.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=231 -
Picked one of these up as a present for my dad, really nice tool seems to put the light right where you need it. 14.99 minus the 40% coupon its not a huge up-charge over the nicer handles out there either. Also the counterweight of the AAA battery may keep it from going blade down into your leg/foot when it rolls of the bench. http://xacto.com/products/cutting-solutions/knives/detail/X3279

very nice!! Love the retro BRE paint, the blue BRE 510 was always my favorite.

Just caught up on this... phenomenal work Tim! That tank is downright amazing! Cant wait to see what you do with the wheels!

Nice to see this back on the bench! It was good to see you this past weekend, glad the shoulder is healing up.

Thank you guys!! I made a little progress on the front end. Got the core support, valence, hood and the bumper all figured out. Carving out the core support for a more skeletal look: Cut and boxed the core support, then drilled for the bumper/ Cut the front of the hood off approx 1/2" back, then glued it in place. Smoothed and rounded all the corners and drilled out the headlights. I think i'm going to turn my own moon tank that's a bit smaller in diameter than the detail master one. Ideally I would like to not cut the bumper for the tank and stash it behind the grill area, we shall see if that works. That 427 Cammer is long, and has a lot of stuff sticking off the front.- 172 replies

Oh yeah!! those look really nice too! I think I even put a set on my last order from norm.. duh... i totally forgot -
I was looking into these centers: http://www.tomsmodelworks.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22_30&products_id=231 However I never ordered them... part of me thinks there has to be a set of scale airplane wire wheels that could work. Machined Aluminum Specialties had sets at NNL East that i decided to pass up..... regretted that decision as soon as i got home. Finally I settled into the herb deeks wheels for my build.... the rims did get a bit thick for my liking, if i had to do it again i would try and find another source for a larger diameter center. These are the 17" front tires from the JawBreaker Kit, herb deeks centers off eBay and machined other bits.

Thank you guys! I'm really stoked about how this entire thing is coming together!! Last night I reinforced the resin body with some 1/16" brass square tube. Then cut up the wheelwells... I was really glad at this point I added the brass tube.. not much meat left Finished the other side and had to do a mockup... Im pretty excited! Over the next couple days I'm gonna work out the front end, roll pan, bumper and moon tank... etc.- 172 replies

thanks ray! im pretty happy with them! Got the transparent blue sprayed on the interior panels, pulls off the sparkly vinyl look pretty decent I think... I have a new body! thanks to Kris Morgan from M.A.D.! I wasn't crazy about the look of the square headlight pinto, and honestly 1979 is a bit too new to be a Gasser/street freak style car. Plus couldn't wrap my head around how to do a moon tank with those giant bumpers. So the transkit to back date the pinto solved a lot of problems! After a little work i got it to fit my chassis pretty good, I'm going to reinforce the inside of the sides with some small brass tubing, they are already concaving a bit from a top view, and I know cutting up those rear wheel wells will only make that worse.. luckily there is a lot of room between the body and the interior bucket to epoxy some thing to keep things straight and durable.- 172 replies

Yeah rob! It will actually do a 180 degree just fine, I have even wrapped it around an x-acto handle 360 with no issues... I love the stuff, it was a lucky find.- 172 replies
