Another Rattlecan MPC modified in the works.
CaddyDaddy replied to Rattlecan Dan's topic in WIP: NASCAR
Dan.......what do you do to make the "turnouts" on the exhaust pipes AFTER the collectors? I've used aluminum tube, but that limits me to slash cut or a straight pipe. I've tried plastic tube, but always end up with a collapsed pipe on the inside of the bend. -

This has REALLY caught my interest! Great fab work. Might I ask what frame and body did you start with? -
1941 Willy's Gasser Wheels & Tires
CaddyDaddy replied to Zippi's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Hey Scott......you refer to the red Willy’s as being “at Englishtown”. Those photos are definitely not from Englishtown. While the license plates on the Chevelle and the Willy’s look like New Jersey plates, it’s also not Island Dragway nor Atco. I’m just asking because wherever it is, it looks like they have a very nice pits, staging lanes, and strip. Would like to visit. And yes, that red Willy’s is one clean gasser! -
Johnny Thunders interpretation of Pipeline. Absolutely manic!

Eddie Hazel in Maggot Brain, the 1971 P-Funk classic. Still get chills when I hear it live in concert.

Been really feeling the new Stones, “Angry”. Keef has often been overlooked in the pantheon of great rock guitarists, but I’ve always thought a lot of his stuff was simple and clean.

When younger, many times when I needed parts or a project, I went "junkin'", picking through junk yards, wrecking yards, scrap yards......whatever you want to call 'em. More times then I care to remember, I'd knock on some farmers door if I saw something interesting sitting out in his field. So........when did the sighting of every old abandon car become a BARN FIND? Is it just me, or do you also find that term haute and presumptuous? They are OLD ABANDON or junk cars.......be it a Hemi Cuda or a Rambler American!

Question/New Topic for us Oldtimers
CaddyDaddy replied to TransAmMike's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
66 years old.......mentally mid 20’s.....LOL!!! Heart attack 15 years ago, couple of stents. More recently, heart valve. Due for a new shoulder and knee. Been getting shots to prolong the inevitable. Still pretty active. Lots of yard/farm work. Matter of fact, shoveled/threw about 5 yards of mulch today. Still help a kid out with his Modified at the Saturday night track. Get in a few two hour bench sessions each week. -
Can't remember if it was this car or one of his Pontiacs. At Daytona, NASCAR was suspicious of why Smokey was getting better gas mileage than everyone else. They impounded the car and pulled the fuel cell. It pumped to the stipulated 22 gallon maximum. With the cell laying on the ground next to the car, Smokey got in, fired it up, and proceeded to drive it to his garage a couple of miles from the track. Lesson learned? In the rulebook, NASCAR limited the size of the tank, but they made not one mention on the length and diameter of the fuel line!!! Smokey had 1" diameter hose snaked all through the underside of the car, thus giving him a few extra gallons of capacity!

When I was a real little kid, our neighbor had a '59 Buick. Whenever he parked it in the street, I refused to go out and play!

Hey, Charles!! Chas here......not too far away from you in NJ. From time to time, Mike's Decals sells complete AMT NASCAR kits, less bodies, for something like $10. They come in a clear plastic bag. I bought about a half dozen to do exactly what you've done here. Couple of questions on the build: I've never tried to make a fender/quarter opening smaller. I think someone mentioned using .030 sheet and layering it. Is it added to the backside and then bondo built up? Added to the front side and seam sanded flush? Also, what pan did you use with the AMT motor to convert from dry sump to wet sump?

Pontiac Lemans French Connection

I’d take the Frenchman’s Mark if given the choice! -
If I was a betting man (and I am) I would say they were still racing with dual rear shocks in 1986. Why? The use of table top shock dyno’s didn’t come about until the early 1990’s. Prior to that, I’m thinking that shock selection was made “by the seat of the pants” method or referring to set-up books (what worked prior and what didn’t). Furthermore, shock dyno’s corresponded with the development of “rebuildable” shocks where hold-down and rebound rates could be adjusted and changed out as warranted.

You think you got problems! Currently, I’ve got three 1:1 car projects going on and two 1:1 bikes in various stages. Thank God I got a) the room b) no neighbors, and c) an understanding Mrs.

To prime, or not to prime, that is the question
CaddyDaddy replied to Kaenned's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'm not gonna comment on paint adhesion, etc....There's way better "chemists" on this board then I am. I will say that I prime every body I paint. Why? I'm a stickler for getting out any imperfection in the "sheet metal". I sand and spot putty, thinking I have everything up to snuff. I shoot a coat of gray primer, and magically, I can see everything I missed or boogered up. Would hate to take the time to lay on a nice paint job and then find these nicks, swirls or high and low spots. -

Hey there Monty!!!!!.......WOW!!! Appears that a good number of members are interested in your Harley Parts search. 446 views of the posting to date! And yet, I still haven’t seen the list of Harley dealers or bike shops that you experienced who can’t get Evo parts. I continue to want to help these fella’s out. Just need the names and locations of the ones you referenced. That is, unless you were funning us from the get go, right? In any case, keep the shiny side up! -

Ace......might I add one more catalog house: Custom Chrome Inc. While I have no experience whatsoever with Kawi frames or Norton sheet metal, I’ve got enough experience to probably get myself in trouble if we talk various Harley engines. In the back corner of my shop is a 1977 XLCR, Harley’s factory Cafe Racer that they made for two years. Unfortunately, a few years back, while negotiating a wide right hand sweeper, I had an “off road” excursion with it. I’ve been able to collect all original Harley parts to repair it, just haven’t gotten around to doing so. if I may be so bold, I’d like to make a recommendation for an engine choice with your proposed project. Stay with a 1200cc Evo Sportster motor. An old Ironhead Shovel would no doubt be cheaper, but they can’t hold a candle to the Evo. With the Evo you get an extra gear (5 speed vs 4), much lighter weight (aluminum barrels and heads vs cast iron), electronic ignition, better oiling, and a much larger selection of aftermarket parts, amount other things. One final point. Sitting over top of that Shovelhead is like wrapping your legs around a hot pot belly stove! Believe me, it makes for a looooong day riding. If you’re as adept with a wrench as I believe you are, these things are like tinker toys. Nothing to ‘em! -

Monte....sorry to learn that with your brother, “life threw him a curve” recently. Must have really laid him low to negate spending a few minutes putting together a “service parts” list. I have seen it happen before however. Must admit that I’m a bit intrigued that you were looking for an “alternative source(s) of parts”. Would you please be so kind as to put me in touch with the “Harley shops that are having to resort to cannibalizing parts”? Also, you mentioned local bikes shops that cannot find “service parts for bikes from the 80’s to early 90’s”. I’d appreciate talking to them too. Since it doesn’t look like I’ll be working with you or your brother for whatever reason, seems that my altruistic self would be of great aid to these struggling businesses. -

What’s up there buddy! Riding season is well upon us. Times a’wastin’! How about that list of “service parts”? Let’s try to get at least ONE of those FOUR Harley’s on the road. -
Sorry to hear of this! Definitely, go get yourself checked out. I realized that once in my 60's, I started to lose my balance more often. Haven't gone down yet, but I feel it's only a matter of time. That's why I now carry my phone with me 24/7. Living out here in the woods, it could be a long time before someone was to find me! Ahhhh..........but we need to lighten up the moment a little. Was just remembering doing those drills in college football.......where you would quickly "high step" through the two long rows of tires. Imagine getting a bunch of us ol' timers to try that today!!!
