Days of Thunder Sequel Maybe
Brian Austin replied to Leo64's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Was there an earlier Niki Lauda film? I have a foggy memory of a magazine write-up of the filming of a crash scene using a mockup pulled along by a cable. This would have been a few decades ago. -
Days of Thunder Sequel Maybe

Would be funny if the race driver was once a fighter pilot. Wasn't Days O' Thunder filmed partially during an actual race? -
Any of you collect vintage food?

Stores do use the Sell By dates to make sure products are properly rotated on the shelf. I do wonder if manufacturers would like to be considered liable for outdated food. Do food banks accept outdated foods? -

I also found this can in the same cabinet. I like the graphics. I don't know how often they changed their copyright, but the date shown on the can is just a few years after my family moved into our home (now mine). I wonder how much it's worth. Is there a collectors guide somewhere? ? Can says it's cultured. The buttermilk must have gone to the opera, taken in some art exhibits and studied classical music. -

Here's the package of Jello that touched off this thread. The funny thing is, as a vintage object with graphics, the cover art doesn't grab me. The flavor (artificial, even!) doesn't excite me either. ? Sadly it's not worth the big bucks in this condition. It's also not worth my time to consider listing it on eBay. ? Instant pudding? I don't have time for that.... -

The Wayside Country Store I mentioned above is interesting in that it, along with some other historical properties, was once owned by Henry Ford, who had it moved to its present location by oxen and reassembled. The store does have some interesting old knickknacks on display, and they do sell actual present-day penny candy. The antique candy is not for sale. ? -

On display at the Wayside Country Store in Massachusetts, they have some genuine antique candy, over a century at this point. Does it look appetizing? (Seen here in 2013). -
Here's a genuine antique unopened tin of SPAM. Ebay listing You could wash it down with this unopened bottle of Gatorade. Ebay listing There appears to be a thriving market for "unused food". https://picclick.com/Popular/vintage-unopened-food I found an unopened package of JELLO pudding mix in my kitchen cabinet apparently dating from the 1980s. The box has a crease in it, so it's probably not worth much. ?

What did you see on the road today?

I saw parked a Soviet-era UAZ 4x4 4dr ragtop. I was thinking about taking a picture but two teenagers jumped in and drove off. Had Vermont plates. -

Relax. It's just one car, built to the owner's taste. It wasn't built for us. Customized cars used to be called "personalized". Somehow that got lost along the way. An "aesthetic improvement" ? I'm not sure if that might have been the goal, but he sure made it unique. ? Funny you guys get hung up on cars like this, when at a car show I'd pay more attention to this one than all the stock Fords of its type on the field. Conformity can be boring. ?

Why do old TV shows on DVD look stretched horizontally?
Brian Austin replied to LDO's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
4:3 was a common film format ratio, in both still and movie types. Throughout the middle 20th century wider screen formats of various sizes were introduced to compete with home TV viewing, along with other gimmicks such as 3-D. According to this article, movies were broadcast on television as early as the 1930s and '40s. https://pictureshowman.com/what-and-when-was-the-first-movie-shown-on-television/ -
Article from Arab News: Taif festival showcases vintage cars AIF: Sixteen vintage cars were shown to visitors in the first “Like the Old Days” festival at the Al-Kur Entertainment Resort. The cars were displayed Saturday for the oldest manufactured cars, in cooperation with the Ali Al-Sherif Museum. They are different model vintage cars, and some are more than 70 years old. One elderly gentleman was so excited that he inspected the cars one by one, looking inside, opening the hood and inspecting the wheels. One of the oldest cars, with which everyone was impressed, was a model made in 1965 and a 1966 type with its sides and box made from Iraqi wood. Another was a 1960 model made that year, in addition to others, with one from 1977. The Taif Investment and Tourism Company launched the festival in cooperation with the Tourism Development Council, linking visitors and holidaymakers, showing them the history of Taif, moving away from the traditional summer events and introducing new entertainment activities. The festival, which continues till next month, has many activities that are of historical nature related to traditional neighborhoods, historical markets, bedouin handicrafts, popular foods, heritage competitions, customs and traditions highlighted by the people of Taif who are interested in historical aspects of society.

I recently went down the Tally Hall rabbit hole. They released two albums and then went on an extended hiatus. This song is from their debut album, Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum, which apparently had been re-recorded and re-released one or two times. The editing of this video is impressive.
