Curtis Turner SCCA 1966 Mustang
Leo64 replied to Leo64's topic in Other Racing: Road Racing, Salt Flat Racers
Thanks Jim, Curt deserves most of the credit for finishing the model up. I only did the body work, mainly scratch building the area that would show with the bumpers removed, and made up the decals. Curt does a great job at replica race cars. Steve A. -
Thanks, when I read it I guess my mind thought country. The Moyer Racing Team was from the Silver Springs, MD so the company may have been well known in the NE area only, so that may be why it is so hard to find a decent pic. At least I was finally able to find a somewhat decent pic of the car showing the decal the original poster was looking for. I found a group on Facebook that said it was for A/FX - B/FX & Fliptop Comets, and in the media section of pictures I found that pic that was actually post by Sam Auxier Jr himself. Steve A.

Rob, I did a Google search and found the following info, oddly it was on a British Car Forum website: "AEI was a high performance shop that built, raced and maintained cars built both for street and strip. It was owned by Pete Hall and he had two mechanics that were top-notch. Pete had the contract to maintain the local police cars, so it was not unusual to be working next door and hear a dragster smoking the tires down our business street ( Aaron lane ) and everyone would stop work, come out and watch. Pete was very successful himself, and was responsible for most of the fast cars around the county." I keep trying various searches to see if I can find a better image of the decal, but so far I haven't been able to find anything. Seems odd that the guy was responsible for so many fast cars around the country at the time, but finding a good image or any info is so hard to do. Steve A.

I've been helping my friend Curt Raitz with his builds of the race cars Curtis Turner raced that he has been doing for the museum back east, and while researching online for some decals for him I came across some different cars. Curt has been mostly focusing on Curtis' NASCAR cars and the other series he raced in when banned from NASCAR, I found a couple of cars I thought would be interesting to do. I previously posted a Ford Falcon he raced, and I decided to also do a 1966 Mustang he raced. I did the decals up for the car, and started the model, but because of several moves I had to do, I wasn't able to work on it, so I gave it to Curt so he could see about finishing it. He just sent me the pics of the finished model and said I could post them here. I started with the AMT '66 Mustang kit, but swapped out the chassis, suspension, and engine with a better detailed one from a different kit. I think it was a different AMT kit, but it has been awhile and I can't remember which one it was. If I remember, the Torque Thrust wheels came from a Revell John Greenwood Corvette kit and I bought Indycal tire decals. The paint was '66 Mustang Rangoon Red from Scalefinishes. As I mentioned, I designed and printed the decals for the project. Curt did a great job finishing up the model, and I hope they like it at the museum. Steve A.

Bruce, Sent you this pic on the Spotlight board, but figured I would post it here also, in case anyone else was interested. Steve A.

Scalefinishes site down or gone?
Leo64 replied to Dpate's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
There seems to be a problem if you try using www.sclefinishes.com, but I got to the website by doing a Google search and it came up with http://www.scalefinishes.com/Paint.html and you can also get to the home page by using: http://www.scalefinishes.com/welcome.html I think this was what I did last week and placed an order. Received my order in just a few days. Steve A. -
That turned out really well. It kinda reminds me of a Lambo Promod pic I came across while searching the internet. Steve A.

Nostalgic Contingency Decals?
Leo64 replied to Calb56's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I contacted my friend Dwayne on FB, and he said he does not recall anyone offering decals like you describe. I also asked him about Mark Brown like you asked and he said unfortunately Mark passed away like about 6 years ago. Sorry to have to give you that info. Anyways, I'll see what I can come up with for old Bonneville decals for you. Steve A. -
Nostalgic Contingency Decals?
Leo64 replied to Calb56's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have a friend that is one of the founders of the Straight Line Modeler group, I'll try contacting him to see if he might have an idea who it was selling the decal sheet. In my research online, I have come across some decal sheets with a bunch of equipment companies on them, but I don't know who made/or makes them as I don't see a name on them. Steve A. -
Nostalgic Contingency Decals?
Leo64 replied to Calb56's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I sent you a message about this. As far as the old decal sheet you had, I've done a lot of research online looking for different vintage decals, and I've seen a few Vintage/Nostalgia drag and NASCAR contingency decal sheets, but don't remember ever seeing one that had a bunch of Bonneville decals. It is possible that someone back then did a limited run of the sheet and they are no longer in business. There has been a bunch of aftermarket suppliers of model stuff that are no longer around, and decal sheets are tough to have last a long time. Steve A. -
Nostalgic Contingency Decals?
Leo64 replied to Calb56's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've done a few decals for myself and some friends, and I'm trying to understand what you are meaning about "Bonneville Salt Flats/Speed Week" decals. Are you looking for decals of the different year races at Bonneville, or are you looking of speed equipment companies that racers used at Bonneville? I've found a website that has a bunch of different vintage decals, and I sometimes use it when looking for samples online of different images. They have a section called "Bonneville" but other than a couple of equipment companies, it is mostly race event decals: https://nostalgicracingdecals.com/shop/index.php?rt=product/category&path=52 Most of the nostalgia Drag Contingency decal sheets that are out there have most of the speed equipment companies that the racers at Bonneville used on their cars at the time. I'm not sure of any companies that were specific to only Bonneville racing, but I'm not sure about that. Steve A. -
Kinda obvious question but I gonna ask it anyway.

