I had the distinct and exciting pleasure of seeing Darryl Starbird actually drive the Predicta around in ordinary traffic. I grew up in Wichita and happened to see him driving the Predicta to a photo shoot in Oak Park, where many of its best photo portraits and magazine pictorials were shot.

I'm never disappointed. I always expect mine when it is in the mailbox. They are very consistent in that. I always sure it will be here and when it is, that's when I expect it. Cover dates mean nothing. I pay for 9 issues a year and I get 9 issues a year. Each one takes longer to read than two or three issues of the other one together. I'm not disappointed. I guess it's all about personal expectations, but I don't expect magazines to have due dates like ... say, ... a newspaper. I would, obviously, be disappointed in a daily newspaper if it skipped a few days and didn't deliver the news until the end of the week. But of course that's a whole other discussion and has no bearing on hobby entertainment publication subscription expectations. And also, I quit subscribing to printed newspapers years ago because I learned to expect daily news from 24-hour resources such as the internet. Bottom line, it's all about personal preferences and expectations. I guess the majority aren't terribly offended, since there are still thousands of subscribers and renewals seem to happen.

Desert Scale Classic 11 Show and Class Rules 2015 ALL ENTRIES MUST BE AUTOMOTIVE TYPE ONLY. ENTRIES MUST BE THE SOLE WORK OF THE NAMED ENTRANT. No Aircraft, Military Armored Vehicles, Military Boats, or Remote Control Vehicles allowed. Models must be registered and all fees paid prior to being displayed on Contest Tables. All entries in Classes A-1 through A-23 must be 1/24 – 1/25 SCALE. All entries 1/26 or smaller in size will be placed only in Class A-24. All entries 1/23 scale or larger in size will be placed only in Class A-25. Classes A-26 through A-29 are open to any scale. *Desert Scale Classic defines ‘Street Legal’ as meaning an entry must have and clearly display all equipment a full sized (1:1) vehicle would be required to have in order to be operated legally on public streets, roads, and highways. An entry must have head and tail lights, signals, windshield, windshield wipers, treaded tires, brakes, mufflers, and license plate. Entries may be displayed on bases not to exceed 2 inches wider and 4 inches longer than the model. Entries displayed on larger bases, or depicting a scene, will be placed in Diorama Class A-27. The judging staff reserves the right to move entries to different classes and/or open additional classes. Decisions of the judges are final. Entries removed from contest tables prior to the Awards Ceremony will not be judged or receive any awards and entry fees will not be refunded. A4 NOSTALGIA DRAG Entries must be 1974 and earlier competition drag cars or trucks. Includes Dragsters, Funny cars, Gassers, Altereds, Roadsters, and Doored cars. A5 COMPETITION DRAG – DOOR CARS Entries must be 1975 and later full-bodied drag cars or trucks. Includes Stock, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Pro Stock, Pro Mod, or Funny Cars. A6 COMPETITION DRAGSTER Entries must be 1975 and later Top Fuel dragsters, Altereds, Roadsters, Comp dragsters, Sand dragsters, or Land speed cars. A7 COMPETITION CIRCUIT TRACK Entries must be competition vehicles that compete on any closed circuit paved course. Examples: NASCAR, INDY, TRANS-AM, IMSA, SCCA, Rolex Grand Am, Formula 1, Vintage, etc. A8 COMPETITION OFF-ROAD Entries must be competition vehicles that compete on any non-paved closed circuit course. Examples: Dirt Oval, Rally, Baja, Stadium racing, Hill Climbers. A9 REPLICA Entries must depict a specific car, truck or specialty vehicle. Entries must be displayed with documentation of the subject vehicle, such as Books, Photos, Brochures, Magazines, etc. Principal judging criteria for this class will be fidelity of the Entry to the subject vehicle. A10 CURBSIDE Entries will be judged on exterior appearance only. Entries will not be picked up, chassis and undercarriage will not be judged. Windows may be blacked out or covered; interiors will not be judged. Exposed engines or interiors (convertibles, roadsters) are not permitted. A11 VOLKSWAGENS Any Volkswagen or Volkswagen powered vehicle, (e.g Dune Buggy). A12 BOX STOCK Entries must be built “OUT OF THE BOX” in this class. Entries must be displayed with the complete instruction sheet for the model entered. Any type of paint, chrome foil, or decals are permitted. No kitbashing or parts swapping from other kits is permitted. No aftermarket detail parts may be used. A13 FACTORY STOCK Entries must depict a street legal* vehicle produced by a manufacturer anywhere in the world for sale to the general public. The model must maintain the stock body panels as produced by the factory. All parts on the model must be parts that were made for that car by that manufacturer. Aftermarket parts and parts from other kits are permitted so long as they were produced for that make of car. Dealer-added options or accessories are permitted. The Entry must have a factory-correct paint job. The Entry may be built to depict any phase of the car’s life - new, old, still running, distressed, or junker. Paint may be faded, chipped, or worn to the primer or bare metal as long as some factory paint is present on the Entry. In the case of a junker, the Entry may have missing parts, hub caps, chrome trim, engine, or seat, as long as some factory paint still exists on the model. A14 CUSTOMS Entries must have significant body modifications to create a vehicle with a unique or personalized appearance. Modifications typically include changes in the shape of the body and/or other visual aspects of the vehicle, such as channeling, sectioning, chopping, or reconfiguring. Wheel/tire changes and/or custom paint alone are not sufficient to qualify for Customs class. In addition to modified kits, the Customs class includes models of show rods and customs built with or without modifications of show rod or custom kits. A15 STREET ROD 1 Entries must be modified automobiles of American manufacture from 1905 to 1938 body style. Body styling must be retained as it came from the manufacturer. Slight customizing to the body is permitted. The engine, interior, chassis, tires, wheels & paint are open to the builder. Entries must be street legal.* A16 STREET ROD 2 Entries must be modified automobiles of American manufacture from 1939 to 1948 body style. Entries must be street legal.* A17 EARLY STREET MACHINES Entries must be modified automobiles from 1949 to 1969. Entries must be street legal.* A20 PICKUPS Entries must be any non-commercial pickup truck or pickup-based vehicle, one-ton or less, including El Caminos, Rancheros, utes, etc., whether stock or modified in configuration, except competition vehicles. Entries must be street legal.* A21 LIGHT COMMERCIAL Entries must be commercial vehicles of any configuration, one-ton or less, except competition vehicles, and must carry equipment or markings clearly identifying the vehicles as primarily for commercial use. Entries must be street legal.* A22 HEAVY COMMERCIAL Entries must be commercial vehicles of any configuration, larger than one-ton rating, except competition vehicles, and must carry equipment or markings to be clearly identified as primarily for commercial use. Includes all semis, all big rigs, and fire apparatus greater than two-ton rating. Entries must be street legal.* A23 EMERGENCY VEHICLES Entries must be law enforcement, public safety, fire service, medical response, or rescue vehicles of federal, state, county, or municipal agencies employed for emergency responses.
