New project on the bench...61 Datsun NL320 Unibody pickup...
Jon Cole replied to BHarrison's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Yeah! How outrageous is this?!!! Be it pickup or sedan, I never knew it existed! Looking forward to this. -
Twin mast antennas
Jon Cole replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks all! Especially Charlie! I love those "way up north" comments!!! Yep, the ice finally went out of the lakes last week! BTW, I am just a quick 1/2 hour from the Mass border. In fact, I love Mass, it's my home state. In less than an hour I can "Pahk the cah" and take the T from Fitchburg to Boston! I will start looking for stainless tubing at a local medical supply, and see how that goes. Even if they have it, I know they will ask "What size?" And I am, well, metric challenged. Aw heck, I'm numbers challenged! As in "too-pid!" It was difficult to learn in school, when I had to keep an eye on who Sister Mary Left Hook was stalking next! I guess I will bring a piece of 3/32 aluminum tube, and tell them it has to fit in this, like a scale car antenna. Below is an actual staff photo from my elementary school... -
Meh. Any rich fool can drive an exotic. But only a select few get to boast that their exotic went up in flames! "EH! I wasa gonna sell it off anyhow!" Next one was alledgedly a 360 Modena! Fried exotic... the new status symbol!

I plan on building a custom that will have frenched antennas. I have the standard 1/16" and 1/32" K&S aluminum tubing (for recessed mounts), and I also have two diff size wire, a .70 and another I cannot recall the size. I need metal tubing thin enough for the lower parts of an automotive antenna. I have some hypodermic needles. Is that stainless hypo tubing available anywhere via mail order? Also I wonder if a local medical supply house could help me? Thanks!

There is something bizarre about a heat shield... catching fire! It's like the fire extinguisher bursting into flames.

Hey! This is a nice surprise! I usually cringe at the thought of looking at a show rod... but this one is sharp!

Fantastic scratch-building, John!

Charger Police Car
Jon Cole replied to Greg Cullinan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Letting this (police) issue of the Charger slip by was a big mistake! Lingberg and/or Testors (are they connected at the hip?) are in business one day, then someone says otherwise, and then someone disputes that... on and on it goes. BTW, there was a kit of the police version, but it is based on the pre-painted die-cast body kit. Because it is pre-decorated, you would need to remove the graphics to do another agency. -
HARRY! Thank you!

Brad, I think Dave is suggesting you tape it up yourself if you are not going to go to the hospital. Also, you could at least call your doc for advice... and inform them you cannot afford any treatment. Unlike your toe, it can't hurt.

Fotki is indeed back up! Thank you Danno for the info explanation as to what happened... yes, it could happen to any service. Still, I am always interested in alternatives. Can someone tell me if it is possible, as well as easy to make individual folders, or albums in either Photobucket, or Flickr? Can you explain how to do that? I'm a photo junkie, I hoard them! I need separate folders. Gracias!

I don't know for sure how many thousands of photos I have on Fotki... it may well be in the tens of thousands. I'm not going to start over now. I did a trial once of Photobucket, I could not figure out how to set up different album pages. With Fotki, I have a "download here" page, then I transfer each photo to one of my hundreds of albums.

Prius Model Kit - Preorders taken
Jon Cole replied to Hornistfuller's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
If I had a dime for each Prius I see on the road, I would be much wealthier than I am now! Ever notice we start noticing the (1:1) car you just bought? They were there all along, they just don't get noticed. Didn't have much interest in them before owning one. This may not apply to wealthy people who can actually afford to buy the cars you lust for. Maybe some don't notice cars like the Prius because they just don't care for them? I don't want one, but I would like my wife to get one... she has a 1/2 hour one way commute each day. I also don't buy into this 'disdain' that some seem to have against the car, nor any pre-conceived notions why people buy them. Yet if I did, I would say perhaps they just want to save some $$$ at the pump? I don't think that is much different than most of us. -
You made a much dissed kit look good! I mean, really good!

acrylic enamel assistance
Jon Cole replied to berr13's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Use a good quality lacquer primer. Your paint should be OK over it. The rule of thumb is- enamel paint over lacquer primer... OK. But, lacquer paint over enamel primer... big trouble! Lacquer is more chemically 'hot' than enamel is. -
If it will help, compare this 1950... To this 1951... Under the outer sheetmetal, both trucks are essentially the same. The '51 has a wider grill, it's fenders shaped for that larger opening. That would explain perhaps why they look different. I have a few pics if they help. The pics are titled alphabetically, note the model year listed... http://public.fotki.com/JCole/11_fomoco/11-ford-trucks-post-war/

How do you display your builds
Jon Cole replied to kobuzz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here is a display cabinet I found out behind our hospital. I think it was destined for the trash, a refugee from their optical department. Unfortunately, the doors on both the front and back are missing. The clear plexi goes up each side. The photo I took in my carport before we brought it inside. I use this one to display my presidential limousine collection. Most of my built models go in a curio cabinet. It has a light at the top, but not a halogen bulb; just your standard 40w. also has a mirrored back, and twin doors. It was a return to a store... has a small crack in the door wood frame from the screw, and it is hidden when the door is closed. It's a full height cabinet. I had a glass shop make more shelves for me. These things run about $500 new; I got it for $30. Not bad, eh?! -
Model... maybe.
