  1. Use white automotive pinstriping tape, the kind body shops use. Stick some to a clean piece of glass. File the groove in an X-Acto knife to hold 2 blades (or simply clamp 2 blades together with a small pair of vice grips). Using a straightedge, cut out your pinstripe with your homemade "stripe cutter", and apply just like a real car. It's not too thick and it WILL stay put. That's what its made for.
  2. Thanks, guys! It ain't perfect for sure, but it was fun to build a model in 24 hours. I've been a truck driver for the best part of 37 years, so going without sleep ain't really nothing new. I did get pretty drowsy around the 2:30 AM area, but a couple hours nap fixed it! By the way, I don't know why I titled this the '86 Monte Carlo....it's actually the '87 version....Tim's last ride. Thank goodness most of those contengencies were grouped together! If I had to apply them one by one, I'd probably still be decaling! French Vanilla. That's my favorite flavor ice cream, lol. And yes, you right about Tim...he would've been one of the greatest.
  3. Looking awesome so far! http://www.canepacollection.com/detail-1987-chevrolet-monte_carlo-nascar-used-8152526.html
  4. Thanks, everyone! This was the first model I've built in 24 hours since I was a kid....did it all the time back then, why is it so much harder now? Lol! But it was fun. I'm already looking forward to next years build.
  5. With a few minutes to spare, I'm calling it done! There's a few issues with it, but I'll take it for a 24 hour build. Already looking forward to next year!
  6. Thank you, its more work than I thought it would be! Working on decals, got 1 hour to go!
  7. 9 AM.....ready for decals......
  8. Ha ha! Yep, you're right! I got it wrong, thats what trying to hurry will do! Won't have time to tear it apart to fix it, so I guess it'll be our lil' secret!
  9. Thanks everyone! Well, been rolling right along. It's now 2:30, and this is the last update till morning. Got the tires/wheels ready... These kits have a double shock setup, but by the 80s everyone was running single shocks. Simply cut one away.... Another thing I like to do is cut away the window net, then glue it to the inside of the roll cage, like it's hanging down. I've never seen a real race car with no one in it and the net up..... Heres where I'm currently at...... Im headed for the sack for a little nap, then start decals in the morning. Thanks for looking!
  10. 10:45.....engine is close, just need a few more details. The kit headers aren't right, so I scrounged up some from the parts box. I think they're from a recent Nascar kit. Used one of my short track seats. Made up some belts from masking tape.... Time for a short break and a bowl of ice cream, lol...
  11. 6:45.....most parts are painted, getting ready for assembly..... Body painted......
  12. Oh, I normally take a long time! This 24 hour build is harder than I thought, time just flies by! I'm hoping I can finish!
  13. 4 PM....Body in primer, removed headrest from roll cage, since I'm using a high back racing seat. Getting cage together for paint. Looks like Testors Flame Red lacquer is going to be close.
  14. First hour.....working on the body, filling in all the door lines thats not supposed to be there. I also drilled out the fuel filler and overflow to be replaced with ones made from aluminum....
  15. This is what I chose for the 7th annual 24 Hour Build starting today. I don't build too many Nascars, I much prefer short trackers, but I had this in the stash and I had a set of Powerslide decals, so why not? To me, this era of Nascar was the best looking cars. They still looked like their factory counterparts, but looked like a racecar too. Had Tim lived, he would probably have 7 or 8 Championships by now. I won't be doing any plumbing or wiring, but I will be making a few corrections to the basic kit...IF I get finished at all, lol. Waiting for the start in 21 minutes.....well, 20 now........hope to be back in a couple hours with updates!
  16. Those look great!
  17. Yes, that IS nice! Did the body just drop down on there, or did you have to make it fit?
  18. Here is a pic of the actual car, and as you can see, the inside of the body was blue: Here are a few more detail shots of this car:
  19. I agree. Looking great so far.
  20. The first one would be fairly straightforward using a modified MCW '81 Lemans body. Quite different from a Grand Prix, but good luck nonetheless.
  21. I think you're right, it looks like a 80s Cutlass Calais with a Camaro nose. Good luck with your project, I'll be looking forward to seeing it.
  22. As far as the Petty car, the pictures you see here are all I have in Petty Colors, but I have several when it was Lindley's car....here's a couple: And a great picture of the two Kings....Richard Petty and the king of short tracks, Butch Lindley... Now I DO have a picture of another obscure Petty sportsman car that he raced in the mid 80s, but because it has Budwieser lettering it leads me to believe that Petty didn't actually ownn it, just maybe drove it in a few events...
  23. Thanks so much, guys, I do believe thats it. Blowing the picture up it does indeed look like "Hogan For Governor". Now all I have to do is "backdate" an MCW '81 Lemans body to an '80. By the way, the car itself is an ex-Butch Lindley car and was built by Mike Laughlin. I'm not sure of the reasons why the Pettys bought it, maybe they needed a sportsman car right away or something. They were not as successful as Lindley was with it though, lol. That is the late Buck Simmons, from Baldwin GA., probably the best late model dirt track driver in history. He won 1026 races, the first in 1961 at age 14, and the last in 2009. Buck passed away last year, and that particular car...the one he got his 1000th win in...was restored and put in the Georgia Auto Racing Hall Of Fame, in Dawsonville GA. He was one of my racing heros.
  24. Ok, thanks!!That would be a huge help.
  25. This is from a Monte Carlo of that vintage, but they were all very similar.
