Your Very First Real Car
Joe Handley replied to FujimiLover's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Heres one of the last pics of my first car, an '85 Lebaron GTS Turbo, bought it with 101k on the clock in '95 for $2300 and scrapped in 8 years later in early 2004 with 150k on the clock. I jumped the timing belt and it ran well enough to get home and ended up replacing it for good with the Cherokee I'm currently driving because the car was so rusty. It was a decently reliable, suprisingly fast little car that was also fairly easy for me to work on. It's also the only FWD car my Dad has ever driven that he could actually trusted to push hard and even gave a few guys in a then new mid 90's Impala SS (with loud exhaust and cross flags on the front fenders) a serious run for their money, Dad just doesn't know how fast they were going since the speedo only went to 85 MPH but the guys in the Impala were looking at him awful funny My little sister even drove it during high school and when of her friends and co-worker announced that his '91 Caprice was "The Beast" (yup, all 305ci of TBI thunder ), another friend and co-worker told him "Your car isn't "The Beast", Nicki's is!" Wouldn't mind finding another, this was a pretty fun and stealthy car! -

I guess depending on how you look at it, since it's our money that funded this program, wouldn't those be our cars? -
It wouldn't be the first time I've seen a 40-41 Willys like that......................

Yup, definately a model.............I'd bet it was done by a spectacularly talented european modeler with a taste for unusual subjects based off american cars too Aha!!! That's how you spell his name! That car just looks alot like his other unusual subject matter builds. -

I saw this one in person at the World of Wheels in Chicago this past January, it's.......different and took a boat load of work, but just not my cup of tea (with or without the LSD chaser.) Maybe had it not been based on a pickup cab and the engine sat lower than the cowl, then I would probably feel different about it. -
Very cool!

That was an Escalade, one of the early ones IIRC. Then again, the "client" wanted exotics (don't know what's so exotic about a tarted up Tahoe though) and Cherokees are pretty much a dime a dozen. And Harry, my neighbors still have one of those '89 Camery's it's a wagon and in not so good of shape. I think it might be one of a couple left in the area too. -

Real, but I think the windshield and rims may have some kind of touch up work done to them. -

There was a Cherokee used in "Gone in 60 Seconds" BTW, theere was a cop chasing Elenor through the Dock in one until a wrecking ball knocked it throuhg a brick wall. IIRC it was doing a decent job hanging with her too The best way to tell that's not a C4C list is the severe lack of Ford Explorers, at one point 6 out of the 10 vehicles listed were either TTB or IFS and Live axle/leaf spring equiped Explorers with the Grand CHerokee, Cherokee, '99 Caravan, and '97 Windstar rounding out the list. I'm figuring with all those Explorers off the road, driving just got a whole lot safer for the rest of us................. -
How good a driver are you?
Joe Handley replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No arguements from me there! Well, that would explain the suden $9.00 jump in my insurance premium last month. -

No kidding, all it tells me is that I have a 40% chance of getting hit by another drunk driver if I get in another wreck. IIRC here in Illinois you should wear bright/light colors cloths (white, yellow, prison jump suit orange, ect) and walk against the flow of traffic on the shoulder. Now if you're on bicycle, you should wear the same types of cloths, but you have to ride with the flow of traffic and stay over to teh right side of the road. Personally I like sidewalks, I grew up around here and took driver's ed here so I know better than to trust most of these licensed knuckeheads. -

No wonder these questions half didn't make any sense, they were written by an insurance company or the insurance industry. -
Only one reason I can think of, those are way cooler looking than anything that is competitively today. I'd still like to get my hands on a pre OBD2 and airbag 2wd 4.0l Jeep Cherokee to make a modern day gasser out of, all you'd need to get the look are some nice fat 30" tall tires out back, skinnies up front, a slight lift (ACOS adjustable bumpstop with 4 cyl springs up front and Up Country leaf springs out back), then start playing with the stock I-6 (stroker ) or maybe bump it up to a V-8 at some point (easier to do with the 2wd anyway, no front diff and driveshaft to get in the way ) Yes, I have thought it throuhg that much

Looks good and I'm digging the vented rotors.

We got a couple of those in at work the other day and both sold today!
