That's an ancient kit and it's in bad need of a decent replacement but you've turned it into a thing of beauty. Cool idea, excellent execution and I love the color. robw

That is going to be a magnificent model. robw

The subtle level of wear and weathering that you've added to this kit instantly draws and holds your attention. Well done. robw

Great job on a model that seems to rarely be built. RobW

Heard on the media this weekend that Bernie apparently wanted a guarantee of $175 million over a five year period and the mayor of Montreal was thinking it should be something more like $50 million. The Montreal organizers were also unable to find a major private sponsor to help defray costs. The mayor blamed Bernie for being unwilling to bend and commented that he guessed Bernie didn't realize that there was a world wide financial crisis going on. The race is clearly done for for '09 but they wouldn't speculate after that. My guess is that we'll never see it back in Canada and that Bernie will line up some other country that has never had a history or passion for auto racing but has mega bucks to hand over. I've been a dedicated fan and TV watcher of F1 for years but this just about does it for me. I'll just start sleeping in instead of getting up at 5am to catch it live, something that Bernie doesn't want the European fans to have to do but doesn't seem concerned that North American fans have to do. I have one of these (for about two years now) and I'm very happy with it. It's variable speed running from 5 grand to 25 grand. Runs on a Lithium-Ion battery. Decided to see how long a charge would last and I haven't had it on the charging dock since early in the summer. No sign of loss of power yet but I rarely used it at any of the higher speeds. Read a posting on another board that someone had had the battery go bad but mine has been great. It handles easilly and fits my hand. I've put my old conventional dremel away and it may never come out again. robw

Just checked both my email accounts and the IPS provided filter and no email arrived here.......that is unless Gregg is posting as the Bank of America or is willing to solve all my debt problems. Hey Gregg do you have something against we Canucks? Rob W

What made you return to building?
robertw replied to Uncle Mike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My story is a little odd or maybe even depressing but here goes. I've built models since the mid 50's, mostly cars during my early teen years, but in the late '60's I got into aircraft and stayed exclusively with that type of modelling till the early '90s. In '91 my father passed away after a short illness. His death made me realize how short life could be and that it was time to fulfill some of my long held wishes, while I still had time. The big one was a long held wish to own a sports car. During my search for a car I started to again look at car models in my LHS and within a year I was hooked on building only plastic with four wheels. (The sports car wish was fulfilled in '94 when I bought a Corvette). Rob W -
Spike, Old enough to be retired but not old enough to be collecting a government old age pension but if I were, the money would be going to support my hobby. Been building since the late 1950's and hope to continue as long as I can. Modelling has led to meeting and becoming friends with a lot of fine people over my life, has helped me to develop a strong interest in the study of history, certainly kept me out of other activities which would not have been good for me (I'd prefer to spend my disposable income on plastic then buy booze, drugs & smokes), taught me the life skills of patience and numerous fine motor skills. I came to the conclusion many years ago that "every model planned and built is an experience in solving problems". Another modelling friend likes to quote da Vinci, "model building is being able to hold history in your hands". Don't let anyone try to convince you that building scale models is not a worthwhile activity at any age. robw

Have a question concerning an AMT Promo Model?
robertw replied to a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It was Bill Mitchell and according to the story told by Larry Shinoda, after the design studio had painted the car several times and each time being told by Mitchell that they hadn't gotten it right they stole the fish one weekend and painted it to match the car. According to Shinoda Mitchell never caught on to what had been done or at least never let on that he'd been had. robw -
Good work, neat little car, love the colour. I finished the modern equivalent of the Cooper this summer and finally managed to find one of these Tamiya kits a month ago. Looking forward to it as a winter build. While I was originally considering green your metallic blue one has really attracted my interest in a similar colour. Robw

That looks good and it looks as Italian as a bottle of Chianti until you lift the hood or look underneath to see its Kentucky Burbon roots. robw

The dealer that I buy my Corvette promos from has been told that there will be '57 Corvette promos this coming year. Since the only '57 Vette that Revell has access to is the old Monogram kit in 1/24th it will either mean modifying that tool into a snap style kit or creating a new one. Thought I'd just add to the speculation but as the old saying goes, "where there's smoke, there's fire". There may be interesting kits coming in the future for all of us. robw

Mac-Tac or Shelf paper, as John calls it. I've picked up rolls with two different sized squares. The dollar style stores always seem to have the best variety of this material. You'll also find material that is supposed to resemble marble in several different colors. I've even cut this up into squares to create a high class marble style floor. I've also used this stuff on many of my finished model shelves. It looks a lot classier then bare wood. robw

Very nice. Glad to hear that it goes together so well, it's on my build list for the coming winter. robw

With a car like that you can hide out on Lambo car lots. LOL Since the roof is going to be black anyway why not go for the new ZR1 look and do the roof in carbon fibre decal. I'm going to look forward to seeing this one done. Rob W

These classic cars are fun to build and I'm glad to see another one come out of "stash". Maybe Revell will decide to reissue the whole Monogram series. There is a number of them that I never got but would like to try building now. Well done. RobW

Been looking forward to seeing this one finished but the wait has certainly been worth it. Well done, Marc. RobW

Very nice build. Like others I have fond memories of an experience with this generation of Firbird. My brother had an '83 and we did a cross country camping trip through the Canadian Rockies in it. We still laugh about having to use the 'bird one night to tie our tent to because the ground was to rocky to pound pegs into. You've built a model to be proud of. RobW

During the '70's the aftermarket produced a kit to build the white car. You'll still occasionally see one of them at Corvette shows. While not my choice, the design was done fairly well and the car is not really offensive in its appearance. The red car appears to be a personal design and build and is just plain unattractive. Thanks for posting. Rob W

Now you need to build some "ratty old" cars to park inside it. You've done a great job and it looks very realistic. I'm assuming that you used real wood to do the siding because it sure looks like old wood. robw

Have both the Revell AG and US Revell kits and looking forward to building one or both of them. At the much lower price of Revell kits who needs the high priced Japanese kits. I also just got the KA Models P/E set for this kit which includes metal blades to replace the thicker plastic ones in the grill. It also includes a lot of nice p/e for the interior much of which will be lost through the thick side windows (may have to cut them out). robw

Go Ron Go ! ..........oops I mean Brendan. A nice job of a very special race car. I ordered the decals as soon as I heard they were being produced but haven't started on the kit yet. I'd welcome this model on my shelf any day, well done. RobW

"Holy Grail" Models?
robertw replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Like many older modelers finding models that I built in my youth is always exciting although I'm usually disappointed by their poor quality if I find them. I hunt them more for the enjoyment of being able to look at them again rather then a desire to build them so I'm not that interested in paying collector prices. As for holy grails? Any old Corvette kit that I don't already have is on that list and there are still a few of the AMT/mpc ones from the '60's that I don't have. Some of the old resin kits are the real treasures to find and I cursed Izzy a couple of years back when he told me he'd gotten the Aardvark resin for the Corvette SS. (LOL) He returned the the curse last year when I scored a restorable Scuderia Scale Stingray Racer which has been high on both our holy grail lists. I find that the hunt for these old treasures is the most satisfying aspect and when I find one I'm often torn as to whether to build or keep, ya that makes me as much a collector as a builder. We are living in one of the best of modelling times and I'm looking forward to reissued kits from Lindberg/Hawk and a reborn AMT to give me some of the kits from my youth. Rob W -
Love the paint job, black and white can be hard to get right and you got it perfect. Really like the red/black interior with all those CF touches that make this such a unique build. Glad to see that you went to the extra work of creating the dry sump oil system. I can't think of anything I don't like about your build, well done! Rob W
