There's one of mine in that photo: headers that don't match the engine they're mounted on e.g. SBC headers on a head with equally spaced ports (Hemi, Ford) and vice versa. Others are plug wires that look more like heater hoses and plug wires routed to the wrong place. If you're going to add wires, at least fit them properly.

Real scratchbuilding, that's impressive! -
'79 Ford F-350 improvements
dodgefever replied to 62rebel's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the old AMT Bronco had the grille moulded open - whether it fits the F350 cab, I can't remember. The Bronco hood also has the F O R D lettering, but I do remember that it doesn't fit the pickup cab very well. Probably not much help... Since you have a 1:1, can you clear up the issue of the wheelbase and wheelwell locations on the bed? I read something about the kit representing a camper special and therefore not being accurate for a regular F350. Is that just referring to the spare wheel housing, or are there other differences? -
Help bidding on ebay
dodgefever replied to Hypermung's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I can understand sellers wanting to protect themselves by only offering Priority shipping, but I'm not paying $35 shipping on a $15 kit. I'll just forget it and move on to the next one. If I'm buying something rare or expensive, I'll pay the extra for Priority, but for run of the mill stuff, I'll only buy from someone who offers First Class shipping. Then, if it goes missing, I knew the risk and I accept the loss. That's only happened once, and it was around Christmas, when the mail is busier, more casual workers are employed and things are more likely to be lost or stolen - lesson learnt, I avoid buying at that time of year. I lost out, but even so, one loss of $25 doesn't look bad compared with paying an extra $15 - 20 every time for Priority mail. -
That's really nice. Beautiful paint.

Nice work. If it matters, the trans in the AMT Nova is actually a Powerglide. You could cut the pan off and stick a TH350 shaped one on there and it'll look OK from underneath. As mentioned, the Monogram '70 TA has a TH350, as does the Monogram Chevy van. There may be others, those are the only ones I've come across...

I've ordered form them once, because their prices were OK and their shipping costs to the UK was much less than the other sites I compared with. The order was slow being picked, as others have mentioned, but I'd still order from them again.

Do you remember "BIG AL" ?
dodgefever replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
RIP. Interesting that it says he scored a rare Allison that rotated the same way as an auto engine... there was a feature on Lytle in R&C about 20 years ago with some good photos of Big Al and in there it said he'd got a Pontiac rearend turned upside down to compensate for the Allison's reverse rotation. -

What a nice man. Got to prevent those old kits from getting out of the country, eh? Fortunately there are still reasonable people prepared to send to us poor unfortunates who happen to live outside the US. {edit} I sincerely hope with that attitude that you never buy anything from outside the United States? -
If you do it the way I suggested, you'd only have to add a strip of plastic to fill the gap between the trunk and the rear window. If you just chopped it at the pillars, rear window and all, you'd then have to lengthen the roof, which is more difficult and doesn't look as good to me.
-
I would try to keep the rear window close to the original size - cut out the whole rear window frame out first, in one piece. Then chop the top and move the rear window frame forwards; trimming the rear of the roof if need be.. That looks better IMO than a simple chop with the rear window cut down. I did a quick hack job on you photo to illustrate:

Don't get the AMT '61 Ford Galaxie
dodgefever replied to '08SEAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well said, Art. I'd be happy to see more '60s AMT and MPC kits reissued. As it happens, I just got the '61 yesterday. I plan to bash it with the '60 to make a full detail '61 Starliner. -
The instructions are on the DPMCC site here: http://public.fotki.com/drasticplasticsmcc/instruction_sheetsh/instruction_sheets/amt-8/amt-1966-chevrolet-/#media Looks like a Ford FE (in a Nova? ), but doesn't even have a distributor?

What kit has a good Ford 427 SOHC?
dodgefever replied to Patrick2005's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Nice job on that. The Jo-Han one looks much better than any of AMT's efforts, but I see they still got the plugs in the wrong place on the passenger side. The covers are not symmetrical on the 1:1 -
5 model cars or trucks you wish were made.

Let's see: '64 Dodge CSS pickup - in plastic, I know about the resin kit '68 Coronet R/T or Superbee '57/8 Ranchero, not the old Revell kit '57 Buick '57 Olds -

Couldn't find the covers, but I came across a work in progress photo in my Photobucket album. I hadn't done the plug holes yet, but they had been reshaped. Shown with a stock AMT cover, which is from either the '66 Galaxie or the '68 Shelby Mustang. -
Dukes of Hazzard what ifs . . .
dodgefever replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
300 that wouldn't have been wrecked if not for a TV show... sorry, but buying up cars just to stuff them into the ground and wreck them is beyond stupid. Being in a TV show or movie isn't one of my criteria for a car being cool either; I'll admit that Bullitt made the Charger look good, but DoH does just the opposite IMO. If anything, it would put me off owning a '69 because I couldn't deal with people asking me when I was going to paint it orange. -
Agreed. I'll be giving the "half-reissue" a miss.

UK or EU Distributor for current US Kits
dodgefever replied to Junkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've bought the odd thing from him, but his website is a complete nightmare. If he removed all the "SOLD OUT SORRY" clutter, that would be a start... I don't need to know what he hasn't got. -
UK or EU Distributor for current US Kits
dodgefever replied to Junkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wish I knew where you could pick up current issue kits for a reasonable price. I just keep an eye on Ebay and hope to pick up the odd one from a private seller for £10 or less. I can't believe anybody buys those I keep seeing listed for nearly £30. It must be nearly a year since I bought any direct from the US - I bought eight at once and after shipping and import charges, they worked out about £18 each. Before I quit the hobby the first time, I was used to paying £4.99 - 5.99, so it's hard to adjust to current prices... -
'50s KW?
dodgefever replied to dodgefever's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks for the replies. I'd like to stick to 1/25, I have a hard enough time seeing what I'm doing without going to smaller scales. I'll think about the Illini resin conversion... it looks nice, but it's pricey. -
I stumbled upon this photo and it's got me daydreaming about trying to build it - I think it's a cool looking rig. Is there anything in resin for that old cab & hood?
-
I only use it for stripping Halfords paint & primer. If it's recent paint, it'll wipe off with IPA on a paper towel. Otherwise, it might need to soak for a day or two (in a closed container, obviously). That'll soften it, but then you still need to scrub it - it won't flake off like enamel. The Fairy stuff works much better on enamel.
