I had been eying up a Star Wars kit at Michaels, hoping the exhaust outlets would work since there's no scale listed on the box. Today with a 50% off coupon in hand I decided to roll the dice and see if they were the right size: Almost perfect. Now I have to clean up the headlight holes, make some beveled mounting rings for the outlets/tips, and drill the centers out. -
I think the AMT '71 Dodge Charger kit includes a dual snorkel air cleaner.

I don't think any of the 1/25 kits matched anything Boyd's company built in 1:1, did they? I think the accurate replicas were done by Testors (Alumacoupe, Chezoom, Boydster, etc.) a few years before AMT jumped in. -

There may be perfectly good reasons for Revell's perceived "lateness", and their timing couldn't be better if the '68 Firebird kits hits store shelves the last week of September-- one week before the new season of Overhaulin' premieres on TV. -
There is no one correct answer for all uni-body Chrysler cars, so we'll start with that disclaimer. In the late '60s (at least, maybe earlier) Chrysler used dip tank for its uni-bodied cars, so they should be fully primed underneath at a minimum. How much body color got on the underside varies, but generally speaking, they were never fully covered, so there should be some primer still visible or exposed. Areas such as the transmission tunnel, above the gas tank and in the "shadows" were rarely covered. If you want your model to look believable, prime it all, then imagine you are spraying a 1:1 car. You will need a single 4-bbl (or 2-bbl) intake manifold, carb and the specific air cleaner you wish to use, but otherwise the 440 engine can pass for a 383.

It won't be shipping until near the end of September, unless Hobby Lobby gets them earlier then everyone else. Based on what I've seen forum members pick up at LHSs and what I've seen appear on the shelves at HL, they get them about the same time as everyone else...check back during the last week of September.

They have made room and added divider stickers for the Revell '68 Firebird Foose Design, Polar Lights Petty Torino Talledega, and AMT '69 Hurst/Olds kits at my local store, too.

No, Revell is saying the majority of people who buy their kits want them in the $15-$30 range, and that group is their core customer base. They took a big risk with the 1/12 Shelby Mustang GT-500 kit, which was both priced and sized out of their core customers' comfort zone, so it's not like Revell never tries to appeal to the "willing to pay" crowd, but you'd be correct to say they don't do it very often. -

"Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?" Now, applied to model kit tooling and the kits they produce: Tooling time and detail costs money. How nice do you want the kit to be, and how much are you willing to pay for it? You could grind down every weld bead to perfection on every rod you work on, perfectly space every fuel and brake line clip along the full length of each car, make sure each stitch in every leather seat is uniform with all the others and so on, but you (or your customers) have to decide how perfect it needs to be, and/or how close to perfect they're willing to pay for. The interview with Revell's Ed Sexton II posted really hammered home this point, but here it is again. Revell's kits will never be perfect or a world-class standard, because the majority of their customers wouldn't pay the final retail cost of such a product. They (Revell) know the quality and price points they must hit in order to generate the sales numbers they need to be profitable, so spending two times more in development and tool engraving isn't going to result in twice the amount of sales. I think a lot of us, and bu "us" I mean adult, experienced hobbyists (versus the average Joe/Jane) care deeply about scale accuracy, and most of us seem to understand and acknowledge kit's limitations, even though we might not agree with or like those limitations. -

It's going to be their 1/25 '68 Firebird 400 kit with new wheels and tires, maybe some lowered suspension pieces, and likely the drag parts no longer included. I think this has been known/assumed since they announce this kit and the '67 Coronet as part of a new "Foose" series of kits. As far as all-new kits of customs/rods go, the upcoming Rat Roaster will be the litmus test for such kits IMHO. If it sells well, we can look forward to another "from scratch" custom/rod/street machine type kit in 2013/2014. maybe even something Chip Foose designed. -

That's kind of what I am going with, as the fairing behind the driver's head will not to very tall, and likely not as high as the top of the driver's helmet. I always liked the hoop on Marv Eldridge's Fiberglass Trends 'Vette roadster F/C, so I kind of emulated that here. I plan to position the driver so that his eyes are just over the top of the body, which will allow me to use a lower rollbar hoop like so: I used two sections from the Avanti's original C-pillars to form the hoop, then laminated a thin piece of styrene on the inside for strength. I will thin it down a bit and blend it into the fairing/hood bulge once I get closer to determining the driver's final position, as it was left too tall for now: The rear wheel arches are going to need some filler strips and sanding, as they are uneven side-to-side, and need more forward lean to be consistent with the front wheel arches. -

Exactly. Both may be accurate, and they shouldn't be the same size, as they are each a different scale. We should also note that there are two distinct 1/24 scale '70/'71 'Cuda bodies from (now) Revell- the (originally) Monogram 1/24 '71 Hemi 'Cuda and the later Revell 1/24 '70 AAR kit, which was based on Monogram's '70 Dodge Challenger T/A kit. What I find interesting is the person the O.P. has mentioned, who is in charge of making the decision to create an all-new '70 'Cuda kit doesn't seem to understand the U.S. market and how U.S. buyers and their habits are different from those in the European and Asian markets, and that's why the 1/24 vs. 1/25 scale difference matters. -

In the interview Ed Sexton did, he pretty much confirmed that- American buyers expect a kit in the $10-$30 range, and Revell bases their kits' parts count and complexity based on established sales data they have. American model car kit buyers think $45 for a kit is way too much to pay for a kit, and simply are unwilling to do so, and Revell has fine-tuned its products to the majority of its customers desires and buying patterns. -

Don't be so disappointed so soon. This kit will probably be the basis for a few spin-offs for years to come.

If you're a fan of Revell on facebook this might be old news to you, but The Plastic Scale Modeling Hour's guests this week were Ed Sexton and Roger Harney of Revell, and you can listen to what they had to say, and how they answered each question here: http://hawkeyes-squa...ling-hour-ep33/ There is some interesting info in their answers, and Mr. Sexton's honest and direct answers were very refreshing to hear, especially in regards to licensing costs, why we don't see more larger scale kits, and why we will continue to see more '69 Camaro kits. I don't know that listening to this interview will change anyone's mind with regard to their opinion of Revell, Round2, etc., but at the very least it may provide you with some new insight and understanding of why this happen the way they do. On a side note, Gregg, if you happen to read this, would an interview like this be something you would be interested in doing, representing Model Cars Magazine?

After a few rounds of sanding, priming, then repeating, the body is finally coming into shape. The former hood/cowl bulge, which will now form the fairing behind the driver's head, needs to be a bit taller, and I have to add a matching/mirror image air duct to feed the turbine engine, but those will be tended to once the final engine and driver positions are established. I took some late evening pics with poor lighting, so these'll have to do for now. I've tried to retain the stock body's hourglass shape, while still giving it a slight taper from back to front, and I'm happy with how the fender and quarter panel peaks work together (and are now symmetrical side-to-side), even though they aren't an exact match front-to-back. The slight;y mismatched front and rear wheel arches still bother me, so I think I need to "sweep back" the rear openings a bit more. -
I would wager that the second version will be a NASCAR something, especially considering the comments from the mystery insider in the '50 Olds thread.

Not that I've seen, and considering the Olds is due to ship at the end of September and we just saw the box art last week, I wouldn't expect to see it until October or so.

We know it's going to be a 2'n1 with one of those versions being stock, so if Dave Van wants to expand upon the second version, we're all ears. Paging Dave Van...Dave Van to the red courtesy phone... It is scheduled to ship on 11-29-12, so the first week of December looks like the street date.
