1969 Nascar Champion David Pearson
bobss396 replied to jjsipes's topic in Stock Cars (NASCAR, Super Stock, Late Model, etc.)
Outstanding build. The colors are just right, decals too. IMO he was better than Petty, as he only ran partial schedules, Petty rarely missed a race. -
Do you also have 1:1 project cars?
bobss396 replied to ctruss53's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The seats are DONE. Even the arm rests look great. So far I have the arm rests on... but the driveway is in full sun. My buddy is coming over around 5 to help with the seats. All I need is to get some of the front bolts started Even the pool is on the warm side at 85. -
Chopped 1934 Ford 5 window coupe body
bobss396 replied to krassandbernie's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I have a lot of old resin bodies around, from Ed, a Ron Cash chopped '40 Ford and so on. Also a flawless '48 Ford coupe from Perry's Resin. He made great stuff, haven't seen him around in at least 15 years. Modelhaus, he made more later products, he is still kickin' but no longer casting. His son took over the wheel and tire business. -
I like it a lot... great concept and execution. I wonder if the '59 kit would also work.. I have a few of those.

model kit production question
bobss396 replied to jphillips1970's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I had grabbed the ear of one of the Atlantis guys at the NNL East. I have a vision of a stock car series, short track stuff. I ran it by him and he flatly said they would not be interested. -
Now I recall, my dad had one started. The OG 1961 issue, he got maybe 1/2 way done with it. The car is long gone, but I still have the box.

I built a couple, newer than yours. The last was likely the 1969 issue. Nice to see an old one done up right.

I'm doing well approaching 70 next year. I got taken off Lipitor recently, my cholesterol numbers are good, so is everything else. It took some time from 2016 when I was a hot mess. Before my heart attack, my BP was like 180/100. It takes 3 meds to get it down. The trick is to KEEP MOVING. One friend of mine, her dad retired at age 66, basically parked himself in front of the TV and withered away in just 2 years. I got the old cars, keeping up with trimming things outside and a vegetable garden. I came close to NOT doing the garden, but worked through terrible back pain to get 'er done. I have had a garden every tear since 1984, even when I rented me and the landlord had one going. I believe that getting moving got me past my lower back issues. This has been a plague to me off and on since I was around 24.

I built one when the kit first came out, brush painted Testors purple... by brush. I built the NASCAR-ish version of it.
-
I like it a lot. For me.... I'd start out to make an OOB one... but it would likely take a nasty turn somewhere and wind up BACK IN THE BOX. Just like my other 25 stalled projects.

Very nice work, I have one I started, took some time to get the roof and body seams.. seamless. I should dig it out. The last one I built was around 1964.

Organizing Aftermarket parts

BJs has some good potato salad containers that are handy. The lids stay on well. I have one I keep all my glues in, in case I have a spill it gets contained. Rubber Maid from the supermarket is also good for parts and in-process builds. -
1951 Chevy Figure 8 Stock Car
bobss396 replied to bobss396's topic in WIP: Stock Cars (NASCAR, Super Stock, Late Model, etc.)
Thanks gents, I'm going slow since I bought the '66 Belair in late May. I put away a lot of what I had out on my "bench", aka the dining room table. I ran into one snag on the '51... the cage is about 2 mm too high and hits the roof... BACK IN THE BOX. I'd also like to get the front a little lower, as in getting the interior tub/firewall deeper into the body. The '56 Ford I'm doing has better fit issues. -
The "waste-not-want-not" Starliner project
bobss396 replied to customline's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I have a '62 Ford glue bomb I did a lot of work on, I used the supplied chassis. It looks pretty good and is just short of foil and final assembly. I'm on the fence with the final engine choice. I got the kit 390 looking decent, also built up the '65 Ford 427. It won't go to waste. I have a VCG Resins stock 352 as well. But for now... BACK IN THE BOX.... -
I try to avoid anything sharp at all. I have plenty of .020" brass and some odd pieces of stainless wire. I have used the tape trick and it works.

Organizing Aftermarket parts
bobss396 replied to iBorg's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have most in those plastic shoe boxes. One is "opened" stuff, sorted by part type. Another is "new", again sorted the same way. Then have "street rod" parts, then decals, stock car, stock car wheels, and wheels/tires. I have smaller boxes of roll cage related items. Lately with all the 3D parts, I have those sorted as well, by engine/transmission, chassis, headers etc. All in the same-size plastic boxes (that stack) from hobby lobby. I try to avoid having TOO many boxes to sort through. I think my total is about 12. -
With steering columns, I rarely use the kit supplied one. I use either Evergreen rod or aluminum tube. The tube is preferred so I don't have to paint it. I don't use the "notch" it fits into. I use plastic channel or a piece of .010" aluminum. I have it so it "plugs" into the floor. This way I can fine-tune the column length at assembly if need be.

The "waste-not-want-not" Starliner project
bobss396 replied to customline's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I like how this is going, nice progress. The 1958 Ford was also quite the rust bucket, this is likely why few are around. My neighbor had one, a white and red 4 door, man did that go south real quick. It was really nice when they got it and the rot was dummied up... they had no clue. -
I got all the old rain gutter caulk removed on July 3rd and into the 4th. I just finished it up with the new caulk and washed the car. I have to prime and paint next, touch up paint is on order. I have the new transmission filter and fluid, this I will do at a buddy's shop. I should have the "new" seats back this week. Today I will continue to work on cleaning the carpet, etc before it gets too hot out. By 9, the driveway is in full sun. For the thumb, my girlfriend had her carpal tunnel surgery done and I will use the same surgeon. My right pinky was broken maybe around 1974 and I never did much about it. The one joint has a click to it. Then I injured it in 2022... it will lock up on me. But little pain. I went to PT I guess in 2019 for my back and neck issues. I told them no bouncy-ball or I am out of there. It really was of zero help. This PT practice was big into section-8 patients, the waiting room was full of them. I guess medicaid fueled that endeavor. They had a chiropractor on staff... famous for his 3-minute adjustments.

Friendly loveable Squirrels..
bobss396 replied to A modeler named mike's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I would love me some chippies. Like I have said, we have seen just 1 around. The north shore, everyone has them in abundance. I helped my buddy re-home some rabbits recently. They were digging holes in the middle of his back lawn, this guy is a bug about his yard. It took a while to trap the 2nd one, we took them over the bay bridge where they will have lots of company. I have 2 and they are happy with eating my clover.