I can't remember where I saw this tip, but I tried it out and it works pretty good. What I did was buy a set of not too expensive tweezers, you can find them at a bunch of different places, then I went to a local bicycle shop and they gave me a used bicycle inner tube. I used 5 minute epoxy and glued a small piece of inner tube to each of the tweezers tips and then trimmed them with a sharp x-acto or scalpel. It helps with gripping small parts. Steve A. -
1930's Chrysler Air Flow?
Leo64 replied to misterNNL's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Tom, if & when I can get my 3D printer set back up, if you haven't gotten one I can see about trying to print one for you. Can't say when I will get it setup, but when I do I'll let you know. Steve A. -
Sorry to hear that about Kenny. That's one of the bad things about Facebook, that they don't take down pages by someone after they pass away. Not too long ago I received a reminder about it being Steve Hinson's B'Day. Unfortunately Steve passed away from cancer awhile back.

For the Fall Guys GMC truck decals, Slixx Decals offers a Mini Gasser sheet with the Fall Guy decals on it: https://slixx.com/8066.htm?id=5510 Also, JBOT decals use to offer them in various sizes. I had heard he was no longer taking orders on his website due to health reasons, but you might try emailing him to see if you can still get a sheet: http://www.jbot.ca/cars/misc/fallguy.shtml I seem to remember seeing a website where someone was reproducing the MPC kit decals, but I haven't been able to find the site yet. I'll keep looking for it though. After doing a little more looking, I found the decals I was thinking of. The decals were made by Kenny Terry, and he also did a Dukes of Hazzard sheet, but he no longer has a website. It looks like he is on Facebook though, so you can see about contacting him that way. 1930's Chrysler Air Flow?

In Honor Of The Fallen
Leo64 replied to Plowboy's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
I've built a few emergency response vehicles over the years. The Dubai Police Audi R8 was built from the Revell Germany kit with Studio27 decals & aftermarket lightbar. The NOPD Crown Vic was built from a Testors metal body kit and I made up the NOPD decals. The fire truck was built from a Lindberg 1/32nd scale kit with decals I designed. It was given to the local fire department as a gift. While looking online one day I came across a pic of a Lamborghini that a couple had donated to the LAPD for use as a promotional vehicle. I thought it was neat looking, so I used a Fujimi kit and made up some LAPD decals, I decided to add an aftermarket lightbar because I thought it looked better with one on it. While on a business trip to Taiwan many years ago, I so the police used several nice cars, and liked the looks of the BMW 5 Series they used. I took a few pics of the car while at a rest area, and found a Fujimi kit to replicate it. I found the lightbar in my parts stash, and had to modify some Mercedes Benz rims from a kit to look more like the BMW ones. Since this was years before I got my Alps printer, I ended up hand drawing the graphics on the door. -

JR Salvinos kits enquiry...
Leo64 replied to oldracer's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've seen some modellers clean up the flash and seams on kits, then polish the bare plastic, especially with the larger kits. I personally like to clean the model, prime to check for scratches and sand to level, then paint. To me painting provides a more realistic finish, but sometimes doing a simple build can be fun too. You need to build for yourself and have fun doing it. Steve A. -
There is at least one person on Cults3D website that offers files of flares like that, his handle is BlackBox, but you are just buying the files. You need to have someone with a 3D printer to actually get them printed up. I've seen a few eBay sellers offering 3D prints from this persons designs, but they are not cheap, it might be close to the same as buying a kit. https://cults3d.com/en/design-collections/BlackBox/body-kits I tried checking Shapeway's marketplace to see if someone offered something like them, but didn't find anything so far. 3D Printed 1960 Maserati Birdcage Tipo 60
Leo64 replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Rafael, the current issue #215 that just came out of Model Cars Magazine has a lot of info in it about 3D printing, and one of the articles titled "3D Roundtable" is a discussion with several "trailblazers" in 3D model printing. One of them is Bill Cunningham that did the Maserati files, and at the end of the article they give the website of www.modelcarsmag.com/3dprintingresources where you can download the Maserati 3d files. It is a Zip file, so you will need to extract all the files afterwards. I hope this helps you out. Steve A. -
Question: what engine is in this kit? TIA!
Leo64 replied to Luc Janssens's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I know it is a small block Chevy engine with something like a Turbo 350 or 400 automatic transmission. I think it is commonly referred to as an LT engine. I don't remember if a specific displacement size was listed on the box or the instructions. If you do a search on eBay you can see pics of the engine on some of the boxarts. That kit was based on the Monogram '37 Ford Street Rod Fat Fender kit that was orange on the box, but I think it used a different air cleaner. Steve A. -
The problem you are going to find with the resin hood from SMH is that it is based on one of the old 1/25th scale annual kits, and while the Revell 70 Trans Am kit is listed on eBay as a 1/25th scale, it is actually the old Monogram kit that is 1/24th scale. So the resin hood will be slightly smaller, and you will either need to add material to get it to fit, or try cutting out and grafting them onto the kit hood, but then it is resin to plastic and you have the hood scoop opening to deal with. I don't know if he still has them available, but Greg Wann use to offer a resin 70 Firebird Formula body & hood, though I can't remember off the top of my head what scale it is, and what kit to use as a donor. I have one of his resin trans kit in my stash, but after a recent move I'm not sure where it is at the moment to check it. It would be nice if one of the model companies would come out with an updated version of the Formula car, I like the looks of the car myself. I know the old annual kit molds were modified over the years, so they aren't available anymore, and if you do see one of the kits up for sale, they are usually going for a pretty good price. Steve A.
